Anybody have any links or examples of rifles built on small ring/large shank Erfurt 98's? I have one and am not sure what to do with it.

do you mean the Karabiner 98a or the post war Reichswerke Erfurt hunting rifle?
if you have an original Karabiner 98a it could be worth more today than any sporter .

Gewehrfabrik Danzig small ring large tenon 98 sporters. There are quite a lot of them here in Canada -- I bought one thinking it was small ring, small tenon. I think they were mostly made between the wars.

Danzig is not Erfurt

they were made by the state owned rifle factorys Danzig, Erfurt and Amberg for a very short time after the end of WW 1 to find some new work but the allied stoped this. you can compare them with any other german made M 98 hunting rifle.
some collectors have the special taste to find all three of them. the rifles looking very similar only the makers name make them distinguishable.

Are they as versatile for a build as a regular 98?

if you talk about another caliber - you take better a standard action for .458 Win Mag or +

find pics of the rifle made by Gewehrfabrik Amberg = Gwf A, it seems they are the most rare

if the rifle is not butchered before or have a complete worn out barrel I would handle it as a collector piece.

Would a standard 98 bolt not fit?

Tradeexcanada was selling 98 bolts some a time ago.

I fit a standard bolt to it but super tight headspace.

tight headspace is good, better than off
just work it here and there carefully until its good or try another bolt that maybe fits better

If anyone has to use a different bolt than what the rifle came with, you can make the headspace ZERO, by expanding the neck of the ctg. cases by a couple sizes, then re-sizing the case to make a "new" shoulder for fireforming. After forming, make sure not to push the shoulder back.
I've been neck sizing my 9.3x62 and .375/06 Ack. Imp. cases for years and hundreds of shots each, with NEVER having to touch a shoulder inside a die or having to FL size them.
For hunting ammunition, I test for fit and function.
