Scope for Farquhson Rifle
      #110326 - 24/07/08 10:41 AM

I have a Rigby Farquhson rifle in caliber .400/.350NE she is complete with factory fitted one inch scope rings, serial numbered to the rifle. I need a scope for her, any suggestions for a sourcing an appropriate scope would be greatly appreciated. The difficulty I have run into is that the scope needs to be long and also have a good eye relief due to where the scope bases are mounted, I would also like a scope that is in keeping with the style of his rifle. Reticle should be a simple picket post or cross wire. I have an old Pecar that is long (by today’s standard) but even she will not work unless I lean my head forward in an awkward position.

Thanks John

While not peroid I wonder if an old 3x power Leupold would be long enough to fit. It would certainly have the eye relief your looking for. I don't have an old Leupold on hand I'm sure someone on here can tell you. Ray Atkinson probably is the man to ask. I think he has a few of these on his rifles.

Try Dixie Gun Works.

How about a 4x Khales of early vintage?

May not quite be period but an excellent scope none the less eye relief is fairly good and the reticle fits your requests too.

Thanks for the advice, the Zeiss Conquest is better but still not good. Custom rings may be the only answer, then I could use the Swavorski Z6 1-6 x 24 EE. I am in no panic, the search goes on. She would make a great rifle for Moose and Kudu

Thanks John

You could have the front offset ring extended further very easily by putting in a piece and rebluing it. Would not change anything but would allow the scope to be positioned further back and utilize many more scopes. Be a lot easier than new custom rings to fit the Rigby bases. A flat piece Tig welded in would not even be noticable as it is already an offset ring.

Hi John.
Sent you an email. I just picked up something from England that might interest you.

John

I have seen a Zeiss straight tubed objective scope that was very long that might work.

I do not know exactly which model it is.

Also the eyerelief of the Trijicon straight tube scope seemed "longer" than other scopes.

First let me complement you on a beautiful rifle. I have a Farquharson, but not one in such beautiful shape.

Secondly, let me make a suggestion. If you don't object to sleeving your rings down to 22mm, a Lyman Alaskan would be an ideal companion for this rifle. The Alaskan is 10.5" long, weighs only 11 ounces, and has 3-5" eye relief. I have used one for years on my .458 and on my .450 Watts with no problem at all. They are vintage scopes, in the same class as the famous Zeiss and Hensholdt Zielklein scopes, but with the added advantage of "weatherproof" windage and elevation adjustments, whereas the German scopes had only elevation and were not sealed against moisture. The optics are by Bausch & Lomb.

Alaskans come up regularly on eBay, and if you can't find one, I could probably help you out. I prefer the tapered post and crosshair reticle, but they also come with crosshair, or straight post, if you prefer.

John:
You sure that's a Farquharson?
Looks like a Webley action to me, 1902-patent perhaps?
(I'm away from my library at the moment).

Lovely rifle though, which-ever..!

John, I would be tempted to see whether a rail mouted scope like the Zeiss or Swarovski on appropriate mounts wouldn't give you the flexibility you are seeking.

Hi all

Thanks for all the input. I will go with that super vintage scope offered above; it seems too good to be true not to put them together. Can anyone confirm if one of screws in the top of the main tube is for windage adjustment?

I am no expert on these old English single shot rifles. Is it not correct to call her a Farquharson?
Yes the action is clearly marked Webley 1902 Patent on the RHS and Rigby & Co on the LHS.

Research by the previous owner shows she was delivered on Nov 4th 1903 to Lt Col VM Stockley.

John
