Husqvarna M46B
      #278736 - 03/03/16 12:50 PM

After enjoying a couple of Husky 46's in 9.3x57, I finally found a 46B (6.5x55) with a good bore and stock.
This one has a Norma marked peep sight mounted on the rear bridge.
Now just have to wait until it arrives at my LGS.

Good job snagging that one! Simpsons has been getting in a lot of good items recently.

That's going to be a fun rifle. I hope it exceeds your expectations!

Simpsons is where I got it.
There have been several 146's lately but I have been too late to get one.
It kind of seems that someone has been taking all the good ones at one time.
I blame Daryl. I think he is having Tradex buy them up for him!

LOL - I've got nothing to do with how many of these Tradeex brings in, but they are still running 6 or more pages of them, with 40 on a page. Last year or so, there were 13 pages. Of course, they all aren't M96 Sporters, there are Husky 98's and some Husky 1600's as well - calibres run 6.5, 8mm, 9.3x57 and usually a few 9.3x62, both 96's and 98's.
The odd one isn't cracked in the tang, so immediate bedding is in order to avoid tang cracks.

Since I live an hour away from Tradex I was fortunate to examine and pick up two 146s a 1939 and 1940 9.3x57. I love the pre-war look of the short schnabel forend, the open grip and the barrel contour. Undrilled actions in VG condition with excellent bores. They are rust blued and the superiority of this finish is visible on a 76yr old rifle. The caliber is great and equals factory .35 Whelen loads of 2400fps with 250gr Hornadys.
After refinishing the oil soaked stocks with Tung oil I was so pleased that I picked up a 146 rechambered to 9.3x62, one of my favorite cartridges. This one drilled and tapped for top mounts but done properly. Since the quality price ratio is ridiculous and I am now single I bought a 1947 640 in 9.3x62. This one is a transitional FN action with the thumb cut and the clip hump but the swept back low bolt handle. The 640 has a beechwood stock, unlike the 146s which have walnut stocks, but with pleasant grain . My buddy found a 640 like mine but with the solid left receiver wall. I had to have one of these beautiful actions and found an 8x57S 1948 in great condition with a beautiful wood. The nicest beech I have seen so far. So in total I bought 5 for myself and 4 for my buddies. Talley crossbolts are on order.
I love Mauser actions and since Oberndorfs are not in my price range I concentrate on FNs. I own Browning Safaris in 7mm Rem, .300H&H,.308 Norma Magnum, .300Win Mag, .375 H&H and .458 Win Mag.All are pre 67,(pre salt wood),long extractor rifles that I consider the finest rifles ever sold over the counter.

Thanks to work, I keep missing all of the nice 9.3x62 and 6.5x55 models. I already have a 9.3x57, so the only way I would buy another is if it had a nice scope setup. Given their great value, I would be lying if I said I hadn't considered purchasing a second open sight Model 46.... I have a feeling these will trickle back out to the market in the next few months through Gunbroker and similar sites through unlicensed de-facto dealers (I may be a little bitter).

I would love to see pictures when you get the rifle in hand, and maybe even range results! Time to shoot (even reload) seems to escape me most of the time, so I have to live vicariously through others in the evenings, after the rush of the day has died down some.

BTW, Wanabebwana, that is a beautiful refinish.

Thanks. There is nothing wrong with the 9.3x57 especially handloaded. To install a scope they need to be drilled and tapped and the bolt handle has to be bent or replaced. A low swing safety or new trigger with side safety needs to be installed. I have several scoped hunting rifles so I keep these original and may shoot them once or twice just for kicks. My friend drilled and tapped his 640 in 9.3x62, installed two crossbolts and a 4x Leupold in QD Warne mounts. The bases are too high to use the iron sights so he will mill a channel down the center. Waiting for Beuhler type wing safety.
The blue is original on all my Huskys. The 146s have rust blue, the 640s have a black oxide finish. Being able to pick them in person is a big advantage because many have pitting, deep scratches and other imperfections that would require polishing and reblueing which is not cheap. Tony the owner is patient and lets me go through 5 or more to pick 1. These guns are well worth some sweat equity. Every year there are smaller numbers being imported from Sweden. They don't make them anymore and the FN98s rarely go back on the market when we get our hands on them.

Crazy as it may sound (and possibly be) given the price of the rifles, I think one of these Husqvarnas would be great with some Recknagel swing scope mounts. As is only logical, gun-logic, I would of course need to keep a pristine model as well. Wanabebwana, you're pushing me uncomfortably close to that edge with that rifle of yours.

You got that right!
For 95% of the large game hunting done on this planet, the 9.3x57 will do the job perfectly.
The iron sights on these rifles a very good. I have a M46 with a quick detatchable side mounted scope that, while nice, I seem to prefer to use the irons.
Just my opinion, but I have come to prefer hunting with the irons rather than a scope.

Deer and moose can't seem to tell the difference between the 9.3x57 and 9.3x62.
I like a rifle with open sights in heavy timber with shots up to 100yds or so. Will have to see if my aging eyes can handle it.
I do not own one but I prefer the 46B to the 46 because of the pistol grip cap and the Schnabel. Beautifully built rifles.

This is the rear sight on my M46 in 9.3x57. I simply filed it out a bit - and was spot-on with 270speers at 2,300fps. I used this sight and rifle to shoot a young bull moose at 200yards - it was a rather easy shot, resting my arms and rifle on the hood of my buddy's truck.
I left a bit of the original notch for the front bead to sit in. I no longer have this rifle - my Bro has it. IIRC- the 270's struck 1 1/2" high, at 50yards and still an inch high at 100.

Here is my Husqvarna 46B. This is how I received it today. All I did was to run a couple of patches through the bore. I will be taking it apart to clean out the dust and dried grease and to check the recoil lug fit in the stock and to make sure the mounting bolts are not going to cause the stock to split.

Made in 1942

Left side of the Norma peep sight.

right side of peep sight

Peep sight from the rear

The butt plate has 10 notches filed into it

NICE! - what appears to be an extended stock is probably the non-oxidized wood from under a slip-on recoil pad.
That peep sight is really quite the "fast acquisition" sight.

It is an extention, but tbe length of pull is identical to my other 46's. Maybe there was some damage and this is how it was corrected.
The peep sight is very fast to aquire!
I found 10 new Swedish stripper clips so carrying a reload or 2 is very convenient.

Yes - the strippers are really nice to have in-pocket when using irons. I have a few for my 6.5x55 as well.

Since I use 8x57 RP brass in the 9.3x57, easy to find (used to be) 7.62x51 (.308) strippers work just fine.

Very nice! That is quite the rugged looking peep sight. Thank you for sharing the rifle with us.

The 46B eluded me again today, with another batch uploaded, and sold almost immediately. There was a 46B with a nice looking claw-mount scope on Simpson's that sold today as well.

Well today after work I took the M46B out to the range just to try it out and see how well regulated the sights were.
To say I'm happy would be a very large understatement!
At 100 yards the first 2 shots were about 1 1/2" below point of aim, windage was perfect.
Made one full rotation of the rear peep and fired 3 more shots. These 3 were 1 1/2" above point of aim and dead center. They made a very tight 3/4" cloverleaf.
Now its time for some real load development.
More to come...

Nice one! I saw it at Simpson's while perusing for a 146 myself. I've got two M46 rifles one scoped, one not. So I don't need another 9.3 but...

Dies are on backorder in most places except the expensive brands. The expensive ones are not better than the Hornady IMHO.
Cheapest I've seen in stock was Outdoors 4 Less has the dies for $43.60 + S&H
Then there are some on eBay if you can go that route.

http://www.outdoors4less.net/hornady-series-iv-specialty-die-set-9-3x57-366-546410.html

I prefer the Hornady dies because of the very tapered expander ball that takes 8x57 to 9.3 in one step. I don't need a false shoulder on mine. Daryl_S has posted excellent instructions for that if your chamber turns out to be long.
The Hornady inline seating sleeve is a nice touch too.

I have no idea if Simspson's checks headspace. If they say it's a 9.3 x 57 it is. They do check the cartridge intended as some of the 9.3x57 rifles rechambered to 9.3x62 are listed as such.
It won't say headspace dimensions on the barrel. Manufacturers only list the cartridge or caliber.
In Husky's case they only marked 9.3x57 rifles with "9.3". A designation of x57 or x62 is a case length designator for a cartridge, not Headspace dimensions. We assume the rifle left the factory at CIP or SAMMI spec. However, there was no CIP or SAMMI spec for the 9.3x57 until last year.
The long chamber is pretty common in the 1920s thru 1930's M46 small rings.
You can use 8x57 gauges to see. If it closes on the 8x57 Field Gauge you have excessive headspace. But if it doesn't close on the Field Gauge you're good to go.
You need to read Daryl's write up on creating a false shoulder to fireform his 9.3x57 brass to his chamber After you do that you only neck size so you don't push the shoulder back again.

