CZ550 6.5x55-to-9.3x62 ChopJob End Results.
      #186754 - 28/07/11 11:30 PM

OK, I think I have it squared away now.

One of those personalized things. I like it but some might not. That's certainly OK, but here's the story if you care to see the {final?} update.

Sum;

Started as a CZ550 6.5x55, but didn't CRF. Rebarreled with a take-off CZ 9.3x62 barrel chopped to 19 inches by CZ. I did a bunch of stock work.

Then I designed a double sling adapter to fit all standard QD studs, and the side mounts became superflous, and...the rifle balance seemed lakcing somehow.

So, back to the shop and the saws and rasps.

I patched the superflous hole, added a single side QD stud, replaced the Euro studs with US-type, reshaped the forestock to a Schnabel and made a slight betterment of the butt to again to closely fit my face. Takes all recoil away from the chin. Works well. Then two coats of red oak stain and 13 coats of Formby's Tung Oil.

With doublesling attached;

Side view;

Final. Very lively handling now, considerably better than the last iteration of my chop and salsh, and light years better than the clubbiness of the original FS stock configuration.

I think I got it.

Best of all, using the RL15 load of 58 grains under the Prvi 285 grain bullet, I get a chrono'd 2179 fps which Daryl will immediately seize on as identical to the original 9.3x62 factory specs of 2175 and bettering by just a little {50 fps} speeds I attain in my 24-inch HVA 146 9.3x57.

Freezer's getting low on bear meat. Gotta fix that in a couple months. Will work on making some semi-frangible 285's for close up dog work. The 285's have killed a number of bear for me in 9.3x57 and x62 but I've been wanting a super-fast-opening bullet and some experimentation with grinding wheel and hollowpointer might be in order...

A couple of the old threads here;

Nice J-chop:LOL

Regarding hunting in Idaho and there abouts, a good winchester in .35 or .405WCF would really do great I see. Perhaps a Win in .348WCF too would do it. Its not difficult to see why Elmer Keith loved the leveraction or doublerifle for these areas.

Thanks for sharing.

My M46 in 9.3x57 with factory 23.4" bl. makes 2,175fps with re-sized 300gr. Hornady's and 285 Privi's, Rod.

I just chrono'd the 293gr. TUG's same load at only 2,125fps - slow, for some reason, but usually run 1/2" 3 shot, 100meter groups.

2,175fps should work fine - John Taylor thought so for dangerous African game, softs and solids.

Cup-pointing should work well, I'm sure. Remember what the cupped 300gr. did in your media.

I wonder what a hollow pointed 225gr. or 235gr. cupped, would do?

The last rasping and shaping of this rifle really changed the handling a lot. I didn't weight it before/after and I don't think I actually lost that much weight even after sawing off and thinning the forestock but the handling changed dramatically, for the better. This thing is a peach.

Yes, rigby, those calibers you mention would, did and in the hands of a few, still do work well. I used a .348 for some years with good results on deer and bear.

But things have changed here now a lot and we are shooting the fast ones a lot more. My whole county has been logged heavily, with clearcuts everywher, so until the replanted tree seedlings get gup ten feet or more or so, the flat shooters will have more and more utility.

Also, our elk populations are declining so I see we will be more and more varmint shooters, and trappers, in the future. Bear and lion are in good shape, and coyotes and wolves now are everywhere, tho very, very hard to find and kill. Very sad for our hunting heritage.

I have my .264 and .270, the former set up with 140 grain bullet @ 3000 fps and the latter set up with 100 gr bullet at 3550 fps.

This year we have a wolf hunting and trapping season but no one {including the wolf biologists} except the Fish and Game Department {which lives in a dream world} believes wolves will be rduced by this effort.

Daryl; Yes, the modern 9.3x57 IS the Former 9.3x62. I'm very curious to see about a fast light bullet in this gun, too.

And the TUG's...I wish I could get them reasonably priced. Great bullets!

A 200gr. to 210gr. TSX might be fun, if it was available. There or was a 210gr. in .375cal.

Trouble with the TSX's is the reduced B.C. compared to the non-grooved slugs. A tossup, really, as the TSX's shoot so well in most rifles, whereas the others were a hit and miss quandry. Some liked them, many didn't.

The 225 gr. is it for light weight pointy, for now. 9.3x62 should make 2,700fps to 2,750fps in the short barrel - max load.

BC of .320 mv of 2,700fps = +3" @ 100, 0 at 230yds. -6.8 @ 300. minus 14.3@ 350 and minus 24 1/2" at 400. A + 3.5" or 4" height might be better for 100 yards.
