The Royals are impressive - the Imperial - well, spectacular.
Those big horns are nice too.

Impressive pieces of game, congratulations on the hunters and on the guide!
I did not know that crossbow hunting was popular in the US (re. the pronghorn photo); in France it's illegal to hunt with a crossbow while bow hunting is legal.

Crossbows are not nearly as popular as bows..but they are used..laws regarding crossbows are different from state to state as to their usage and seasons allowed...

See the state listings below--
I have a very good friend who lost is left arm in an electrical accident years ago..he was granted a permit to hunt with his crossbow here in Montana... so even in states that are heavily restricted, there are always exceptions..

Same would happen here, RIPP, however many claim to hunt with crossbows.
We try to school them to use real arrows, weight wise, to improve penetration on the bigger game.
Filling aluminum crossbow bolts with salt will improve their performance by getting their weight up over 500gr.
Cutting tip broadheads also improve penetration and will slide around large bones and keep penetrating instead of digging in and stopping or bouncing out as is prone for chisel points (I am told).

This is one heck of a sheep anywhere..however it was harvested in an "unlimited draw" area..at least so I am told..

For those in other parts of the world, an unlimited area ..you get a tag when you apply..however season closes as soon as the quota for that area is filled..it is the hunters responsibility to check in often to make sure season is still open..SO, typically the game in this area get harvested sooner..and less potential for older bigger rams to show up.. was NOT the case here..good for him..

Not a 2018 kill, but a very recent British Columbia harvest of a Roosi. that B&C scored at 419.

That looks like one of the Arizona or Colorado ranch-produced non-typical deer, through the use of special feeds.

I wish! Unfortunately I was not the successful hunter. The photo was merely to show a spectacular trophy that not many have seen to-date.

This came out of one of the transplanted herds in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. I have had the pleasure of viewing other very big bulls from these herds which have only recently been subjected to a very limited harvest.

Here is another bull from the same southwestern region of British Columbia as the first Roosevelt Elk shown above. This is an October 2018 harvest that reportedly has a green score of 392. We are going to see some great bulls coming out of these new herds. Alas I was not the lucky hunter.

Ripp they transplanted several herds into the SW mainland of BC 20 or 30 years ago.

Daryl: these are from one of the herds on the mainland in Region 2. The guys who shot the two bulls I have shown both commented they had seen a much larger bull, but in a place where they could not get to it.

I figured AND it makes sense..

It always happens,,the transplanted herds produce incredible horn/antler growth.. seen it time and time again..

Thanks for posting this..find it incredibly interesting..

I "harvested" three fallow yearling bucks for meat this morning. Unfortunately not wild deer though! A .222 Remington performed the brain shots. The three deer are on their way to some Burmese vineyard workers BBQs this weekend.

Me and one of my son's in law. I shot my elk and readio'd him to come up to help me and on the way he couldn't resist shooting the buck!

Had to use my backup as...I busted the stock on my primary rifle. This one's a Winchester Model 70 circa 1954. .30-06

Packing out one of my deer.

One of the 5 coyotes I shot during August and September while elk hunting.

Yes - agreed!

I do note the gumbo on your boots, Rod - I sure don't miss that stuff - hate having to walk in it, getting taller and taller, then it breaks off and twists your ankle. Some is worse than other - depends on the area around here.

North of here, Ft.St.John and Dawson Creek, the gumbo is really bad. Go into the bush on dry roads, then it rains, you are stuck there until it either drys up or it freezes- can't drive out without chains.

Not sure honestly..didn't ask..as width is not that critical for a good B&C score.. big deep forks, front and back make a good score..if its a good 5x5, heavy with eye guards, then look at the depth of the forks..I shot a mule deer years back that was 31" but didn't score well as his points were all broken off from fighting...Having said that, mule deer's ears are "typically" 20-22" wide..so looking at him, his is probably 22-24 wide ..the smaller one that is..

Spent Thanksgiving weekend in the woods/hills as its the last weekend for big game in Montana..was after the illusive trophy mule deer..the area was hit especially hard last winter..finding dozens of dead deer in the snow in the spring..not much for deer size but spotted 14 bucks total. Had a great time being out and about..another year in the books..

Ripp and all in north west US / western Canada, please stop posting photos of such big animals! You were gifted by God to live in such a land of hunting bounty and this is really unfair to the rest of the world. I am now becoming extremely shy to post photos of the tiny quarries one can harvest in western Europe!

One of my all time best friends and I got in on an awesome hunt..fresh snow--cold temps that day, about -10F--but was a great day for a hunt.. lots of deer moving everywhere..

