That's a nifty rear sight even if it's not adjustable for elevation.

Got these pics via email two weeks ago: Another such 10.75x68 rifle on a 03 Springfield action, recently auctioned in Sveden. Apparently built by the same Zella – Mehlis shop. Proofed September 1931 by the Z-M proofhouse. Maker’s serial number 24, while the one shown above is 25.

Thanks Axel. This one seems to have the standard rear sight instead of a peep.

2 very interesting 10.75x68's. I like how the darker heart wood on the Springfield actioned rifle's butt from comb to heel, almost match the angles of the darkened wrist checkering.

I guess the first rifle came from Sveden to the USA too, as that peep sight is a design often found on prewar Svedish rifles. Certainly both were intended for elk = moose hunting. During the interwar years, there were several German rifles built on unusual, former “WW1 enemy” bolt actions. F.i., I have seen 3 such rifles built on type 30 “hook safety” Jap. Arisaka actions. And there are many Austrian hunting rifles on Italian Mannlicher-Carcano and Rumanian Mannlicher actions, sometimes combined with Mauser type bottom metal. Such actions came from unusable military rifles, surrendered or battlefield pickups from WW1. Such actions were probably even cheaper than stripped ex-military Mauser actions.
Here the actions come from an early American M 1903 Springfield, most likely battlefield pick-ups from early 1918. As the .30-06 cartridge was unknown and unavailable in Europe, only the action was salvaged and scrubbed off all original US markings.
The actions were rebarreled with a round, ribbed barrel and restocked, most likely by a small Zella – Mehlis shop. It was proofed by the Zella – Mehlis proofhouse 9.31 = September 1931, gun number 254 proofed that month. 24 and 25 are most likely the serial numbers of the gunsmith. The rifle with a bore/land diameter of 10.1 mm and proofed for a service load with a steel jacketed 22.5 g = 347 gr bullet, it is certainly in 10.75x68, the only such cartridge widely availble in 1931. What’s unusual here: The CROWN + crown/N proofmarks show, it was proofed using the pre-WW1 “4000 atm proof powder”. The use of these proofs usually ended in he early 1920s. Maybe the Z-M proofhouse still had some leftover 10.75x68 proof cartridges in 1931?

BTW, those Svedish peep sights are adjustable for windage and elevation. The bottom part slides sideways in it's dovetail while the aperture is screwed into the slide. So the peep is adjustable for elevation in half turn steps. Both parts are locked by tiny set screws. I have such a sight on a B-type Mauser in 9.3x62.

Could it be 10,75x57 ? They called it "potato thrower". I have seen quite many this caliber rifle only in Sweden. All of them were Mauser 98's.

Quite unlikely. By 1931 the 10.75x57 was almost dead. It was essentially a pre-WW1 number. Rifle #24 was described as a x68, while #25 was shot with old RWS 10.75x68 loads.

Thanks for this information. So it's similar in operation to the NECG peep sight. I could see it was adjustable for windage but, couldn't see the elevation mechanism and assumed the front sight was for elevation.

not your common hunting rifle, a turkish 1887 mauser in 9,5x60R, very rare and maybe captured by an italian in the italo - turkish war of 1911 in lybia

https://www.czernys.com/asta-129/?o=103351

a hard to find mauser rifle because the turks cancel this model when they see the 1889 belgisch mauser rifle and ask for this

in Mausers eye the 9,5x60R was the peak of blackpowder cartridges, the maximum you get out of the black stuff

Any Aussies seen the 7x57 on used guns? As usual there’s the frustrating lack of photos and info, but to me it’s clearly been restocked? Quite a bit of money for a non-original rifle…

You’re both right about the price, but it’s Australia so you need to at least double your North American prices. However, $4k+ is too far. Yes the photo is crap, but the figure looks too fancy to me and the shape of the schnabel doesn’t look pronounced enough - or did stock design vary that much on Type Bs in the late ‘30s?

I uploaded the picture to my desk-top, than enlarged it as big as I could, using the Ctrl and + keys. There is no schnabble that I can see. It has a rounded-up forend tip.

I did the same. Sorry DarylS, but apparently you have not seen many original Mauser, Oberndorf type B rifles. They did not have a pronounced “Schnabel” foreend. There is just a very slight flare at the tip. The tips are cut off with a curved cut, straight in plan but curved up-down. Looking at the enlarged photo as you did, I see a typical post-1912 to 1945 Mauser B stock with the uncheckered foreend and the rounded, seen from the side, tip. Here are pics of four B Mausers, all with their original factory stocks.

Nice looking rifles. I particularly like the last two. The next to last looks like a 9.3 or 10.75?

The B can be as attractive as the A, depending on the particular rifle.
