My kid killed a lion and I'm proud of him.

Last week I cut lion track on the place, and followed it for a while, then gave up and headed back to check snares and do chores at home.

I told my son and last nite he decided, "Pops, I'm going to go up on the mountain and kill that lion you trailed".

I said, "Son, you just go ahead and do that..." {{{ Yeah, right. }}}

Running, 70 yards, after a long hike the rascal did it!!!

Pushing snow the whole way, his new corks were wearing a hole in his heal and he thought about turning around and heading home, but he decided to keep going. Rounded the top of Wilson a thousand feet higher than home, came around, crossed the fenceline on to our ranch, saw some crows and thought there must be a kill nearby. Then he saw it running hard. He swung the old FN .270 on it and killed it as it leapt for the south canyon.

I'm proud as punch.

Like many who live in the woods, he's never even seen a lion except this one!

52 deer this year he saved.

Did I say I'm proud of him?

Well done and you have good reason to be proud of him, who wouldn't be proud of a son who achieved such a feat with sore feet to boot. Well done young 9.3x57 and you will have a good rug next to the bed now.

9.3, that is a great story and you are right to be proud. The trouble with hunting big cats generally seems to be that they are virtually impossible to hunt without bait or hounds, yet sometimes too easy when these means are used.

Your son has not only killed the beast without hounds or bait but running as well - it really is boy's-own adventure stuff.

This whole thing has me head spinning.

I've SEEN lion in the woods before. No shots. He's seen exactly...ONE!

That I cut the track of this thing a week ago and told him about it and then for him to tell me for the whole week and the night before, "I'm gonna kill that lion", and then do it? Hilarious!

Along with Thanks and Grace there was a sip of Bushmills for all around the table last night!

I should add that he shoots on the college trap club and that cat started with a straightaway from the 20-yard line only switching directions out at 70 yards. He's killed running coyotes with that old FN .270 so it goes without saying that Puttytat made a bad mistake in judgment...

update;

My son just called me and he went back up to back track that cat a ways. He also brought his rangefinder with him. He ranged the shot and it was at 130 yards. He guessed 70 as I posted above. I guess he ain't no judge of distance!

Merry Christmas to the deer of Elkview Ranch. They’ll never get a better Christmas present.

And it gets funnier.

Funny, because their “Santa’s” first name is my mother’s maiden name, Dillon, an old Irish surname that came down from the Norman de Leon; the Lion.

By the way, the .270 load was a Hornady 100 grain Spire Point running at 3550 fps. Through and through.

My daughter shot a deer with the Hornady 100 grain Spire Point in 6.5/.264 diameter in the 6.5x55 and it also went clear through.

I really did not expect that from either of them, even on a 100 pound doe or an 80 pound lion.

As you have stated..other than the one I shot--I have seen ONE other in my lifetime ..always cut their tracks..but never see them...

Tell the kid, Congratulations, good job!!

I have seen lions in the wild three times. Every time it was so quick, that afterwards I thought, "did I just see a lion?"

Some of my best memories of my kids are hunting memories...and even though both of them are in their 40's they are still my kids...we could have a whole topic just on that....

My son's was an average-sized female. It weighed 80 lbs/31.5 kgs. Another shot with hounds by a fellow we know here not far from my house the other day was a huge male and it weighed, brace yourself... 168 lbs/66 kgs!! HUGE!

Around here for full grown females they go about 70 to 110 pounds and males 80 to 175 pounds.

Damn. Why can't I run across a cat that looks like that. I haven't even run across a bobcat I can pass off as big.

Just once in my life I'd like to be able to tell someone, "that's a big bobcat."

Getting a mountain lion like that, I can't imagine.
