Day pack for travel & hunting

I'm looking for a day pack as well and would appreciate pointers to what is available, brands etc.

Will be used as a airline cabin bag, a day bag when travelling, and also as a day bag on hunts. A bit of a compromise bag.

I am pretty specific on what I am looking for.

Needs to be:

- airline cabin bag suitable ie size ( ie linear inches 41 to 45 inches - lenght+height+width added togather)

- waterproof

- good quality zips - YKK

- strong fabric and good strong design

- good colours - no bright reds, blue, pink or yellow - camo or dark green is OK. I would like a decent camo or good flat green. In some places camo might not be a good idea and attract attention.

- top zip closing - I don't like drawstring closure as sometimes people "riffle" though cabin bags when no one is looking - also if it needs to be checked in, needs to be able to be locked. Possibly would still have a flat which folds over.

- zips should be able to be padlocked

- good shoulder straps, not the flimsy little ones some touristy packs have

- waist belt.

- camelbak suitab;e - at least 3 litres capacity pocket

- needs to be quite roomy inside to fit a digital SLR camera, a telephoto lens, a largish prof video camera - Canon XM2, other assorted stuff, binoculars etc. Pushing it by then.

- strong to carry weight.

- prefer it to have some outside pockets.


I have a few backpacks, one I have used for tourist trips has been repaired more than once and the rips on the repairs means it is finished. A Lowepro one is too specialised for some use.

Looked at a number of websites. Would prefer to look at real packs but difficult when all the local shops stock pink and yellow girly weak constructed crap ...

Looked at:
- Redoxx - crap shoulder straps - probably not waterproof
- Badlands - either too big or too small and have drawstring tops
- Ebelerstock - weird designs which always have fold out sides, also drawstring closure at top.
- Black wold - tourist crap
- Karrimor - still have a mid sized backpack of theirs from 1982 and it is good green hunting pack - used it a lot - now it is all yellow tourist crap
- Kifaru.

Found the Kifaru Spike Camp which is airline cabin suitable in size though looking right at the maximum. Zip top with a covering flap. Well made etc. Available in camo and even flat green.

Trouble is it looks just a bit big for casual travel day use. And looks like it might get questioned as carry on luggage. Also only one big long inside compartment (plus camelbak slot). Not sure.

I will add some more got to run.

But would appreciate comments on what you guys use and what you recommend and why.

Kifaru Spike Camp Legacy




Looks a great size for day pack hunting, but too big for museums, restaurants and the like! Also will get questioned as a carry on cabin bag I think. Some planes it will not fit in the overhead lockers or under the seats.

G'day John,
my wife and I returned a few weeks ago from a backpacking trip through Italy, Austria, Germany, France and England( in that order ) Our main packs were approx. 65 litre capacity supplemented with the small pack that can be clipped on the front. These small packs are what we used for day trips. They proved to be about as big a day pack as I'd like to use when travelling. We could carry enough to get through the day, just, but didn't slow us down. When in the thick of Tourist Ville, even these small packs become a hand full. Though as a pack to use for hunting, next to useless. From my recent experience, this is one area where certain equipment won't serve two purposes. A good hunting pack will be a poor travelling pack and vice versa. Should add I suppose that we are both 49 and other than having our first 3 nights booked, the rest of the 5 weeks were taken as they came.

That's a big pack!

The side-on photo shows the guy with a straight back but this will not be the case - he should be hunched (bodies natural response to counter the weight in that position). Heavy packs actually need to sit much higher to keep the back straight and reduce strain/fatigue.

Hello John

I picked up a SITKA Bivy 32 last year..and really really like it..it has lots of little storage compartments..for spotting scope..had a sep. compartment for a camelback water storage and plenty of room for extra's...plus the harness system works really well and is very comfortable...used it last year during all of the hunting season..as well as day hikes now this time of year..

have a cover for it I keep in the top pouch for a rain protector..works well enough my gear has never gotten wet...

The Sitka Flash 20 may be of good size too compared to the 32.

Having a look at the Kifaru Marauder too, but again it is quite big for a daypack and the purposes I want to use it for.




I like this, perhaps for more dedicated hunting purposes as pouches can be attached inside and out for gear. For example camera gear could be attached inside and other gear in pouches keeping it all accessible and tidy. This pack is listed in their military specs lists.

John this pack looks similar to some in the Platatac range. Yes they are more military based but good packs and great service. http://www.platatac.com/

Greenshoots, I have a karrimor almost identical to that, have had it 5 years and it is great, the only thing I would say is it is not lockable but since it is EASILY within air hand luggage size that is not a problem. Unless I an carrying firearms I don´t bother with hold luggage anymore. I can get enough kit in it for a trip anywhere for up to a week, longer and I´ll just buy some polo shirts when I arrive where I´m going. best

I use a "Huntec" daypack.
It is heavy canvas with that pollar fleece stuff over it.
Very quiet.

I have a Hydrostorm 3 day assault pack in OD that has been OS 8 times and inumberable aussie trips both as carry on and day pack. Has provision for bladder. Been a good thing

These back packs look just the thing. Had a good look at the site and the USA maker's site a couple of times and will certainly be sending off a fax and a phone call to see if the Sydney stockists has any.

Had a good look at most of the suggestions plus my own research. Had some trouble finding something big enough but also not too big, for its dual compromise usage planned. Seeing the purchase in the 'flesh' will also tell, plus using it. But the Blackhawk 3 day assault back pack looks like it is spot on, and also should be rugged enough for both hunting and travelling. Also has some good reviews on the net from people using it for budget travelling, touristy type trips too. Now if I could just pack like them to need no more than a carry on back pack and no checked in luggage ... ha ha not likely for me.

Take a look at "Bison Gear Packs" I've had one for about 12-15 years and traveled all over the world with it and hunt with it every year. They are made of 100% virgin wool and will last forever. They make several different models and are extremely versitle as well as being comfortable. They are made here in Montana, I doubt you will find them downunder but I know Ang will ship to you.

got my pack out last night and measured it...
about 23 high and 13 wide...in inches

I really like this pack the best of any I have tried..ti stays soft and pliable during cold weather..is incredibly well built and handy..lots of compartments, etc...have used many over the years..at this point I like this one the best...

also --btw--i had a cross strap come off of the pack-took it into the company--thehy called me on Wednesday..to come and get my pack--when I stopped in they gave me an entirely new $300 pack..impressive..

If you have access to them, you might check out Camelbak's hydration + cargo military line. Very well made, some good thought went into the organization of internal & external pockets, and they are somewhat "modular". Can't remember what model I ended up with, but the large, padded hipbelt and aluminum-reinforced framesheet are both removable to get a lighter weight platform when you're not packed heavy.

EDITED TO ADD: Just figured out the model I have is the original "Motherlode" made of 1000D Cordura (~2,100 cu in). I've used this pack in all the functions you're describing- carry-on, hunting, and knockabout day pack and it's done a good job of being big when I need it and small/manageable when I don't. The only complaint Camelbak got was the weight, so they redesigned it with 500D but also changed some of the organization (for the worse in my opinion). So I can't comment with experience on currently available designs, but I can vouch that their tactical line is extremely well made and a good value.

I purchased two Motherlodes from a fellow off Ebay, brand new for US $102.00 each.....the only downside is that they are a desert cam, not really a problem but I do resent looking like a secret squirrel when hunting with my Daughter.

Good packs though.
