Bison Hunt - Laramie Peak, Wyoming

Hi group - it's been a while since I've gotten on the forum... But you're always on my mind! Just got home from an amazing bison hunt with Twin Pine Ranch' 12,000 acres north on Wheatland, Wyoming. It was a challenging hunt and my bull took three slugs from my .338 win mag before giving in - a strong warrior! Almost got charged and stampeded by 100 of his brothers. A memorable hunt indeed!

What calibre/cartridge is recommended for Bison? is it all open range? or forested areas? 338 seems a ideal cartridge..........

For me, if I ever get a chance to shoot one, it will be the old way. Either a bow or .45-70. As for recommendation, from what I have seen it's subjective based on the recommender's preferences(and depending on state very restrictive to almost anything goes). I know of one person who shot one with a .50 Beowulf-and came back saying don't do it. He got his animal but said it was like trying to stop a Volkswagen with a BB gun.

This is my fourth bison hunt over the past 22 years. As previously mentioned, I used my .338 Winchester mag. It seemed to dispatch this beast adequately. Previously, I used a .30-06, a .458 Winchester mag and a .458 Lott. Of the four cartrages I've used, the .458 Win mag and .458 Lott were most effective, equally. In both incidents the animals dropped straight to the ground without moving, not so with the lighter loads. Both the .30-06 and .338 took multiple shots to finish the job.

Regarding a head shot, unfortunately I didn't think to do that but I did get this photo of the bison right after the kill. I apologize that it is in black & white as I didn't notice the camera setting until after the fact.

By the way, I also have .45-70 Govt. (the original cartridge developed in the 1800s for shooting bison) in a double rifle that I may consider using for a future hunt, pocket book pending.

I've shot 2 Bison, one with a 338-06 using 250gr nosler partition and the other with a 45-70 using a hard cast bullet and black powder. It took two shots with the 338 to drop the first one, the first bullet went through both lungs, it flinched and went back to grazing with blood pouring out it's nose. I could have just waited and it would have died with in a short time from the blood filling it's lungs but I put the second shot into it and it dropped were it was standing. The second shot took out the top of the heart. Both bullets were recovered about 4" apart just under the skin on the off side.

The second one with the 45-70, I shot at the base of the skull, it busted through the spine and back of the skull and it dropped in it's track.

American buffalo might not be as aggressive or exciting as other types of "buffalo" around the world but they are sure tough animals.

Here's the bison that I shot back in 1993 in the Black Hills of South Dakota. I used a Ruger Number 1 chambered in .458 Mag with one well place shot right behind the skull, through the spine. My son was only five years old at the time and had the time of his life! This big fella is now proudly displayed on my wall at home and is ranked number 99 in the world by SCI.
