have not seen many original Mauser, Oberndorf type B rifles. They did not have a pronounced “Schnabel” foreend. There is just a very slight flare at the tip. The tips are cut off with a curved cut, straight in plan but curved up-down. Looking at the enlarged photo as you did, I see a typical post-1912 to 1945 Mauser B stock with the uncheckered foreend and the rounded, seen from the side, tip.

your post is probably better directed at me, as he was only replying to my comment. I realise the image I had in my head of a Type B fore end was out, not sure why as I’ve looked at a lot of pictures of them but never never seen one in the flesh. Did Oberndorf ever checker the fore end anywhere on a type b?

I might be alone here, but grain aside I generally prefer the look of a B over an A

Imho, that is a mite highly priced for the condition.

Standart model Bs had uncheckered foreends, like the first 3 rifles I posted above. But sometimes you may find checkered foreends, 4th rifle or the 10.75 above. I don’t know if these were special order factory options or added by a retailer aftermarket . The literature, catalogs or the books on Mausers, give no definite answer.

The relatively subtle schnabel fore-end tip on the Type B is worthy of a discussion thread of its own.

The rounded, slightly flared tip with barely perceptible keel on the underside fits the thumb and fore-finger of the left hand perfectly, and is clearly designed to be gripped accordingly to allow the rifle to be pulled into the shoulder. Hence there is no need for checkering as the grip is at the schnabel.

I had a serious misunderstanding of schnabel fore-ends until I acquired a Type B and started shooting it seriously. Something of an epiphany to quickly discover the schnabel's true purpose!

Now I laugh when I see the oversized donkey-dick schnabels on some rifles offered for sale these days!

I like seeing rifles stocked for the use of the sights provided on the gun.

I’m up for that… you make some great points, I’ll see if the mods can move the relevant comments over

For any of our French speaking members. Is this available at a fixed 1500 Euro cost, or is that where the auction starts. This looks to be an S type sporter. Would this be importable to the US? Thanks

1500 euros fixed cost, not auction.

However, I must warn that NaturaBuy is not an option for foreigners to buy directly from them.

You have to try to get in touch with the seller by asking a question in order to then possibly be able to discuss a purchase. Everything then depends on the will of the seller, and many are not very willing for an export. Even buying something from Germany is difficult, and we are still in the EU. Therefore I don't know how things are with an export to the USA, there is also the problem of the language with people who don't always speak English.

I speak from personal experience as I tried to contact this seller to discuss the price of this rifle. The seller did not reply.

language problem become less than before. sometimes ago I had a question to someone in france and make the mail with translating from german (or any other european language) into french ( or any other european language) with https://www.deepl.com/translator. the other guy doesn't seems to notice this was made with a translator answer my question perfect.
the translating programs become better every week and deepl is maybe the best now.

There is no real problem exporting to the USA or Australia, an operation that we do routinely.
However, you must find a professional gunsmith who will take care of the acquisition of the rifle in France and who will manage all the documentation and costs linked to exportation.
Finally, and this is not the least concern, you must be extremely careful with this kind of announcement that remains vague as to the condition of the weapon.
The choice of relatively blurry photos and description should raise alarm.
In this case, to be myself interested in this type of weapon, I would not even spend a thousand euros on this Mauser whose condition is not as good as described (!)
