"London Best" Rigby again in .350 Rigby Magnum
      #284200 - 21/06/16 04:34 AM

From Rigby:
Ready to salivate? We are extremely proud of this .350 Magnum that has just been completed for a customer. It has a 24" stepped barrel with integral rib on the chamber section and iron sights zeroed to 65, 150 and 250 yards. This understated beauty has grade 10 deluxe walnut, Rigby half scroll and white gold inlay. Delicately contrasting, the colour hardened magazine box, floor plate, Holland pattern scope mounts, safety, grip cap and recoil bar add some real character to this best London gun. This is the first .350 Magnum to be completed since our return to London and we think we have got it just about right. A big thank you as always to the boys in the Rigby workshop.

The rib is an exact copy of the pre-war design. Often used for the early scope mounts found on guns of that period.

This one was £27k with the case, scope and mounts

Very cool to see the .350 Rigby Magnum again. I have a friend with two Rigby's a .275 and a .350 which have never been fired. He purchased them from the original owner on the condition they stayed mint.

Interesting to compare to Karen Blixen's .350 Rigby elsewhere on NE.

Classic or no classic, give me the Win type safety mechanism any day over the clunker typre.

Would anyone having a custom built bolt A request the original Mauser clunker?

Well, it's a bloody nice rifle, with all the bells and whistles. Unfortunately the stockmaker has shown a complete lack of artistic flair with that cheekpiece, it's a shocker. It looks like a loaf of bread hanging off the side rather than a pancake.
Sorry, but it lets the whole piece down for me.
Metal.

I have to say that this 350 Rigby has always impressed me with its simplicity and elegance with visual balance that is simply superb

The featured rifle seems to have just a touch heavier forearm than the Karen Blixens rifle but it really does have a gorgeous piece of walnut (although like metal, I think that the cheekpiece is a little on the large size especially at the front)

One thing I never get used to on the Rigby rifle is the way the foresight ends abruptly back some distance from the muzzle. I much prefer the Mauser sleeved ramp style of foresight ending neatly at the muzzle.

Now I could quite happily own and use that beauty that Von Gruff has featured.

Different rifles for different customers. The old rifles were mostly an off the shelf pattern (?). These modern custom rifles were made to customer specifications.

Von Gruff,

Thanks for posting the photos of my .350 Rigby Magnum. Lon Paul put it together using an original Rigby Magnum action with a stepped receiver ring and slant box magazine plus an original Rigby stock. It is the pride of my gun room.

Quite different stocking on these two rifles, Blixen's and XAUSA's. XAUSA's stock seems thinner overall, the fore-end definitely so. And shorter in the fore-end. XAUSA, do you know from what rifle the stock came from ie a Rigby what?

I like all three rifles. Whether a vintage one, as long it was in reasonable condition especially the barrel, or a modern one. For me, plain and without much ornamation. I like the Blixen rifle especially but not its "busy" top of action.

At one time I seriously thought about the .350 Rigby as the calibre of choice for my "Tiger" rifle never ending saga. But for some reason, I just don't like the .358 calibre. Who knows, feelings can change.

Here is another example of an early 350 Rigby. It is Lon Paul's personal rifle that he carried on a bear hunt with me and used to stop a large wounded bear as it was about to escape. Above it is my Enfield 9.3x62 that I was modified by Lon.

There are subtle differences in virtually all the old Rigbys as they were built by hand and often were special ordered. So are the new Rigbys, so it is not surprising to find some differences. But all the newer ones I have seen and handled were noticiably meatier than the old ones.

I do like those two rifles Phil.

A question, the rifles you handled, ie the new ones, were they all the standard "Big Game" model? Which is a different style of rifle to the one featured in this thread. The standard off the shelf "Big Game" model is not meant to, and does not replicate the vintage design

What do people think of the mount bases. On one hand a consideration might be how easy is the rifle be to top feed? But I don't think it would be a serious impediment especially if the owner/user was used to his rifle and used it enough. A scope in place on any rifle would be more an impediment. I think the customer wanted the Rigby "signage" to be still visible.

I do like that it cleans up the top of the action. And compared to the chunky bases on the Blixen rifle, allows a better sight picture.

I do like the old pop up peep sights on the old rifles, which no doubt would be possible if ordered that way.

.350 Rigby Magnum - rechambered to .375H&H

The way it should be done , if you like to come close to the original Rigby.
The square part over the barrel is not a "shortened" rib, but intended to accept tha front mounting base.

If it is made in that way you have free look on the front receiver ring (and markings).

I personally don´t like the clumsy looking H&H mounting, espacially on a Rigby.

Certainly nothing wrong with the .350 calibre - especially if you use Hydros!

The stock was the original wood on a slant box Rigby. Karen Blixen's rifle appeared to be made in the post-WW I Mauser style, while my rifle more closely resembles the pre-WW I commercial Mauser sporters.

Finding an original stock like that one is a matter of luck. In my case, bad luck was also involved, since the sister to that stock, as well as two slant box, stepped receiver ring Magnum actions of mine were in the fire which engulfed Lon's workshop. The actions survived, of course, but it remains to be seen if they can be salvaged.

