I have not miked the barrel. It is swamped and you can not see the bend, but it is there. You are right I will get it. I have most of the pieces for the bending jog sitting here. A couple more to pick up over the Winter and this Spring I will get it shooting where I want it. I love this gun and am determined to take a nice Whitetail with. The wood is very sound. I have built a new bridle for it and still have a sear spring and a few screws to make, but it is coming together. I'm still a bit surprised how well it grouped.

Bouldersmith - HA! just noticed the date- it's Chrismas Day in Australia.

Merry Christmas guys 'n Gals.

That charge of Swiss is a heavy one for sure - close to equivalent to 5 drams in GOEX powder, veloicty wise, but still have a bit of leeway. I'm glad it shoots well.

Good luck with the barrels staightening. Careful work leads to good results.

Man- that's a lovely rifle!

So five years later I have finally made some progress. Went to the range with my new front sight and barrel bending jig after settling on 4 drams of Swiss and a patched 16bore ball. First time I have shot it from a bench. In times past I went to the forest but we have shooting ban in place currently due to the dry conditions. I certainly shoots to the right but not a bad as I remembered.

bending jig

Front sight is bench made, gold bead by Charles Lee.

target used to verify windage, all the shots 3-5 inches to the right were shot before any barrel bending. It did not take much, .025" bend in the middle to bring things right into line.

final shot on a clean target to verify my work

My shoulder was very sore at this point. Nice shooter while standing....kinda sucks from the bench.

and with some new screws, a stock refinish and repair, new bridle, fly and sear spring it only requires barrel browning now.

Lovely rifle!
"Kinda sucks from the bench" may be a bit of an understatement.

I am in absolute awe of that barrel-straightening jig! In the past I've inserted a barrel between the forks of a tree, or between a pickup cab and box, in order to straighten it. That jig looks like it would take much of the trial-and-error out of the process. I like it!

YES- that is quite a tool. Two Aspen trees close together works, but it's rather a lot of guesswork and perhaps luck.