I have a great deal of empathy for you Louis. I have never shot a trophy like the ones in this thread, but rather have usually shot the first one I've seen that year. At times, my hunt is over the first day - lol - spike or 2-point bucks, 3 point bucks, 2 point or spike bull moose - lol - I don't even keep the antlers - why would I? - they get turned into powder measures or short starter knobs for my black powder shooting obsession.
I do like to see trophy's though (anyone's trophys), harvested by those who actually put some work into their obsession.

While growing up and even into my early 30's, that is all I did as well..first available animal I come across hunting got taken..frankly, hunting was a lot of fun doing it that way..then started looking for bigger and older game...NOW, just happy to just be out in the woods and enjoying the sights, sounds, smells of nature..IF Mr. Big comes along fine, if not, that's fine as well...

Like a friend told me a long time ago, antlers/horns make awful thin soup..

Louis;

I've shot some nice critters over the years but I cannot say I'm a "trophy hunter". We are pretty much meat hunters and like Daryl and RIPP {in his younger years! LOL} I have often shot the first eligible critter I've seen. Especially true with elk. Deer I've waited on from time to time. LOL.

But some European hunters {and deer hunters in the American Deep South} often do have something else going for them, and that is large bag limits.

Here in Idaho for example, basic tags are 1 deer, 1 elk, 1 bear. Then one might be able to apply for an additional one deer or sometimes elk, and in more rare cases, depredation tags are issued for culling crop damaging animals. And in recent years many units have allowed 2 bear. But basically it's 1 animal per species. Contrast this with some Southern states where the bag limits are 1 deer per day for 3 MONTHS. But then, in those areas, often there are limits on the number of bucks that can be taken and of course often they do not have the range of species we do in the Mountain West.

I have read that in many areas of Europe, the bag limits can be very large depending on the management plan of the lands on which the hunt takes place.

My wife's family are all German immigrants and settled in Michigan before WW1, between the Wars and then after WW2. First thing they did when they got off the boat was...get a job. And one of the first paychecks from that job got spent on a rifle and a hunting license! It was a BIG DEAL to them. Here, hunting is an "Everyman's sport". Our history of hunting flows from anti-monarchical concepts of egalitarianism and thus the laws and regulations and bag limits reflect that. In many states {this is changing!} it is also a relatively inexpensive hobby. Of course, now as land use practices have changed and in states like Texas, ACCESS to lands upon which one may hunt can be very expensive. In the American West, tho, there is still vast acreage where one can simply roam unmolested by private interests. This, too, is changing of course, and restrictions on vehicle use and whatnot comes into play.

But we do have it good in so many ways. As RIPP says: "NOW, just happy to just be out in the woods and enjoying the sights, sounds, smells of nature..IF Mr. Big comes along fine, if not, that's fine as well... "

Very true, especially where the vistas are vast and the sights glorious as they are where he hails from and where Daryl and I pull the trigger on the first buck that staggers into our sights!!

Bon chasse!!

Dear 9,3x57

Thank you for your detailed explanation. It is all understood and was understood from start; when I was asking Ripp to "stop posting photos of such big animals" it was really meant to be a joke.

To the contrary of Germany and Central European countries formerly part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, France (but the north-eastern part, Alsace & Lorraine, which were taught good hunting practices by the German between 1870/1918 and 1939/1945) doesn't have really established hunting traditions but for what we call ‘vénérie’, which involves big game hunting (red deer, roe deer, wild boar, fox ; and wolf in the old days) with hounds with followers on horseback, but we will not speak about ‘vénérie’ in this post.

As you mentioned it for the US, folks in France gained the right to hunt from the Revolution in 1789 ; before that hunting was only for the nobility and poachers were harshly prosecuted. Hunting rights are therefore deeply rooted in rural communities and hunting is quite unsophisticated, to say the least; hunters usually seal an area, let the dogs in, shoot indiscriminately at every piece of game that goes out, then share the venison and celebrate. It is quite difficult in such rural communities to get tags for individual hunting, such as stalking. This type of community hunting is still inexpensive but, as you pointed it out, is subject to bag limits; in the village were I live, this year's bag limit for the shooting syndicate (circa 20 active members) is of 16 roe deer and no limit on wild boars (we don't have any other "big" game in this part of the country). As I mentioned it, I cannot get from my village shooting syndicate roe deer tags for "individual" hunting as for them the sport is to be "collective" and, although they allow me to shoot wild boars, I must share the venison of those I harvest; all very tribal in fact!

