It seems they are trying to tempt me..

Hehe, the one i was looking at was the slightly cheaper, albeit scopeless, 7mm rem mag for $1475 from the same place!

7x64 would be more practical overall, but i like the idea of the extra barrels in like, .338 and .458 win mag that the magnum one offers. Haven't shot a 7mm remmy though. Did have a .458 win and have a .308 Norma mag. If it's similar then no issue.

Have 2 x 66 model mausers bought new which I hope will be of great amusement to my grand sons / daughters. An 8x68s with extra 6.5x68 barrels. 2 Zeis scopes fitted. A 375 h&h stock carved metal gold engraved (lion) rifle cased with 2 x knives carved ivory handles same as rifle. Can't understand how my tastes have changed.

more than just making up, I'd think!
And I'd even think, no need for 7 rem.mag. once you have a 7x64

Hi Ahmed,

Not to drive this off topic, but do you have your Anderson Wheeler Mk VII's yet? If so email me the photos if you wish and I will post them.

I was more thinking for along the lines of getting a .458 barrel some day to go on it.. But then again..An excuse for 2 rifles? lol.

Nah i got too much costs on at the moment to get a rifle, unless i have a big sell off..musing though..maybe..? :P

Bloody good buy there Ash!
A new Zeiss scope alone is that price!
The 7x64mm is right up there in relation to the 7mm Mag - unless you are Ripp!
Over normal shooting ranges there will not be much difference in drop.
Very tempting mate, good present for future Mrs Ash.

You guys are bloody bad influences..

The thinking is if I went the 7mm i could get a .458 barrel also - I miss mine :P
But the scope on the above makes that one more worthwhile..

Also, there is 4-10 Pecar that came with the Rifle, will include for an additional $400....the EAWs ( marked Mauser) are over $700 by themselves.

Nick Harvey used to promote as a paid tout (IMO) the Mauser 66.

I wanted one as a result. Same as Ahmed's, in 6.5x68 and 8x68S. Ended up with my Mauser M03 in 8x68S and 6.5x65 (that difference ie 65mm, still irks me!).

But they are a very heavy rifle, un-necessarily so. I believe most end up weighing at least 4.5 kgs all up or more.

Haven't ever played with one. I wonder how irritating the two stage bolt movement would be.

However those straight engraved walls on the bolt carriage, still do have a certain appeal. Certainly a distinctive look.

I've forgotten, do they have an internal magazine? What capacity? I seem to remember they did not have room for many rounds?

They certainly are an acquired taste.
I will wager anyone that has a chance to actually get to know one will quickly be converted, I know I was.
They are wonderfully engineered, and both mine are as slick as butter. Form and function is wonderful. The magnum actions ( group4) area little heavier, the 7x64 is a joy to carry and handle. Like most good things they got too expensive to make...around 60,000 I think ??
Oh...not to mention they are as cheap as chips, but im told demand is starting to increase in Europe....and in turn so will the price
Top feed magazine, capacity 3

Ha ha.

I retract my comments. The Mauser 66's are fantastic!

My post was before seeing your replies.

Maybe you can answer some questions at some time.

Can you get barrels for the Mauser 66 still? Or off the second hand market? I would assume in Germany, there is a fair number of barrels on the market at times. Are there any custom barrel makers? I seem to remember a post regarding custom barrel makers for the 66.

Yes they are well priced. Compared to modern Mauser M03's, Sauers, Blasers, etc. I did privately note that when Ash posted the links. Maybe a Mauser 66 in 6.5x68 will still happen one day. Would make it the FIFTH 6.5 mm in the safe ...

Back in 1993 I was going to get Brian Harre to make me a takedown Winchester 70 in exactly that, a 7mm Rem Mag, a .338 Win Mag, and a .458 Win Mag (or Lott). Actually I think the larger one was going to be a .416 Chatfield-Taylor.

Haha

Barrels come up second hand from time to time, I amagine cost would be prohibitive to fit from new.
The interchangeable barrel option ( within calibre's groups) is another fabtastic feature your getting for nothing.
I now have an offer on them both ( no money yet), so Im not offering a sales pitch, but John Im confident if you get one your M03 will spend a lot of time in the safe!!!.....get one and have a play with it.
Off to work now

Sounds like you're the perfect guy to ask questions then, Paradox!

What's the weight like on both?
Recoil on both?
Any dislikes about them?
What do you like about them?

How's the Pecar compare to the Zeiss?

Total Solutions Engineering had the ''setup'' to make extra barrels for the 66, as i wanted to have one 66 with 7mm ,338 and 458 Lott barrels ,so i could just have the ONE rifle for everything instead of 28

I have been owning two M66 since the mid/late 70's, they were the first 'real' rifles that I acquired. They are one in 7x64 (proofed in 1972 and scoped with a Zeiss 1,5-6x42) and one in 8x68S (proofed in 1976 and scoped with a Schmidt & Bender 2,5-10x56). They are extremely well manufactured rifles, extremely accurate and a pleasure to use.
Production ranged from 1965 to 1995 and 58,765 units were manufactured.

Yeah right. Keep telling yourself that if you get the three barrels, you will sell all or even any of the other 28 off.
