Barrel Length 375 H&H
      #63674 - 07/10/06 02:39 AM

I have a Brno 602 in 375 H&H w/ a 24.25" barrel. I want to shorten the barrel to make it handier, as well as have a barrel band swivel installed.
What is the shortest you guys would recommend I take the barrel to?

Thanks,
D

I have a ZKK 602 in 375 and a CZ 550 in 416 Rigby and both have barrels cut to 21" with Barrel band front swivel. Front sight is an ERA (NECG) Universal Screw-On Ramp with Red Fibre optic on both rifles. This ramp provides elevation adjustment and they both handle and shoot very well. I find the 21" length to be most comfortable for me.

Personally I like long barrels and 23 inches would be "the shortest" None of my rifles got anything shorter than 24 inches.

If the rifle handles like club it can often be fixed by slimming the barrel contour and reshape the stock.

Personally I wouldn't go for anything shorter than 24" in a 375 H&H.To do so doesn't make use of the ballistic potential of the cartridge.

21". When a faster powder such as Reloade 15 is used, velocity loss is minimal, and out to 300 yards that loss does not matter anyway. If the rifle is to be used for longer range shooting, then the 375 Wby has an edge.

In reply to:

Johan,

To be fair, you should admit to the fact that you're a 2 meter tall Viking.

Being a dwarf of only 175cm myself, I prefer shorter barrels, and will be chopping off my 25 inch 375H&H barrel to either 21 or 22 inches in the near future.

Erik

Erik,
Long begins at 200cm I'm only 191cm something tall-You have no idea how lucky you are, shorter people seldom get back problems and are more agile Hopefully I will shrink a few cm with age

375 H&H with such short barrel must loose a lot of velocity. Why not rebarrel to 404 Jeffery or 416 Rigby and get a 9,3X62

Cheers
/Johan

Don- I like 22" on heavy guns, be they .458's or .375's. I'll admit I do like the 25 1/2" bl. on my .375/06Imp. though.
; The 602 in .375 balanced nicely in my hands with it's factory barrel length. I'd not shorten it to less than 22".
; A couple inches makes a big difference to me.

My Merkel .375 DR has 23.75" tubes and my Dakota .357 bolt has a 22.25" barrel, but the dakota is 3.35" longer OAL.

Again I find myself agreeing with 500.....

My own 375 H&H sports a 23" barrel but shorter isn't the detractor one might think!
