Gorgeous piece, Curl. Beautiful stock, and the perfect sights for that rifle. My compliments on your excellent taste.

Thanks to everybody for the kind words about my Type M. I particularly like the sights, and the setup works really well. It's such a shame the Lyman cocking piece sight is no longer available. Sometimes you will see one at a gun show or on eBay. My advice is to scoop it up. The price will seem outlandish, but worth it.

Great little hunter there Curl, would certainly be good for snap shooting in dense scrub!

For the record in answer to the OP's original question, no it seems that the Mauser carbines, the Type M being one of them, "were not made in calibres 9.3, 10,75 or 404 because their 19.69" barrels were of insufficient length for proper combustion of heavy powder charges"

This quoted from Ludwig Olson's book Mauser Bolt Rifles which has an extensive section on the Oberndorf Mauser Sporters.

Curl,

Do you know what your Model M weighs? I have owned a couple of them, though none as nice as yours and they are both long sold, but I never weighed them or at least I never recorded their weights. I ask because I recently read that the Model S is appreciably lighter than the Model M. I was not aware of this and would like to confirm it. I still have a Model S and weighed it for comparison purposes. On my scale, my Model S weighs right at 6 lb. 8 oz. without the Wehrmann peep sight.

Thanks.

Sincerely, Rob

So, nearly a half pound more for your Model M. That is quite a bit. I suppose the steel buttplate, steel forend cap and the peep sight could account for the difference. Also, a DST might weigh a bit more than the single trigger. And differing wood densities can add or subtract a few ounces as well. I think that without using the same scale and breaking down both a Model M and a Model S and weighing all the components, there is really no way to do this any more accurately.

Thanks

Yes, yours is the later version. The older one has rear sight which has round barrel foot and even sling front attacment is round the barrel model.
I has such one converted to 9,3x64 Brenneke but sold it on this spring to my friend. Mine was, in the beginning, similar like this:
