Yes - I-too could handle the other stampings, but R-Framage is a nasty.

Filling with epoxy, smoothing then painting to make it all the same colour might be the only way.

300F is about where epoxies let go and fail, isn't it?

Dark blue or black Ceracoat certainly sounds like a good finish to get all surfaces to match in colour.

OK so that action is written off for this project. No more discussion on it is needed at least on this "Tiger" thread. A new action or rifle as a base will be required.

G'Day Fella's,

NitroX, I would go with a 1970 or earlier Brno ZKK 600 (with Pop-Up Peep sight), in .318 WR Accelerated Express!

FYI, Robert Tobler (Face Book him), of Tobler Barrels in Robertson NSW, have all the gear to do .318 WR barrels.

Hope that helps

How do these work? And how does the scope mounts fit on? Especially QD mounts? Thanks.

Look very useful on a .318 WR or big bore.

Press the button on the side and it will pop-up. You can use Talley or Burgess rings with no problem. The ZKK trigger contains more parts than a Cockoo clock and sometimes very crude in finish. I suggest a 1898 type action in good condition.

The commercial `98 actions are usually well priced on UG`s and later being enhanced with Recknagel safeties, after market triggers etc they are rock solid.

You get to keep the barrel and the stock for another one too!

I would rather have a Mayfair but at 4-5 large its a 'gulp' so the PH line are good enough and do the job too.
The 358 NM PH had no problem doing a couple yesterday but of course 'around the fire' its 'just a PH!

G'Day Fella's,

Thats the one NitroX!

I have a 1970 vintage ZKK 600 (Monte-Carlo stock version), in .338-O6, and it is a great set up.
The reason I suggested 1970 and before is, I have seen a few after this date, and they are as rough as!
FYI, the Soviets invaded the Czech Republic (or was it already Czechoslovakia, before the invasion?) in 1968.
The quality and finish of most of there firearms, went to the dogs after 1970ish.

The original 7x57 Brno barrel of this rifle was re-bored to .338" by (whats his name ? in Hahndorf, Sth Aust) and then re-chambered to .338-06 and screwed back in, by B H-C.
I have adjusted the Ghost Ring Peep (it is adjustable for both Windage and Elevation), for Hornady 250grn RN and the original iron rear sight, for Hornady 200grn Spire Pts. This took a bit of "Regulating" (via reloading) but is now reliably consistent.

FYI, with 250grn loads, the .338-06, is about 200ish fps, behind my .338 Win Mag (10 feet from the muzzle).

Hope that helps

ZKKs with pop up peeps are getting hard to find in Australia and when found the complete gun is getting close to $1k remembering you are buying a stock and barrel which you do not want. Of course you could sell these and get some money back.
Personally I would go with an 09 Argy. While I love the ZKKs IMHO they are not pure Mauser actions. Something about that bolt release gets me in every time.

Daryl S,

Regarding epoxy cements and heat.

From , the J. B. Weld FAQ page:
"Original J-B Weld can withstand a constant temperature of 500º F. The maximum temperature threshold is approximately 600º F for a short term (10 minutes)." and "Because of the extreme temperatures of exhaust systems, we do not recommend J-B Weld for use on exhaust manifolds and catalytic converters. Nor do we recommend the product for repairs within the combustion chamber. However, in areas where the continuous temperature is less than 450º F, we do recommend our HighHeat epoxy putty stick.". Also "When fully cured, J-B Weld can only be removed by grinding or filing it off, or by directly heating the product above the 600º maximum temperature threshold.".

Speak of the devil a perfect candidate sold on UG today.
A 1975 ZKK600 in 7x57 with pop up peep sold for $400. Barrel was said to be useable but was being sold as action value only. They are out there.

Bugger,

My grand plan is actually a .318 WR and 7x57 takedown. If the barrel wasn't shot out could have been useful.

I must say I used to like the Brno ZKK's except for the ridiculous triggers. Then the chunky aweful badly finished CZ550's came out and lost all appeal.

G'Day Fella's,

NitroX, yes I know what you mean but they originally came with the Single-Set trigger and also, a conventional trigger as well. So many of the conventional triggers, seem to have been lost or are in draws in sheds and Gunshops!
So, if you know what you are looking for, and you can get into any Old Gunshop, you may be able to find one?

BTW, there is another 1974 ZKK 600, in 7x57 on www.usedguns.com.au but they want a $1,700.00 (AUD) for it!
Make em an offer for it and without the scope, and see what they say?

Regards
Homer

I liked $400 better.

A 4x Zeiss Diatal wouldn't go stray however. If the reticle was the right one.

Couple of thoughts. A good man with a TIG welder should be able to fill the Farage lettering with weld along with other pits. It can then be taken back to clean surface. But as has been said elsewhere you will be better with a different action and many will already have a bent bolt handle etc. Those older Brnos are strong actions and the triggers can be changed out. Plenty of older Parker Hales and BSAs also have good actions, also early Sakos.

As for takedown, the best to my mind is the H&H style with a stock coming off. No issues with return to zero etc. A takedown with removable barrel takes a lot more work - and cost. And to my mind having two barrels is a compromise. A 7x57 should be a nice dainty little rifle, whereas a 318 needs a bit more meat in the stock etc to soak up the recoil. A 318 with a 7x57 barrel would just be wrong.

Vladymere - interesting. I did not know JB Weld was so heat

insensitive.

It does make good bedding compound.

Thanks for the good reply.

No I am not intending to go to that effort on this action. May sell it off seeing the sapolice don't like the number of firearms I have. No idea if I can replace it.

I would love to source a CZ action/rifle with an integral peep sight. And build a simple .318 on that to start off with. Later more modifications such as a custom stock from the blank.

I do think the CZ actions are a little chunky.

Haven't moved forward with this project. Shortage of funds.

Read my last post.

Also if I had $5000 to spend on this project, I would spend it on hunting and use an existing rifle for the hunts.

I'm also more likely to restock my second Mauser M03 (Alpine model) before doing this project. A classic stock on it would be nice.

I have thought of using this "tiger" stock for a restocking of the Mauser M03 in the future. But I think a good plainer stock is more appropriate. I may even have one already. Have to look in 'storage', and if it is appropriate. I know I have several two piece stocks in storage.

But I think ONE DAY I still would like this .318 WR "Tiger" rifle. It must be a mental disease.

I also really wish someone would make custom barrels for the Mauser M03!!! A 6.5x68, maybe a .318 WR, a .375 H&H Mag longer than they make now. Maybe a 8.5x63 instead of a .318 WR, which they also no longer list ....
