Mauser Type A in .30-06
      #357009 - 24/09/21 07:07 AM

Does anyone know the relative rarity of the Type A in .30-06?

I have not tried to keep track but I think I've personally seen (online and at auctions) more in 9.3x62 than .30-06. I would guess there were about as many produced in 6.5 Portuguese, 8x60, and 7x57 as there were in .30-06.

The rarest to me seem to be 8x57, .404. 6.5x54 Mauser, 8x51 Mauser, and .250 Savage. I don't recall ever seeing a Type A in 8x57 and I haven't seen any Mauser rifle of any type in 8x75.

Thanks Paul. Do you know if they made any A’s in .30-06 that weren’t Manton branded?

I have a TypeA square bridge in 30’06

I’ve never seen another in person and can’t remember if I’ve come across another in the ether.

The original Oberndorf Mauser Sporter Type A was produced in 30.06 in Patterns No 1,2 & 3, and listed as the .300 U.S./1906 with Mauser Code wyhlo.

The Treaty of Versailles that ended WW1 prevented German sporters being made in 8x57 but production was resumed in the mid 30's. The 8x60 was developed to get around the ban.

If so, its a bit hard to explain the 8x57 Type B in my gunsafe leaving the Oberndorf factory in 1922.
As I understand it, plenty more referred to in Speed's book.

Perhaps that's the reason (many/most/all?) were barreled-up with a .318 bore through the 1920s, rather than the .323 bore, even though throated for the later spitzer cartridge.

...or was it only the Type A that was restricted, perhaps?

Must buy Speed's book, but its become very expensive these last few years!

They might have been able to produce 8x57 sporters for export.

Oberndorf Mausers in .30-06 are exceedingly rare! Many a hardcore collector doesn't have one and in my travels around the globe I've seen only two: a very stuffed-up Type B that an American dealer at the 2015 SCI show wanted a fortune for, and another one on a farm in Namibia that had the square-bridge ground off to fit scope mount bases, bolt handle bent, new safe and trigger and a black plastic stock. Tragic...

Here in SA, the biggest Mauser collector has close on 200 really mint Mausers in his safe. He lacks rifles in two calibres, though: .280 Ross and .30-06. They are occasionally advertised on the internet by specialist dealers but look at the prices being asked for them and you should get a good idea how rare and sought after they are.
