Rolling Your Own

As I was sitting around waiting for my knee to heal, I noticed that I have a beautiful stock from a Mauser Magnum M98 (built for a 416 Rigby) just gathering dust.

Since I generally need little excuse for a new project, I was wondering what it woould take to build a new Mauser around the stock. Just read an article about this and it seems doable.

I would like, like mind you, to end up with a 505 Gibbs or 500 jeffrey.

Midway has Dakota receivers, and barrels seem pretty easy to get from the maker. I would send it out for reaming and barrel fitting.

Where is the best place to get a good, solid receiver?

I know that there a few folks on here who have built their own. Am I biting off more than I can chew here?

Grizzly;
I can't find the Dakota receivers on their web site; please advise the Midway catalog number for this item.

Thanks,
Don

Grizzly,

Olympic Arms offer both magnum Mauser actions and barreled actions in 505 Gibbs if you want them. Just download the catalogue - the product listing on the website is useless.

Cheers!

If I were looking for an action I would look at Granite Mountain Arms, Satterlee Arms (I have one coming in 416 Rigby) or Hein.

dondford-the receivers at Brownells are kind of buried on their site. Here http://www.brownells.com/aspx/ns/store/catsearch.aspx?c=2457&p=4816

You can pick up a CZ for about $500 versus a Dakota for $2500. And people wonder why Dakota is in bankruptcy.

I have heard some great things about Granite Mountain. And Empire.

I ran across a good priced 510 caliber barrel, old but still new in the box. I passed though, since it was just a bit heavy. It was a 36" barrel for an M2 Browning Machine Gun!

Shanster,

The link you have posted is to Waffenfabrik Hein whom other members have written about. They make absolutely beautiful rifles and have a true Mauser action scheduled to be launched in a few months. Karl Webber and Greg Hein are both members here and both are fine gentlemen whom I have met and hope to buy a rifle from. Considering that this would most probably be my only custom rifle, this shows how impressed I am by them.

Cheers!
