Since last here, I lost nearly everything in a bushfire back in Feb, '21 I was able to salvage the remains of my .72 Isaac Hollis, had it restocked, lock repaired, reproofed the barrel, and then fired a few shots off the shoulder. She will need a light lap to remove some patches of oxide. Pretty amazing. Most of my other firearms were totally destroyed and not recoverable

https://www.p-max.uk/cgi-bin/black_powder.cgi

This will show the difference of F,1.5F and FF powders.

My 12 bore has a 1-72 twist and shoots a light load 0f 4.5 drams very accurately. [not forsyth]

At 6.5 drams, you are starting to get into some power. FF

I need to find some 1.5F to try.

The Swiss 1.5 F I tried worked quite well, but was heavy per volume, meaning the same volume taken up by 78gr. 3F GOEX, held 85gr. 1 1/2 Swiss (7gr. more weight). The Swiss gave lower velocity by 60 to 80fps.
I fed the particulars into the program, Bruce, and it was 300fps low of what the load actually produced in my 28" bl. 1876 .50/95.

My 14 bore ML rifle did 1,550fps with 165gr. (just over 6drams 2F GOEX) with a .682" ball of 482gr.
I've not shot it with 1.5F Swiss powder - yet.
When I input my 14 bore data with 1.5 Swiss, it showed, it showed very close to what I got using 165 2F GOEX.

125FF and my 12 Bore showed just a few feet faster than I get with my Goex.

Accuracy with this mild load is 1.1/2" three shots at 100 yds.

It shows the pressure difference at the same velocities.

Even though slower powder is less efficient, if you use more, you can achieve a higher velocity with less pressure.

Then you just need to check accuracy.

Heelerau,

Your gun was made for these!

Yes - tapered paper ctgs work very well in the larger calibres.
In my .69 using .682" ball, 2 wraps of typing paper & 165gr. of 2F GOEX, got the same poi as patched round balls and the same load. Not only that, they gave exactly the same accuracy as well. At that time, I was shooting 1" to 2" 5-shot groups at 100 meters. Several groups ran 1" to 1 1/2".
Friend Dan in Montana found paper ctgs. also do well in his 16 bore flint rifle.

Heelerau

I have a 62 that has Forsyth style rifling in a 104 twist.

The bore is .623 and I shoot a .620 RB.

It likes a tight load.

New barrel and I have only tried 135 and 150FF.

My tapered paper cartridges and a .610 RB shoot same point of impact.

You may want to try a .715 RB, or what ever is .005 smaller than the bore.
