Mauser action weight reduction?

I was talking with my old man about my new Mauser junker project. He had a set of articles explaining cutting the sides and other areas on a 98 action for weight reduction. The process is not common anymore and I am having trouble finding any pics of it. Anybody have any?

If you can find photos of the G 33/40, they were machined for light weight. This should help some.

Yes it was done, maybe still is but the wght. reduction is negligible and really not worth the effort in MHO.
Besides removing a bit of metal on the receiver the bottom metal sides were punched full of holes.
Just some suggestions, find a small ring receiver, aluminum bottom metal / none, use a light contour barrel, pick a stock for its lightness, in other words choose components for their wght., Eg. a light barrel in a larger bore will be lighter.
Like Nitro suggested look at the 33/40, I suppose you save an oz.+/-? compared to say a Brno 21/22.

Yes I look at the 33/40. Some weight savings there. There are other cuts one could make to cut some of the weight without compromises in strength. Simply an idea at this point, better left for rainy days in the winter..

Just for a fun project, seeing how much you can take out of a Mauser. Why not?

Slim that trigger guard up too!

It seems to be one of those ideas where people go "why bother?". But it's something they used to do, so why not just to get a taste of the old ways?

You can take quite a bit of weight off and still be safe. But the lighter you go, the more difficult they are to shoot off-hand.

I have a 7 x 57 on large ring, standard length action that weighs 5# 7 oz. It has a shaved down 1909 steel trigger guard and a Leupold 4X Compact scope in skeletonized steel rings, with back-up steel open sights. It has a very trim 21" barrel and a minimal "toothpick" Old World walnut stock. The only aluminum parts on the rifle are the Timney trigger housing and the replacement alloy follower.

It is wonderful to carry, but difficult to hold steady.

One would probably be better off starting with a lighter weight action (Rem. M600-700), but I have little interest in bolt rifles that are not Mausers.

I have a Large Ring Mauser (1908 Brazilian) action I made a 25-06 on with a maple stock. Scoped and loaded with a sling on, it still only weighs 7 pound 3 OZ.

You can lighten up the action but the amount of steel you can get rid of only comes to about 3 OZ.

You are far better off sliming down a barrel and taking all unnecessary wood off the stock.

I haven't tuched this project in a while. Not sure what I am doing with it. I have a light weight 600 remington custom already so the mauser is just for fun.

My lightest M98 is on a shortened small ring action in .250 Sav.

Similar specs to the 7mm mentioned above, w/steel guard and scope mounts, but the .250 weighs 4# 14 oz.

Too light? Maybe...

But as Dumprat says, it was for fun, and I was interested to see how light I could get it.

I would like to add that after all the metal shaving etc., your biggest weight saving
can be in your choice of stock wood. Normally the denser the heavier and vice versa,
in any type you may choose. I "collect" mostly older commercial Mausers and I'm often
surprised by the difference in stock weight. JMHO --- John

BTW, that weight for my .250 Savage was with cartridges, it is 4 pounds 12 oz without.
