Very expensive though! 1200 euros for a BRNO Model 1??? in 98% condition. That £817 sterling. I paid £80 for mine, admittedly some years ago, but only 2 or 3 years ago at Bisley there were a few at the arms fair going for between £100 - £120 ( about 150 - 180 Euro ).

Same thing for their .22 mausers. Overpriced.

k80 = They look nice; but they are french.

Is there anything wrong with French craftsmanship or design or is this just much and well deserved French bashing.

I've always wanted to get a Darne sliding breech double and was going to pursue it shortly, until I came upon your posts. I would have loved to acquire the Superbrite side opening over & under, also.

Again, are the designs used by the French bad?
Why don't they copy others?
If their stuff is any good, why don't others copy them?
Does this also apply to the Belgiums?

The Mirage fighter is also French made and is a one hell of an aircraft! I have used several Chapius double rifles and have never found them lacking.

Well, I went to the site, and my initial impression was that the Safari model was very nice. You can't always get a feel for something from a picture, but the longer I looked at this rifle the less I liked it. I looked at the clearance between the pistol grip and the rear of the trigger guard, and the knuckle of the middle finger of my right hand began to ache. I can't even imagine how it would feel to get your knuckle wrapped by a .500 Jeffery. After that the whole thing started to look less appealing.

Boomer,

I have seen an old 416 Rigby for sale in the USA that is identical to the Safari model on the Dorleac website. I wonder if smeone ordered the rifle in this specific configuration? I am not at all an expert and have very limited experience shooting others' big bore rifles. I just thought that the rifles looked nice and posted the link here.

Australia had Mirage fighters and i remember in the 70s everytime you watched the news another one had fallen out of the sky !!! I never thought much of French engineering [if you have ever worked on a citroen car you will know what i mean !!!and every vehicle thay make is bloody ugly]like the poms the spitfire, double rifles and other rifles, were the best things they made ,all their cars and 4x4s were pos !!The Germans are good ,but they are too good!! and make everything more complicated than it needs to be .American engineering has a good balance to it ,practicality etc,but quality control and going backwards has ruined it .Japanese have the quality because they are fastidious and dedicated .

French engineering is amongst the best in the world - this year French teams & cars won both the Formula 1 championship and World rally championship against very stiff resistance from other big Europen and Japanese mames ie BMW, Mercedes, Toyota, Honda etc.

Mirage 3 czs were maybe not the best but the Mirage F1s were extremely good fighters and the modern Rafale is state of the art. Take a look at the F111 we use here. Whilst it is a good a/c its costing a fortune to maintain and enough of them have fallen from the sky!!

Take a look at Airbus - an unknown aircraft manufacturer 30 years ago - now they are outselling Boeing by nearly 2 to 1. Whilst it could be argued its a European a/c its is predominantly French.

Vapodog - whilst you may not like Citroens, they were YEARS ahead of other manufactureres with things like Hydraulic suspension and headlights that turned when you turned a corner. Lexus has suddenly stumbled upon the idea some 35 years later and we see that ad on TV with the dear crossing the road.

Just a few examples that come to mind .

Those are beautiful rifles - I agree with 500 gns - there is not one there I would not be proud to own.

The F-111 went into service some 37 years ago in 1968. What do you think the reliabilty and maintenance costs would be on your car if it was that old, if was still running? And would be expected to be driven into combat at any time, and it's drivers life could well depend on it's functioning correctly and returning him home?

Hard for me to understand how people could criticize the French for engineering or design or anything else. Most major industries, especially the car industry, are pretty international and have all sorts of nationalities working for them. When it comes to cars at least I am happy that the French manufacturers go their own ways - everything else looks the same. Besides the 2CV was a heck of a lot of fun to drive. There were a lot of years in which American cars were just plain junk.

Those rifles on the D&D site are beautiful by any standard. Chapius makes great double rifles for the price, and they are worthy of consideration with American and German made doubles in the same general range. Besides, buying French occasionally means that they will have the means to buy some of the crap America foists on the world. (Garbage hamburgers, bad movies, dumb tv shows, for instance.)

This is going to be my only post on this matter of "French-ness" as I think that there is a need to close the "if it is French, it must be bad" allegation which is certainly wrong. The anger of many people over the French President's approach to the Iraq war is, strangely, not directed at Germany, another country that was very strongly opposed to this same war and whose products were noot boycotted anywhere, nor has anyone ever criticised German products because that country kept out of the war in Iraq. If Jacques Chirac is considered to represent everything French, was there ever a time when Bill Clinton was considered to represent everything American?

Georges Granger, Dorleac and Dorleac, Atelier Demas, Alain Vaussenat, Bruchet-Darne, Armes Ridon etc all make very nice guns in France and let us judge their products for what they are. ee cummings described a politician as "an arse on which everyone has sat except a man." Shouldn't we be discussing guns instead of politicians and their politics here?

I was not saying that the F111 was a bad a/c`. Quite the contrary. What I was inferring was that other a/c also have accidents/incidents depite the expensive ongoing maintenance costs & the Mirage 111 was no exception.

The aircraft here have had extensive avionics/airframe up grades at great cost to the Australian Taxpayer because they fullfill a unique role.

If my 37 year old car had the same sort of maintenance schedule it would be immaculate!

Georges Granger SLE game gun is second to none, best quality firearm. It should be, because France is the birthplace of wing shooting.
I don't know anything about those D&D custom Mausers.
