Mausers in films
      #344283 - 12/08/20 10:59 AM

I’m Always on the alert for nice rifles in films... best spotto for me is the film Tracker (2010) where Ray Winston carries a C96 and what I assume is a very Oberndorf Type C. Although not sure what’s going in with the rear bridge. Great film too.

The other is the high grade sporter at the start of public enemies where you see Purvis using the DSTs... Any other good ones?

Hi Wedgetail,

The first one seems to be a "sporterized" M93 Mauser, not M98. The second, seems to be a kind of "guild" Mauser M98 sporter.

Best!

Ok I stand corrected. It’s been a while since I watched it but something jogged my memory about it. Can you tell it’s an m93 by those photos? If so what are you picking up on?

If I remember correctly the character in Tracker was a Boer, so a 93' makes sense, same for the C96 pistol

Hi Wedgetail,

Because the bolt schroud is the one in 1893/95/96 Mausers. Without any doubt. Plus the general barrel and stock profile.

Best!

I very much like the 98 mauser used in “Father Goose” (Cary Grant film). It appears to be a Gewehr 98 Mauser barreled action with a nicely trimmed custom sporter stock, like a guild sporter, fitted. Nothing particularly special, but I like the style of such rifles, and how well the open sights usually line up for me.

Damn you, sir! I absolutely despised that movie when I saw it years ago, and still do, and now I'm going to have to record it the next time it plays on TCM just to fast forward to check out that rifle. Harrumph!

Now I'm even more curious! That dockside picture is infuriating. If only they could have shown it from the other side. I'll still have to run through the film I guess, whenever it shows up again. But thank you, Rothhammer, for the photos. Your pictures and scans add tremendously to so many of our threads.

Reminds me of all those ads where the clueless seller posts a picture from the left side. Or with the bolt wide open. Or with the trigger lock still attached. Or all the above. Might as well use a hand-drawn sketch.

In the film "Public Enemies" Christian Bale who plays Melvin Purvis uses a Mauser with DST to shoot Pretty Boy Floyd in the vinyard. You see some nice close up shots of the rifle and it being used.

That got me thinking... seems I'd noticed that before.
Looking at IMFDB, they have it as a 'Steyr Mannlicher-Schoenauer'. They also show what appears to be a GK or Model 1952 by way of example (White Heat was released in '49): White Heat IMFDB

Of the three stills shown on IMFDB, one shows the right side though not very well. It seems that the bolt handle is rather close to the trigger guard, unlike an MS:

Then I watched the following clip. At 00:06 - 00:07 the right side is plainly visible and the bolt clearly closes aft of the rear receiver bridge, to which a scope ring is attached. Notice also how he works the bolt at 00:33. It is not a Mannlicher Schoenauer.

If they're Hollywood movies, they probably aren't even Mausers.

Clever visual reference to the great Ned Sparks, Rothhammer (another fellow Canadian, by the way).

Yep I saw that. Commercial bolt shrouds, not long to see other details. Princess Anne looks like she’s resting the barrel on a rock to take the shot

Season 2, episode 1 of “THE OUTER LIMITS” entitled “Soldier”. The main character, Quarlo Clobregnny, steals a very nice, Teutonic looking Mauser 98 sporter, and threatens the family that has taken him in. This is at almost the end of the episode. I don’t know how to get a screen shot of this rifle to post, but it is quite unique looking.

I went back and looked at the OUTER LIMITS Mauser. It looks a lot like an Erfurt or Danzig post WW1 small ring AZ action factory sporter. It has a thin sporter stock with a low comb and raised side pannels. The bolt handle looks to have been reworked to a crude spoon handle shape. I like it.
