Rigby "Tsavo" edition Mausers
      #373115 - 13/01/23 06:33 PM

Quote:

Meet the Rigby “Tsavo” – a new series of 12 limited edition .375 Big Game rifles, remembering two of the most feared man-eating lions of the 19th century, “The Ghost and the Darkness”, who were immortalised in Col. John Henry Patterson’s famous book ‘The Man-Eaters of Tsavo’. Each rifle bears its unique series number in gold on the floor plate, along with detailed engraving of the infamous pair of maneless lions. Their names – “The Ghost” and “The Darkness” – are inscribed on the Tsavo’s EAW swing-off scope rings, and the identity of their eventual nemesis – J. H. Patterson – is set into the bolt handle, along with their reported number of their victims (135). Stocked with specially selected grade eight Turkish walnut, the Tsavo’s looks and durability is further enhanced by Rigby’s London Best Oil finish and leather covered recoil pad. Each Tsavo is supplied with Rigby’s cleaning accessories in an exclusive leather case, styled to capture the intrepid spirit of the late Victorian era. #RIGBY #BIGGAME #LIMITEDEDITION #TSAVO #375H&H

Shouldn't they be chambered 303 British? I would go for that.

Another of my "dementia" posts.

A problem with using a tablet, among others, is one can not organise files and images as well. when saving. Unless one deals with them immediately. Also images usually need editing to fit decently O. A web page.

Will have to look for them.

A commercial reality. They have to sell. Probably 10,000 .375s sold for every ,303.

Also I'm guessing these would be "big game" sized rifles. A .303 would be better on a "Highland Stalker" sized action.

Order a custom rifle.

That's where it gets difficult. All of this is purely commercial and Rigby is in European continental hands and is therefore oriented towards this market direction. The cartridge 303 British is a good cartridge, but has no chance on the European continental market which is dominated by other traditional cartridges.

Rigby has just released 10 I believe Single Shot Falling Block rifles in 416 Rigby No.2. This cartridge is as yet only sold by Rigby and hasn't so far been taken up by any other manufacturer, and yet all the rifles sold immediately regardless of their high price. Rigby has a very large fan base of enthusiastic supporters and buyers. A short run of Highland Stalker sized rifles or even another run of falling block rifles in 303 would in my opinion sell. Big numbers no, a short run yes. IMO.

Absolutely true, as long as a company is satisfied with a small number of sales, but I would also have problems if I had to decide between caliber 303 British and 8x57I(R)S.

Normally those small runs tend to be quite expensive but they add to the mystique and collect ability of the brand. Luxury watch and car makers do it all the time.

"Tsavo" evokes Lion and Dangerous Game hunting. No one would buy a .303 for such a hunt today.

Were the lions ever actually called "the ghost" and "the darkness" in "Man-eaters of Tsavo", Patterson's book?

The story takes place in 1898 in Tsavo, at a time where the cartridge 375 H&H Magnum did not exist, but the cartridge 303 British.

The rifles used in the movie were a sporterized Lee-Enfield caliber 303 British, and probably rifles of caliber 450/400 Nitro Express and 450 Nitro Express as far as the Farquharson rifle and the double rifle are concerned. These were the calibers in use at the time, unfortunately not the cartridge 375 H&H Magnum.

Definitely good marketing by Rigby albeit in the wrong calibre.

The movie is irrelevant being very fictional though entertaining. It would be far more entertaining without Michael Douglas's boorish un-necessary character.

Considering Patterson used a 12-bore sidebybside shotgun and acLee Speed or similar .303, and borrowed a single shot it's really comppletely academic and irrelevant what a modern rifle maker chambers a Mauser 98 Rigby "Big Game" "Tsavo" model rifle in. Patterson didn't use a scope either ...

Wisely choosing a modern very desirable cartridge chambering which will sell well for actual safari hunting.

PS I did a search on "Man-eaters of Tsavo", "Ghost and Darkness" is not mentioned even once.

The skull and the “135’ for the number of victims.
I don’t fault it for that as much as I fault the lions looking s bit too much like the Pink Panther!

Rigby is just entering the arena of weirdness with their special rifles now.

The Tsavo lions were man-eaters. Man-eaters have human victims.

The skull is too phantom like for my tastes. But the cave of skulls and skeletons featured in the story.

I seem to remember a hand or arm mentioned in the book. Perhaps recovered otherwise being carried in the lions mouth. Certainly in Corbett's books there is a mention of a mandated tiger carrying an arm. Different story.

Simple fact man eaters eat humans. Gruesome but true. A reason for the fame of the story.

I agree. The look of the Lions is a bit disappointing as the actual lions are preserved in the Smithsonian. They could have obtained photos of them for the engraver.

It is a shame-to at least- that Rigby have stooped to such commercialism without going the extra mile to have the lions look like the actual animals in question. Well may be they did and that is what they look like????

They look very spot on actually. The poor old taxidermy may be one result for their looks.

Did the taxidermists at the time use large dogs as models for the forms?

Now if Rigby used better looking lions for the engraving, nomdoubt we'd see lots of complaint posts about the non authentic looking Tsavo lions as well.

The Field Museum Tsavo lions lack IMO proper width to the face. But if the actual skulls were used (?) the dimensions might be authentic. But it's possible only the skins were used.

John thanks for the photo. I put my last sentence in when I remembered the lions were reportedly unusual in looks apart from being mainless. So I am going with they are a true likeness of the lions.
