On Whiskey and Bourbon...
      #3560 - 03/07/03 06:46 PM

My usual single malt scotches include Glenlivet, Cardhu, Glenfiddich 18 year, but when I went to the local liquor store for a Cardhu, they were out but recommended that I try a single malt called, Laphroaig.

It is very different from the norm, very strong smoky aroma, with a very strong heather and peat taste. At the end you are greeted by a very smooth oak and a burst of fireworks that goes straight to the top of your head. Very unique. It is only aged 10 years, and almost tastes a bit immature, I think it would be even better after 12, 18 , or 25 years.

Last year, when demolishing an old house I found a bottle of Glenlivet that was old enough not to have a bar code on the label. It was out of this world, very different from the current batch of Glenlivet, very smooth and flavoursome, unlike anything I have ever tasted before in a single malt. I wish it would have lasted longer.

As for bourbon, I am stuck on Wild Turkey and Makers Mark, tried other labels, but they do not catch my fancy.

An Irish friend introduced me to Tullamore Dew, a blended Irish Whiskey. Quite nice.

I am sitting here at the moment, listening to Boots Randolph pouring his heart out through the sax, and sipping a glass of Scotch, wishing for a warm fire and a good book.

Lynn

Boys,

Get yourself a bottle of Booker Noe Bourbon, single barrel,
barrel proofed, unfiltered, unblended. Not as choosy about my Irish Whiskey as long as it's John Jamieson. Enjoy!

Gryph,

I would love to have a copy of that tape you have of bugling elk. It is quite a haunting sound and once you hear it in the wild, it stays with you forever. We had a herd of Elk in Northern PA and I used to go up there and listen to the elk bugle in fall. I am going for a drink, to get rid of this homesick feeling.

Joe,

I will try to find some Booker Noe Bourbon, might be a bit exotic for Australia, the land of the grape.

Lynn

I'm afraid whiskey and bourbon have never been to my taste. Can't say I have tried a lot of bourbons.

Have tried several Scotch whiskeys including Laphroaig which a business associate raves about. Even have a couple of bottles. But it tastes a little of petroleum to me

My preferred drinks are brandys and rums. Plus drinks like Anice.

Remy Martin and Courvoisier Cognacs. And another I like is an unusual Italian brandy, Vecchia Romagna.

Tawny Ports are also nice.

Remy Martin Louis XIII Cognac In Baccarat Decanter
(750 ML) $1,385.19
Made only with the highest quality grapes from the cognac region incomparible in its mellowness, bouquet and taste. A blending of cognacs aged over 70 years.

Err these are US dollars too--i have seen this cognac here in Adelaide 6-7 years ago for the then price of 1500 Oz $$$ but of course its way too high for me,would love a swig of it anyway--anybody got some.

Miller,

I think you got a good deal on that bottle. My last was $84.00US. We have heavy duty taxes on alcohol here in AK.
If it's not good, no need to look for me, I'll gladly tell you where I am. Just bring the Booker Noe when you come and I'll happily tell you what may be wrong with it, well, I mean, just as soon as I can take a good slug. While you're here, I'm sure we'll be able to find something you'll like. I'll be leaving in a week for my annual camp stint in the Brooks Range. Be back around the first of Sept. Give Booker a pat on the back for me.

Well, of all the friendly spirits out there, I like a nice well aged single malt scotch. By far and away the best I've tried is 30 yr old Glen Garioce. Never really cared for Glenlivet or MaCallans. Dinwiddie is okay. The Garioce stuff is head and shoulders above all else, in my opinion. Perfect after a long day of scrambling in the mountains after Dall Sheep. Just chip of a piece of 10,000 year old glacier ice and pour. Pure grace.
