The email I received from them yesterday was a W J Jeffery email address that said they have asked a colleague for the records and will come back to me as soon as possible so I will kick back and see what happens. Like I said many thanks to Pugwash, owe you a carton my friend. At least.

Ah good! Likely the same name at W J Jeffery that Pugwash put me in contact with, he would be Friedkin's guy that is the UK manager of the W J Jeffery enterprise. Splits his time between London and the operation in Tanzania.
What will happen is that he will arrainge for a Friedkin employee in Houston, Texas to go out to the estate where the records are kept and look up/copy the info. This, I am told, only happens 2 times a year so there may be an extensive wait time.

Claydog, that's a nice old .404. I'm wondering if the early .404s like yours and Phil's, without magazine box side walls, have a wider follower than standard. When you get a minute, I'd really appreciate it if you could measure the width of the follower in your rifle and post what it is. My .404 was put together on a commercial FN 98, utilizing the standard magazine box, lengthened. Unfortunately, the side walls were widened just enough to barely get three rounds down, and I'm thinking about pruning the side walls of the mag box to improve the situation, but I'm reluctant to dive in and possibly cause other, unintended problems.

Dave as far as I know it is standard but I will have a look tonight and let you know. The bolt closes over three rounds comfortably but four is just to tight a squeeze.

Beautiful rifle and IMHO the Holy Grail of the 404J's.

I had a little Thomas Bland takedown 404J 30yrs ago, and currently a C&H 404J on a P14 action. Only fits 3 down (surprisingly) and weighs 8lbs 2.4oz.

Yours is a great rifle!

I'm not sure if this needs a new topic to be legit, but I'll give it a whirl. I have several boxes of the first iteration of the .423 Barnes X bullet (without the grooved sides), most are in 400 but one of the boxes is 350 grainers. I'm wondering if anyone here has data they've developed for the .404 with these early X bullets. If you have and you're willing to share it, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!!

I did receive the ledger page. Posted it a while back but here it is. Mine is 16706. Looks to have been made with 16705 as it is exactly the same. Seems to me they got an order and made two rifles to the specs and sold the second one. You can see it looks to have occurred with the rifles after. Would like to have the 303 serial 16703. Apologies I have not measured the magazine follower as yet.

G'Day Fella's,

Thank's for sharing Claydog and Yes, either the .303 (or the .275, #16709-10), would make for a "Nice Pair" for your .404!

FYI Claydog, have a gander in the Cast Bullets section of this forum, as I just posted a thread on cast bullets in my .404 Jeff.

Doh!

db404 I had a look at the magazine follower and while I didn't remove it and measure it is identical to the one in a columbian 98 I have. There is a fair bit of sideways room between the follower and the sides of the stock that make up the magazine box. Pretty sure it just standard. Works well though. Hope this helps. Thanks Homer I will check out the cast bullet post.

Clay Dog, thanks for your help. Doing some surgery on the magazine sidewalls is a bit intimidating, though potentially a heck of a lot cheaper than custom bottom metal. If I botch it, I'll just have to bite the financial bullet and send it off to Duane Wiebe. Thanks again!

IOWA 303 I have owned it for a few years now and use it as my back up rifle when guiding. It is perfect for that pastime because it is fairly light weight and very comfortable to carry over a distance. I would be surprised if it was much over 8 pound. Fits me well and functions as you would expect it too. I have lost it off the side of the toyota and had to back track with the GPS to find it, fallen down the side of an escarpment with it that I had no business climbing and even fire it at times. I had one serious charge from a wounded bull last year that it stopped and a number of wounded animals that it spined as they were heading for parts unknown so it gets a fairly good work out and is under no circumstances a safe queen.

Daryl you are correct on the case. It is padded canvas and the rifle goes in and out all day when I am hunting. I would say I am responsible for a lot of that wear.

Mike Pugwash gave me the contact I have now and is a different name to the one you noted. Claydog, what load / projectile are you using. Woodleigh 400's? Im interested to here your experience with this cal. Cheers Mick

Mick
I only use factories for a few business reasons and also don't really like to handload. I have been using Norma African PH which are loaded with Woodleigh 450 gn solids. They seem to work well but I would be lying if I said I can notice any difference over the Hornady DGS solids which I have also used. I like the solids because for what I have been doing as I carry much more than I shoot and when I do shoot it is usually as something is running off with an arrow or bullet of dubious placement and I want to break as much bone as possible. Very occasionally they are running towards us and I like the solid to penetrate the skull. I have used the Woodleigh 400 softs and they worked well on chest shots, usually pulling up under the skin on the far side and all mushroomed perfectly. Have used a few of the hydros and thought they performed alot like solids and I have never recovered one. As far as the 404 cartridge itself goes I would say it suits me to use it mainly as the rifle I have it in is so light and handy to carry. I think its around eight pounds and comfortable enough to shoot. As a loan rifle I bought a Zastava in 458 win that was going cheap locally and while it is not as handy a rifle to carry or point certainly kills just as well and may hit a little harder. I like the 404 but would be just as happy with a 416 or similar in a suitable rifle. I am not one of these guys who is a fan boy of any particular cartridge over another but I do enjoy a classic well made rifle.

Thanks for the reply. Ive got a 404 on its way. going to load 400 RNSP and try the hydros as well.
I had a light Mark X Mauser in 458 synthetic stock, it was nice to carry but brutal to shoot. Cheers Mick
