750,000 black bears
      #58263 - 04/06/06 05:02 AM

I saw a comment recently that it is estimated that there is 750,000 black bears in the USA alone.

Can this be true?

What would be the estimate of how many black bears are hunted are killed each year? Anyone have any idea?

Thanks.

John,

I think that the population figures you have are pretty close. In many areas they are expanding.......many of the areas have high human populations, too.
Alaska F&G estimates for the bear populations in Alaska are as follows:

Black Bear: over 100,000
Griz/Brown: 35,00 or better
Polar: 3-4,000

F&G estimates always are on the very conservative side.

That number wouldnt surprise me at all. Here in Pennsylvania it is fairly developed and decent population and we still have an extimated 15,000 black bears. Hunters harvest about 4,000 bears a year here. Sorry I can't be much help on the other states.

The estimates for the black bear population in Tennessee are from 750 to 1500 total individuals. 171 black bears were tagged during the 2005 season. This info is from online sources.

Unfortunately for me, the bear population is at the opposite end of the state.

I just hope we see about 20 of them in Idaho the last 2 weeks in June.

Wisconsin's Black Bear population is estimated at 15,000. The Black Bear harvest for 2005 was 2645 animals tagged. IMHO the total bear population estimate is very low.

I forgot to add that about 2500 black bears are taken in Alaska annually........where I live, the season is only closed by the winter weather........I'm allowed to take two a year.......areas with no closed season are actually quite common where BB are concerned.

So it seems a 10% tag rate on the population would not be impossible and probably 75,000 black bears would be hunted and taken each year?

Quite a respectable and impressive number if the case.

What would be done with most of the animals, meat and a new skin for the fireplace?

Hides are great at different times of the year..........I'm partial to making a good sausage from the black bear.

Sausage from black bear is great if they've been feeding on greens or berries. I've ate a lot of black bear and find it tasty. Chili, cabbage rolls, sausages, and so on. Cook it done, it is like pork and can be susceptible to trichnosis.

DP,

You're right about ol' trichinella spiralis........one of my friends got trichinosis from eating "rare bear" provided by someone who should have known better........he was very sick and has muscle problems to this day, many years since the incident.

You in shape yet???????? I'm looking for someone to roll me up the mountain this fall..............

I wish I were in shape. My workouts have gotten few and far between since I started having more problems with my back. I may be heading under the knife again. If I do, it'll be after September because I will be in the mountains after Mr. Curly horn.

I was kinda hoping you were in good shape and would just strap me onto your packframe and haul my sorry carcass up the mountain!

Hey DP,

Total us up and we make half of a real sheep hunter, eh? My legs and feet haven't been better in years, but my weight is way up........should make for a slow hunt. but older guys like me should expect that, eh?

Hope your back gets better..........

Whether it is or not, I will be in the mountains chasing those glacier ghosts...

I noticed as we age a little, the pounds tend to add up a little quicker than in years past. I had a lot of work to get down to fighting weight after the holidays this winter. I'm ready to go now, if my back cooperates. Wonder if anyone has sledded their pack and sheep around in the mountains?

Looks like I lied. I'm down and out, no hunting for me this year. Surgery is gonna happen when we hear if disk replacement can be done or not.

Black Bear is starting to be noticed here in Connecticut. I know of two auto accidents involving bear so far this year and sightings been making the news.

I know of at least a dozen accidents involving bears last year in Co. When I was there we could not keep the bastards out of the garbage. We also had one walk into the local country general store, he was shot off the tire rack inside!
