Hello Folks,

I’m the proud owner of this rifle. Steve builds a beautiful gun, but it’s more than that. Not only is it more pretty than the pictures, it shoots sub two-inch groups at 100 yards! Today I only had time to shoot one three-shot group, and it measured 1.66 inch. Pretty is as pretty does, and this one does what I ask of it. With the huge dollop of powder Steve recommended (by way of providing a fixed powder measure that throws 150 gr of FFg), I expect those 430 gr wheelweight balls will punch through anything I shoot.

The recoil is not unpleasant; that wide steel butt plate spreads it out comfortably. There’s no getting around recoil though. Even though it’s not at all painful, I still get a little sore later in the day. But, that’s the price for punching those satisfyingly large holes.

I own a lot of muzzleloading rifles, and I never expected one to shoot as accurately as this one. It’s a winner!

What fabulous work on these guns. I so admire this type of gun / rifle and the quality and craftsmanship that goes into it. What a pleasure to hunt with these.

Tom, shoot the bag off that rifle4 as I did my .69 of similar design, and learn it well. What a great friend it is, to have a large bore muzzleloading rifle with you when hunting.

I've requested a 'small bore', a .62 caliber flint sporting rifle.
I'll be keeping myself occupied for the coming months seeing the other projects roll in across Steve's bench.

And - like Steve said, When are you coming out West!?

Thanks for giving the M77 its due respect! I have a half a dozen in various calibers. Outside of putting a couple of triggers in, none have ever been to a gunsmaith for anything. My oldest one is almost thirty years old. They are super tough and totally reliable.

I think highly of the Ruger M-77. It' not as refined as some more expensive rifles, but for what you pay, it's a marvel of modern gunmaking.
I am a die-hard Mauser fan, but that's just my taste. I have nothing bad to say about Rugers as a rule. A few need a few "magic touches" now and then by a good gunsmith, but still overall, they are wonderful tools.
Truth be told, (and I will be accused of blasphemy for this) I like the Ruger #1 better than most of the old classic single shot breach loading rifles. Those that command such big money. I like them too, but if I were to choose one to live with, and use for the rest of my life, it would be a #1, hands down.
In single action revolvers again I prefer a Ruger to a Colt. Colts are fitted better from the factory and finished better, but they don't hold up like a Ruger. I am a pretty good gunsmith, and I can tune and finish up a Ruger Blackhawk so it's as nicely done as a Colt.
Now DA revolvers, I like old S&Ws the best. Colts and Rugers are nice too, and I have owned them and shot them a lot, but my hand just seems to fit the S&W best.
I build some very nice muzzleloaders, and I love high end guns of many kinds, but I have never been snobby about them. I like what I like, and price doesn't enter into the equation much.
Some, like fine doubles, are a pure joy to me, but price keeps me from owning one. Others like Rugers are quite inexpensive, but I prefer them over the more expensive guns for a number of reasons.

Again, just my particular bents.

Hello Mike

I look at the work list, and I have 5 pistols and 3 rifles in front of yours. (Pistols don't take as long as rifles) One pistol and one rifle are almost done now, and another rifle is about 75% finished. So, if I don't have any further problems that pull me away from my bench I would have to guess your gun will be started in the winter.

We are getting closer every day.

Hey.......on another note, I heard that Germany is going to stop accepting Euros from Spain. It that true, and if so, what's that all about?

It is nonsense Steve, if they did that the whole Euro would fall apart, same rumour about Italy 2 years ago. What IS true is that the Spanish and Portugese banks are taking money off the ECB like there is no tommorow...pack of cards.....be long swiss francs best, Mike

Dayrl,

I'm doing exactly as you suggested! However, with the recoil, I don't shoot very many at a time. Today I had to walk downrange to inspect my 100-yard target. Through the spotting scope I couldn't tell if I missed or enlarged the first hole (I didn't miss!). This hunting season will be a real pleasure.