Although it is becoming more common, stalking is therefore not the norm in France and if you want to stalk, then you must either find village shooting syndicates that will sell you some of their annual tags but there are not many, or own/rent huge tracts of land in order to get hunting rights on this acreage, or hunt with the French Forestry Commission that retains hunting rights on government-owned land. In such circumstances, your annual bag will only be limited by the time you can spend hunting and by how deep your wallet is.

In my own case, my main limitations to hunting are currently time and managing my wife’s expectations : time as I travel a lot for advising on international projects and wife's expectations as many wives are under the impression that their husbands should dedicate all their available time, mainly if they are often away, to fulfilling home/family related duties. Despite such ‘adverse’ conditions, I managed so far this year to harvest one roe deer and two isards, and I may hopefully get some more before the season closes on 28 February.

As we all do, I first go hunting for the pleasure of being alone or with a good friend out in the hills for one or for a couple of days, afterwards I select the quarry on the trophy's size, and then I always take back the venison I have harvested with me. Mountain hunting also involves for me another important dimension ; it is every year the renewed personal challenge of remaining fit enough in order to overcome difficult mountain hunting conditions and the personal satisfaction of having done it another year again!

I will post photos of my hunting season in France, small bag but real enjoyment, as soon as it will come to a close and, in the meantime, I look forward to enjoying my peers’ posts on the Forum.

Best regards.

Louis

Louis

For someone who knows nothing about how hunting works in France, that was very interesting..thank you for the explanation..

Makes me realize how lucky I have been in my lifetime with access to large areas of both forest and private grounds to do my hunting/hiking/fishing in...

As to the wife's expectations...best keep them happy, it took me several before I figured that one out..

Forgot to post this one a while back in the fall.

Coyote.
SIG SP2022 9x19
184 yards (lasered)

Shot by my son. Obviously some, shall we say, luck, but he is a phenomenal shot with his SIG. He shot from prone, lying in the back of a pickup while 2 buddies spotted. First shot was high. I forget his range estimate, but it was very close. They saw the strike and he adjusted for it and at the next shot the critter disappeared in the grass. His buddy who was spotting couldn't believe what he saw. "You SHOT IT!" Stuck it in the ear.

We take only absolute dead to rights shots on noble game, but on the gang bangers of the woods, any hit is cause for rejoicing.

My son carries his SIG every day and because of his work has opportunities to use it at targets of opportunity. we use our pistols on all sorts of critters; ground squirrels, grouse, snowshoes, etc. His 2022 has a really superb trigger pull and that helps.

A while back he shot a coyote at about 40 yards and I thought that was a poke, but this yote takes the cake!

I'd understand if he'd used a model 29 4".
184yds. is a REALLY good poke for a 9.
This is not meant to take ANYTHING from him. An EXCELLENT shot indeed.
Just stroking Art a little bit.

Daryl,

I can almost feel the love..

Seriously, THAT is one hell of a shot..I do some shots everytime I go to the outdoor range at longer distances..usually stopping at 100yrds.. figure that is as far as I would ever shoot..

I have quite a few Sigs, both the newer generations and some like this..but have to admit, use various models anymore for practice--Glock, H&K, Walther, CZ.. like them all..rarely shooting any of my wheel guns anymore..like the higher capacity as multiple attackers seem to be the new way of attacking anymore... so practice for that scenario..having said that, and yes Daryl, this is the proverbial olive branch for you , one hit from a Model 29 is an immediate game changer..

Shot a jackrabbit years ago at 142yards--with my 8" Colt Python..like your son, 9.3, I carried that thing everywhere for a while...but this puts my shot to shame..YOUR son is to be commended..great shooting..and yes, when it comes to these guys and wolves, any shot is a good shot..

Those are seriously long game shots.

Used to practise out to 300 meters quite regularly with my S&W 4", .44. We had a sheep silhouette on that range's bank, making a good target. I guess the actual range was about 305/6 meters. That's roughly 335 yards. It was a good poke. Elmer told me it was "good practise" with a 44, especially if ever I "need to take care of business and don't have a rifle."
Got that bit of wisdom from him in a phone call when I wore the uniform.

So, long range pracitse can pay off.

Wow, that is some shot, awesome really, I think a lot of skill & practice involved !!

I shoot a Goose in the head at 75ish yards with a Ruger Single Six with the 22mag cylinder installed but that was 90% bad luck for the Goose !

Missed a lot of Bunnys at 25yards lol !

