Mauser Model M in caliber .30-'06
      #278551 - 28/02/16 01:22 PM

Fellows,

Following are photos of my original Ooberndorf Model M Mauser sporting rifle with what may be a factory mounted Gerard scope. This would be a Mauser catalog item number 271as described in Jon Speed's book "Original Oberndorf Sporting Rifles" on page 158.

Jon describes the model M sporting rifles on pages 155 through 158. The model M is a Mannlicher style/stocked rifle.

Serial number places production of this rifle in the 1922/1923 time period.

This rifle was made for export to the US as indicated by the word "Germany" on the magazine floor plate and caliber. Caliber is 7.6S US 1906 or, as we know it, .30-'06. The S in 7.6S is for spitzer. As indicated previously the rifle is Mannlicher stocked. It has a checkered forearm and pistol grip. The hinged magazine floor plate release is a button in the trigger guard bow. Trigger is a double, set trigger. Bolt handle is a "spoon" type with serrations on the underside. Sights are one standing and two folding marked 100, 200 and 300. The front sight has a hood which is not shown in Speed's book. Butt plate is steel with the Mauser logo and a trap for cleaning rod storage. It came with a nice leather sling.

The numbers on the barrel under the wood, 7,6 . 7,85 . 250, indicate a 7.6MM (.299”) land diameter, a 7.85MM (.309”) with a twist rate of one turn in 250MM (9.842”). The 178, 28 is the bore size in gauge which equals .300 or .30 caliber.

I don't know what the magnification of the scope is. The only markings on it are Gerard with a K over the name. The optics are clear. Mounts are a quick release type but are not the typical claw mount. This is the information Alex Eichendorff provided me several years ago on the scope mount.
“By the way, the type of scope mount on your 30-06 M-Mauser is callled a " Berliner Montage" or "Reichswehrmontage" over here. In the 1920s it was used by the Reichswehr or 100 000 man army on sniper Kar98Bs for a time.
Waidmannsheil!
Axel Eichendorff aka kuduae”

I would rate the overall condition as VG.

Vlad

Very nice rifle indeed, I have always preferred the M type over the S type and yours is an excellent example. Interesting scope mounts as well and I notice the bolt release lever is finished a little nicer than the normal Mauser item. Fantastic rifle, I am very envious indeed.

Waidmannsheil.

This type of mount is going back on the "Gewehrfabrik Danzig" and was used to built up sniper rifles in WW1. So it is also known as " Danzig mount".
In 1919 the optical firm Görz (Goerz)Berlin was the holder of the austrian patent Nr. 86021 which shows an mount with the same front base.

The interesting point on this mount is the fact that the front base builts an pivot point for the side correction. So there is very little twisting in the scope as by other early scope mount types.

Probably tha magnifcation of the scope is 4x or similar as many of the scopes of that period.
I have a doubt the yellow ring on the scope tube is the magnification regulation?

Gerard was a little special- they made also 2.75x, 4.5x , 5.5x and so on. I think it is an 4.5x, still looking to find the "k" modell in my papers.
The "yellow" ring is for the "dioptrien" ( i dont know in english). Gerard made only fixed magnification scopes.

Itkid, chapmen, The "yellow ring" on top of the scope is the elevation adjustment. Windage setting is in the base.

Thank you all for your comments.

Here is an similar built voigtländer to make things clear:

3 is elavation adjustment
1 is windage setting
2 is "sharpness adjustment" (Dioptrienausgleich in german)

Vladymere, a 1920s Steigleder catalog listed the Gerard model K at 5 ¾ x magnification.

Chapman, the "Reichswehrmontage" as on Vladymere's rifle is completely different from the WW1"Danzig" as patented by Busch. I will look for photos of the Danzig one. On Vlad's "Reichswehr" or "Berliner" mount the front foot, cut out in a half circle shape, hooks under a corresponding half round dovetail on the front base. On the "Danzig" mount a circular disk under the front ring slipped into a shoe front base.

That "Danzig Mount" is a strange one. On the Gew98, Peter Senich nicknamed it in his books as the "semi-turret" for its partial resemblance to the WWII era "turret mounts".

With a circular foot on the front ring, you would expect it to pivot on that point with the windage at the rear, but in fact there is a fine screw adjustment in the front ring for windage, so it pivots on the rear "peg". The drawing above seems to show an alternate front ring and base with a tapered dovetail.

Probably it was an easier design to manufacture than the hand-fitted dovetails typical of the claw mount systems.

I once had such a Gew98 and a mismatching scope and they fitted together so they were probably set up in jigs, rather than individually fitted.

The Goerz 4x scopes used with these were a very fine glass.

Thats right, i used the wrong words for what i mean.

The Danzig mount was the first mount that uses as front base an radial shaped disk piece that give an pivot axis. The basic idea was to get away from the expensive and individual made claw mounts.
Basicly it was an german patent, submitted 1915. I have gone through the database of the german patent office, only found the austrian patent dated 1919. The patent text opens up different shapes of front bases and different types to lock the back base.

For my opinion it is just an production question to make the disk on the scope side ore as front mount. Also it is an possibility to get around the Goerz Patent.

I only know the Goerz patent, havent seen one from Busch.
