CommandCar-

That 8-bore pinfire rifle is pretty cool.
I was happy to see someone from 'the gang' got it when it came around at auction.
I'd like to shoot it some day, will do if I get the chance.

Cheers

Bringing this interesting thread up again.

I many of you know I have a Rigby Shot & Ball gun which seems to have sqeezebore or chokebored barrels where the barrelwalls seems to have 3 "grooves". The barrel dia starts out with aprox. .743" and ends up in .735. I have tried with Blue dot powder and a .735" roundball. That combination could make anyone make a run after the balls as they came out of the barrels. Some actually landed down on my feet more or less..:LOL

I have a .750" roundball mold actually. Would it be safe to fire softlead balls of that caliber in such a gun taking I use FFg Blackpowder perhaps?. I have thought of ordering a .744" RB mold but just wondered if it were safe enough to fire soft .750" RB in my gun.

I think you are on the right track. I'd try Unique and/or Blue Dot though. The round balls weigh a bit less, but Unique loads for the slightly heavier Fosbery Slugs are well published. A good place to start. Some lube would be good, might have to add some tin to keep the leading down too? If you have a .750 mould and a .743 groove diameter, why not make (have made) a simple sizer or two?

What are you using for a gas seal? Sherman Bell uses a nitro card with thick cork. We can't even get the thick cork here, but I think you could order directly from http://www.siarm.com/index.php

1/4" cork is about all the hardware stored here have - might even have it at Home Depot. The Home Building Supply stores and Home Hardware stores have it. I suspect they are all related.

I'd think that with the Card with a small amount of shot-buffer to cup the ball above the wad, would give a very good seal. The cork might or might not be needed. The 'buffer' would keep the wad from pushing up alongside the ball which would make it lose it's sealing qualities.

A ring of lube between the case and the top curve of the ball would serve, I'd imagine.

The push-through 'sizer' would be an easy remedy for the .750" ball.

Thanks CC.

My feltwads were polystyrene cut out from appleboxes, nitro wads were milkcartons + undersized balls = a reciepe for a real huff but no puff load..:LOL

Thanks for the link. I believe I will start out right this time. I must order a Jeff Tanner mold in .742/.743 and let the barrel choke the ball down to .735". as it being pushed toward the muzzle.

It appears that some of these guns are an enigma to make ém work. I will also try what Tinker advised, to wrap the .735"ball like a frontstuffer ball. I have determined that this gun must get to work, because it had been working before(I am sure of).
I will keep this thread alive as I get to evolve with loads for this gun.