Back in Kentucky in '87 or '88 I shot a groundhog in the head as it peeked over it's hole at 60 honest paces with a Ruger Single-Six w/ the .22 Mag cylinder in it, so I have no doubt you did it, Sarg!

We use our AR15's for ground squirrel shooting and shoot a lot of them with the Ar's, and we have a standing joke about misjudging the scope line over the bore at bayonet range...too many misses there!

Hundreds and hundreds of elk...Montana

I tried to find the video that is not FB related..but did not find it...so if you are not using FB you probably won't get this..sorry... pretty cool..Huge herd of elk in the Madison Valley..

I drive through this area every other week for work... wintering grounds for the elk..Its interesting, prior to the re-introduction of the wolves, they wintered a lot on the other side of the mtns in a different valley (Gallatin) ..once the wolves got going, they started wintering more here in the Madison, as its much more open terrain and a lot less snow, which makes it easier for them to spot the wolves coming and also easier to run in an attempt to get away ..only bulls winter in that same area now in the Gallatin..and they hang out on the very steep mtn sides...

Holy crap that's a lot of ELK!

Elmer used to say "hitting at long range with a handgun was purely accidental, but if you practiced at long range with that handgun, you'll have more long range accidents than someone who didn't".

He came out with that when the, as he put it, "The Askin's Tribe" "started riding me" about the mule deer he shot with the first 4" .44 mag from S&W and the first box of Rem 240gr. G/C bullets. The judge was with him - somewhere around 600 yards he'd guessed IIRC - or was it 450? 450 would not be difficult due to the short barrel and tall front sight. To shoot at 334yards (approx), I only needed the bottom orange plastic level with the top of the rear sight. Holding on that line gave an easy sight picture. That gave the other 1/2 of the sight to be held up for longer range. I only ever shot mine to the 334yards or 305 or so meters. With longer barrels, more sight has to be held up.

I spent an afternoon with Bob Hagel in Salmon, Idaho with my then small son. Bob was as you remember a good friend of Elmer's and Elmer sort of raised him in the woods and taught him a lot. I asked Bob about that shot.

He winked and said "Elmer wasn't a liar but he may have exaggerated a bit." bob then went on to say this:

"But Elmer was the best pistol shot I've ever seen. One day we were riding and spooked a grouse that flew across a meadow and landed at the treeline. Elmer drew his 4" Model 29 and right there while sitting in the saddle said he saw where it landed and stopped. He thumbcocked the gun and calmly took aim and broke the trigger. he then reholstered the wheelgun and calmly took up the reins again and said 'I got it', then turned his horse and walked her over the meadow and offsaddled to pick up the dead bird. I paced the meadow and it was over 125 yards. He was a very good shot."

I am convinced that taking shots of opportunity with a constant companion reduces the "luck" involved and on some shots few are capable of, eliminates it entirely. But still one is faced with the mechanical accuracy of the gun, and that alone adds a dimension of chance to any long shot. My son who I've mentioned before is one individual who shoots far less than many guys I know who shoot competitively but I can't really name a single one that can outshoot him on woods critters and such. It's a different game for sure.

By the way, the whole town of salmon was then full of people that would tell all sorts of funny stories about Elmer. I had some long chats with people about his antics in town. He was quite a character!

I treasure my talks with Keith, although too few & only a few. I still have my correspondence from Elmer as well as some letters from P.O.Ackley.
I wrote Parker O. about the .458 2" data he had in book #1 being low in speeds to what I had chronographed myself and that I had gone on to develop some really impressive loads with powders available, even though I did still had a few cans on HiVel 2.
He asked me if I would be so kind as to send him my data for book #3 that was reaching completion and I complied. He wrote that not very many people had their own chronographs at that time & congratulated me on working on that ctg. He thought it would be one of the best for heavy game in N.A. as Frank Barnes had wanted it. A month of two later, I learned of his passing on.
Shortly after Parker died, I had heard that book #3 would be published, but I have not seen it.

YES, but the lighter ones give a nice contrast with the crosshair..

Washington hunter sets new world-record for Shiras moose

https://www.khq.com/news/washington-hunt...oYT_j5pJRwrPyks

In total the bull moose’s antlers had 242 inches of aggregate tine length, according to the Spokesman. Hall said he wasn't sure but thought the animal was between 650 and 700 pounds.

On April 4, the hunter found he had set the new world-record for Shiras moose.

Good moose - long points and large paddles for that sub species.
700 is large, seems to me, for a Shiras moose. It appears to be a good one, though. The hunter, being some distance behind the moose, makes it difficult to just body size, too bad - hard to judge the actual size. Note the size of the rifle.
