Chamber Reamer Lists
      #174867 - 05/02/11 06:51 AM

I've had an idea (for better or worse!) to begin a post where anyone can post a list of chambering reamers either they or their gunsmith has. The reasoning behind this is that quite often during conversations at ranges etc, the topic of discussion often come round to "Do you know who's got a reamer for cartridge XYZ" I though that if gunsmiths anywhere, not just Australia, want to post a list of the reamers they have, for potential customers to peruse, then it might save some of the work in looking for a reamer, or having to buy one for a single job. Obviously a lot of gunsmiths can cut various chambers using a combination of reamers, or by using neck and throat reamers, but at least it might be a starting point, and then you can call your favourite gunsmith and ask him about it. Some gunsmiths in Australia might even loan at a small cost, reamers to other qualified gunsmiths. Not saying this happens regularly, but it's worth the question.
Anyway, see what you all think, good idea or bad idea?
I'll start anyway with the reamer list of the gunsmith I use in Toowoomba Queensland. Jim Kent of Buffalo Gunsmithing.

Hi 450 Ackley,

I for one think it is a good idea, and your right, even your own gunsmith may not have the desired reamer in stock and then has to spend time sourcing one and guess who will be billed for his time??.

This way you would have an immediate answer if he doesn't.

Good Idea,

Cheers,

Jeff Gray

Lists are great but are rarely up to date.

Its why it's often best to post on a few forums.

Its a good idea.
Just needs a bit of effort from other reamer owners.

Generally - as least in the 'good old days' the client and gunsmith 'shared' the cost of the reamer, then the gunsmight 'kept' it as his own.

There used to be a reamer 'renter' in the states, which used 'Pacific" reamers.

I prefer to buy my own chambering reamers form Dave Kiff at Pacific Tool and Gauge and thus, be able to keep them myself after the job.

This has paid off on 8 barrels/guns for me & my friends, chambering them up in later years due to owning the reamers myself.

Are there other forums, and are they worth posting on?

My gunsmith buys the reamer at his cost, he has bought the last two calibres of mine to add to his collection and as he said to me "what can you do with half a reamer" if we go halves?

My gunsmith is the same, if he thinks he might use the reamer again at some stage, he will happily buy it.
He only tries to beg, borrow or steal a reamer if he thinks it will be a one-off job.

SC is very difficult to get hold of by all accounts, and extremely busy. Col is a good one, but is also getting busier (visiting today to pick up my 444Marlin and hand over a Lee Speed) with work as are all people servicing the firearms industry. Another few with extensive reamer lists (but no electronic copy that I'm aware of) are Keith Bridgeman at Sprinter Arms and also Robert Tobler.

Common reamers are a dime a dozen, its finding the odd-balls that is tougher. I searched 2 years for a 10.75x68 reamer before discovering one in NSW, then I found out TSE has one as well. For the Nitro Express chamberings, Bob deVries and Alex Beer are worth a try, Vic Pederson in the NT is also worth trying.

Personally, I own 'shares' in a 458AccRel reamer, 416Ruger reamer, 358CRG (35/300RCM) reamer and have access soon (hopefully) to a 458WSSM reamer and dies which some mates are doing on WSSM actions.
Cheers...

I've got this one from TSE, it's dated 2008, so will be out of date, but it's a starting point, which is all we need.

I think the .458-2" was made to fit in the Marlin Lever guns for Alaskan use.
There's a bit of history on it in Barnes Cartridges of the World.

Well chaps I have a very short list of one:-

PTG 280 Rem AI finishing reamer. Also have .280 Rem go & No-Go gauges here in the UK.

The reamer has re-cut one chamber from 7x64 to 280 AI.
