How not to check Your ML:

http://www.darwinawards.com/darwin/darwin1996-04.html

(4 December 1996, Indiana) A Jay County man using a cigarette lighter to check the barrel of a muzzleloader was killed Monday night when the weapon discharged in his face, sheriff's investigators said.

Gregory, 19, died in his parents' rural Dunkirk home about 11:30 p.m. Investigators said Pryor was cleaning a .54-caliber muzzleloader that had not been firing properly. He was using the lighter to look into the barrel when the gunpowder ignited.

As I learned elsewhere. It is a good idea to check any or old muzzleloaders to see if some old charge is still in the barrels. Measure a rod on the outside of the barrels. See how far the road will go inside the barrel. Any significant difference could be a load of old powder, shot or ball etc.

Having said that, I still have my great grandfathers old rusted side by side ML shotgun and have never checked it!

When I was hot & heavy into muzzleloading a while back. Probably a good 40% of the original ML firearms brought into the the shop for work were loaded. I remember worming the charge out of a single barrel shotgun once to find approx. 2 oz. of shot, maybe 3 drams of powder, and a German language newspaper used for wadding dated in the 1850's. Had a extremely minty 1862 Colt Pocket Police brought in loaded with conicals and still capped at about that same time too!

Check 'em all out!!!!

I have an very old double barrel m/l shotgun, it was a gift from a friend. His neighbor obtained from a relative when an old barn was torn down, the shotgun was way up in the loft. Likely not used in well over 100 years.

The night I obtained it I ran a cleaning rod down the barrels, yep, the left had a charge. Wormed out wads, shot and black powder.

Check them all folks, even that reproduction you bought from a newspaper classified ad!!!

Even though these messages are pounded on every ML site and forum, "IT" death or injury from 'still loaded' firearms still happens. Thankfully, "IT" is becoming more rare.
