Mauser scope mount receiver holes.

HI All.
I have two rifles that have Mauser 98 actions built by British manufacturers. One is a Parker Hale .404 Jeffery and the other, a very recent purchase, is a Vickers .242
Both receivers have been drilled and tapped for scope mounts. they both have the exact same pattern. That is, two holes drilled in the front of the receiver, spaced .867 inch centre to centre and the rear has only one hole drilled that is 4.27 inches centre to centre from the rearmost front hole.

So its logical to assume that they were designed/drilled and tapped for the same scope mounts.
My question: does anyone know what mounts would suit. I'm hoping to buy some if we can track them down. thanks Hendj

Used to be a Redfield and maybe even a Leupold one piece base (virtually identical) that fit that screw spacing.
I have one on my .375, which is on a Mark 10 Mauser action.

Thats good news,Thank you DarylS, I had imagined that they might have been some discontinued Parker Hale or similar which would be very difficult to find. .

Unusual to see only one tapped hole for scope base mounting at the rear of the 404 Parker Hale. Most of the PH rifles I've seen and handled all had tapped holes for two piece bases. I have mounted a lot of scopes in early years using Parker Hale bases and don't recall seeing any for Mauser actions in one piece as opposed to the standard one piece for the SMLE 303 rifles of which I fitted many.

You need some of the original Parker Hale 404 ammunition for your rifle now to complete the set. I still have a little left that came with my Mauser 404. Used some on Aussie buffalo and a few other shots over the years, it was made by Norma and performed superbly on the buffalo.
Hope you can locate a base for your rifle.

I'm not sure a single rear receiver hole is a good idea for the .404 ctg.
Isn't that a .423", 400gr. bullet at about 2,300fps?

I agree that a three hole bridge mount may not be good enough in a .404. Interesting that every other Parker Hale .404 photo that I've seen has four holes . I use mine in Big Game Rifle Comp out to 100 metres with the open sights and its pretty accurate. its currently fitted with a German quick release side mount. I'm not really happy with that so I'm visiting my Gunsmith friend next week to get his view.

If using a 3-screw base, I would also glue the base to the action on any big recoil rifle.

Provided the bridge mount and screws were epoxy glued, as I do with every scope mounting I perform, the single rear screw should be fine. I have a Weaver bridge mount fitted on my Mauser 404 from the front receiver ring (2 screws) to the rear of the safari sight (one small screw), all epoxied glued and this set up hasn't moved in decades of shooting the rifle. Only has a 2x20 Leupold EER scope mounted but a low power lightweight scope is all you would need mounted in the normal position on a 404 rifle anyway.
Mounting a big heavy scope on any rifle that recoils heavily is asking for trouble with both scope and mounting system.

Use JB Weld. I have used it several times, haven’t had a sheared screw since.