Strange to have a machined integral scope mounting block on barrel and then dovetail the receiver, cutting into the engraving to mount base.

The only explanation I have been able to come up with is that the scope was too short to mount using the barrel flat as intended. At that time, the most popular scope was the Zeiss Zielvier or equivalent, and most were mounted with rings that fit the main tube, rather than the objective.

As I look more and more at some of the older rifles (especially the Lee Speeds lately) I seem to be noticing a similar trend toward "beefier" rifles. I wonder if this is due, at least in part, because today we tend to do more of the "traveling" portion of the hunt via automobile rather than on foot? With less need for a lighter rifle for carrying, the added weight can help with recoil.

As for the pictured (new) Rigby, it is nice to see a modern interpretation of a best grade Mauser. It makes me wonder what the older rifles looked like when new. Were the colors as bright? The wood as finely finished? And how does this one shoot?

I do like this mounting system, though I do not mind any of the other shown with one on Vixens rifle been the least preferred but not unliked.

I wonder if Rigby had the front sight set back so far for a reason. Like so the muzzle could be docked if the crown was damaged without losing the front site. I did not like the look originally but I do now. A bush repair so to speak. Anybody know the reason for it?

I absolutely would - I would insist on the original safety. It's all I've ever used and I don't like low mounted scopes so it's no trouble. My rifles have claw mounts or side mounts (or just iron sights) so there's room. If I was having Roger Biesen make me a .270 I'd go with the Winchester safety.

I really like this rifle of Rigby's - they're Big Game series is not my style at all (but I'm sure perfectly functional and shoot like a dream) but when they get an order for authentic, traditional rifles they can really knock it out of the park. I rejoice to see them doing so well.

For a custom .350 Rigby I would have nothing but the Mauser shroud-safety...I swallowed the hype of M70s safeties
on custom mausers and spent big on some Joe Zoofall/Jasper Rayburn units and I look back and wonder why.
They are by far the best made 3 pos. safety you could ever find for M98- machining, fit, finish was impeccable.
but to put something from an M70 on a .350 Rigby magnum Mauser is bastardisation in my mind.

Harry Selby some decades ago(80's) had D'Arcy Echols fit a 3pos. Zoofall/Rayburn to his .416 Rigby Mauser,
and it was subsequently removed and the original Mauser clunker refitted.

Images you see of Harrys .416 typically display the mauser shroud, but here is a rare photo with 3 pos. safety:
( note also the aftermarket trigger shoe) the rear charge slot hump has also been removed, I believe by the Paul Roberts
shop as part of the rifles original build process, but you can find other variants of Paul Roberts built stdM98 .416 rifles that
retained the rear bridge charge hump.

Non factual assertion removed.

Probably, but that cartridge really deserves a 250 gr projectile or heavier.

Maybe one reason it has never been very successful, at least in those days.

A small number of 350 N02 rimmed magazine rifles were produced, Rigby having has mauser make the special sloping box magazine, as indeed they did with the 303.
Examples are rare

Pondoro Taylor in African Rifles and Cartridges writes that .350 Magnum Rigby was introduced to chase the .375HH - 'owing to the incessant demand for higher velocity and flatter trajectory'. He spoke very highly of this cartridge with a 225 grain bullet - 'at ranges up to at least 150 yards kills just as instantaneously as the .375 Magnum'.

.350 Rigby, the 400/350, threw a 310 grain bullet. Taylor loved it - '(I) can truthfully state that I have never owned a more generally satisfactory medium bore.' He goes on to agree with the statement 'I found that the .350, besides being unrivalled for smaller game would do all that the .450 would do with the bigger.' Excepting very dense bush and the inexperienced man.

That new Rigby is a beautiful rifle for sure. I've always wanted a 350 Rigby Magnum, but never had the opportunity to buy one.
I've been lucky enough however to hunt for the last 18 years with a double chambered in 400-350 Rigby, shooting mainly 310 grain softs and solids.
The cartridge is indeed a very good killer.
The 350 Rigby Magnum is a really nice looking cartridge with plenty of powder capacity, and has a very good reputation as a hunting cartridge.
Well done Rigby for bringing the 350 Magnum back in a rifle styled very much like the originals.

Does anyone know the actual release date for the 350 Magnum cartridge?
I think some sources claim around 1908 which if correct, would put it earlier than the 375 H&H Magnum.

Taylor noted above says after 375HH but Hoyem gives 1908; and for the 400/350 (.350 Rigby no.2) 1899.

Perhaps Hoyem is better on dates than Taylor? I wouldnt know.

Rigby down loaded the 350 RM a fair bit. It can easily be loaded to match the 358Norma mag, and possibly a bit more safely.

Rule303 I think that the Norma has a fair 'power' ad over the older cracker.
But I wouldnt mind a rifle in that old cal at all, especially the six barrel take down i posted yesty.

It does as per old factory loads. I did say can be loaded to meet or beat and it can. It has the powder space to do this. Rigby held the loads back for the usual reasons, pressure with the old cordite loads when hot etc.