Don't loose sleep over it, just check it before you shoot. Billybob on the internet got his information about headspace from his cousin's girlfriend's grandpa's dog. Just check it with the 8x57 Field gauge and if it won't close, go shoot. If it closes on the Field gauge come back and let us know.

Just to see what would happen, I fired a mild 8x57 handload down a crappy bore M46. Case formed perfectly, even the neck!. The bullet was only about 6 inches off the bull at 50 yards. Don't try this at home kids etc etc. My attorney makes me state that 'cause we know someone is going to do it.

Well Iowa...I believe you just tipped the scales. I have been eyeing Simpson's Husky's in 9.3 X 57 for close to a year. I believe it is time to "pull the trigger" on one. I thoroughly enjoy my 9 X 57's so the 9.3 is just more of a good thing, right?

Sharps4590,
PM me and I will send you the #'s of a couple of real nice ones at Simpsons.
Just wondering if you're in Ozark county? My grandparents lived between Tecumseh and Gainesville on J Road.
Spent my summers there growing up. Lots of beautiful country in those parts.

No sir, I'm near Rolla, quite a ways from Gainesville. I've been through there but not for a long time, like decades. I looked at that Husky you sent me the link to. I guess I did miss it. It certainly has a better description than most others. Only thing is I wish it had a Schnabel fore end. Seems a phone call will be in order tomorrow.

Rifle is ordered and might be here yet this week. Iowa, thanks for the link to the dies, they're on the way too!

Well...Outdoors4less had the dies backordered however, I found a set at CH-4D which I much prefer over Hornady. They should be here next week. I believe I'll start necking up some -06 brass with my 9 X 57 die and trim fairly close. I'll be that much closer when the correct dies arrive...

My 9.3x57 cases made from '06 brass, would not allow a .367" bullet into a fired case, thus they needed to be neck turned. I ended up going with RP 8x57 brass as they did not need turning. Even the 9.3x57 PriviPartisan cases were thicker than the 8x57's. I preferred the necked straight, then necked down to a crush fit, 8x57's. I rather like my Hornady dies.
I will admit my .50/95 dies are CH and they seem good dies. The set of dies CH made for my buddy for his .376/06IMP were grossly undersized at the shoulder. I sent 3 empties and they ignored them, sending their Generic set of dies.

I have several sets of CH4D dies an am pleased with all but one set. I will say that I have talked to Dave several times and he has been very helpful. It is how ever very difficult to convince him he is wrong. That is the one set of dies that I wasn't pleased with.

The Prvi 8x57 cases are what I use to make my 9.3x57 cases.
The necks measure .010-.011" thick after being run through my Hornady sizing die.

Daryl, thank you for that piece of information. I have an outside neck turner and while I don't relish the thought I'm now aware it might need to be done. Foreknowledge helps with problem solving!! If so many friends didn't give me their expended 30-06 brass I probably wouldn't consider it. Since I'm not an -06 fan or user I use the brass for reforming into a few different cartridges.

Wayne, that's been my experience. To date what Dave has done for me has worked and worked well but no one is 100% correct 100% of the time.

Iowa, I will enter your experience into my notes. I don't believe one can have too much information.

I have a couple sets of Hornady dies and they work ok. The thing about them I don't like is the same thing several do like. I can't stand that sliding bullet seater. It appears to work fine but I just don't like it...go figger.

RCBS list dies in 9.3x57 as that is where we got mine from.

Was at the local gun show yesterday and there was a model 46 from a local pawn shop on a table stock and finsh a little rough. Maybe 70% drilled and tapped for a scopes no cracks but plenty of digs.9.3x57 but the bore ugh.how do you beat up the bore on such an obscure caliber.anyway 600$ I think if it were in the 4s I might have bit.might go look at it at there shop armed with more knowledge.

Husky 46's run $175.00 to about $320 max here in Canada, depending on condition.

The M98's (M246?) are usually $250.00 to $350.00. The odd one in 9.3x62 also shows up for $350.00 - $400.00 normally.

Too bad Tradeexcanada doesn't ship to the states.

I have Hornady dies in 9.3x57 - & I prefer them, in any caliber to RCBS.
