FN-Browning Mauser Actioned Rifles

Gentlemen,

I would like to know about the FN-Browning's Mauser actioned rifles.How many models were there and in what calibres?Any info and photographs you can share are appreciated. I read only good things about them.Thank you in advance.

From memory I believe they came in Safari - plain, Medallion - engraved, Olympian - highly engraved, the stocks were of better quality wood (figure) as one went up the grades along with more extensive and ornate checkering. All had a step in the barrel just ahead of the chambre, about the only thing I couldn't get used to. Some but very few were made on the small instead of large ring Mauser - a good catch if you can find one. FWIW --- John303.

.243 TO .458 Winchester I believe.
I had a Safari in .243, and a Safari in .375.
Now have a .338 Medallion that I was told was rebarreled from a .458.
Very fine rifles.
Never have seen any in less than .243 or bigger than .458.

Thank you, gents. I once came across an FN-Browning .30/06 and the price was a steal. I still kick myself for not having bought it.Ever since, I keep looking for one and none has turned up so far.In the UK that is.

I wonder why Browning stopped offering these excellent rifles.

Mfg. costs v. sales v. profit, once the profit goes below X production is over. To me they were always a little pricey, there were always much cheaper guns to to had. For example I paid $85.00 for a SR-FN Supreme action only - in about 72 (you can see the resulting rifle under Mauser Pics. on this site). You could puchase a Mauser actioned rifle at the time for aboout $100.00?, action only maybe $25.00. About 10-15 years later the asking price for action alone was $350.00. But I ramble, you get the picture. John303.

Thank you,John, for your reply. I shall check out your pictures.If one were to go for a FN-Mauser actioned rifle,what kind of price is one looking at?How much would an FN-Muser action cost? Or are there equally good actions to be had? I ask because I read that FN actions were probably the finest Mauser actions. Sorry for asking too many questions and I appreciate your replies.

VR; There are several variants of the FN Mauser action including a single shot - these were basically an inproved "metal wise" military 98s, all had a swept back bolt handle and predrilled for scope mts. The FN Supreme 400 had several changes, eg. bolt shroud - plain, ejector/bolt release - spring type, bottom metal - aluminum with a hinged floorplate, sidesafety - on the trigger. There is a very good write up in "Bolt Action Rifles" by F. de Haas. IMHO any FN is "one" of the top Mauser type actions available. Price - just checked out the Epps site, Safari, .30-06, $1099.00 and a .458 at $1175.00 Cdn. supposedly in VG condition, will give you some idea. This is strictly a guess on my part but I would think you need to add $500.00 for a Medallion and likely a $1000.00 for an ?Olympian. Take care --- John303.

They also did something foolish putting salt cured stocks on some that caused severe rusting in the barrel channel and was hard to find until the damage was done.I have a nice Safari in .308 NM in a synthetic stock as the wood stock was busted when I aquired it.........great shooter....Harold

I believe the Safari rifles were also offered in .222 Remington and .222 Remington magnum at one time. However the smaller calibers (up through .308 Win) were built on Sako, not FN, actions if I'm not mistaken.

As a collector of Mauser Rifles for over 45 yrs I have owned many FN Brownings.
I presently own a .222Rem Mag Medallion and Safaris in 7mm Mag,.300 Win Mag. .375 H&H Mag and .458 Win Mag.
Browning Hi-Power rifles were made from 1959-1974 in Belgium.
They came in Safari, Medallion and Olympian grade.
The calibers available were .222 Rem,.222Rem Mag, built on Sako Vixen action and marked made in Finland. The early .243 Win, 284 Win and .308 Win were made on small ring FN Mauser actions.
Later, they were assembled with Sako Forester actions and the .22/250 Rem was added .The standard calibers .270Win, .30-06, and a few .257 Roberts were made on Standard FN Supreme actions. The magnums were: .264 Win Mag, 7mm Rem Mag, .300 Win Mag, .300 H&H Mag, .308 Norma Mag .338 Win Mag, .375 H&H Mag, and .458 Win Mag.In 1967 a "New Magnum" was introduced no doubt to curb manufacturing costs.The magnum calibers were made on a push feed action that had a Sako type extractor (.270 and .30-06 kept the Mauser claw extractor). The front of the bolt with the locking lugs are attached to the main bolt body and you can see a visible line where they join.
At this time several metric calibers were added but few made it to North America.
Also around 1965 Morton salt convinced American stock makers that wood blanks could be cured more quickly and at a much lower cost by packing them in salt rather than drying them in a kiln.
Rather than drawing the water out of the wood the salt dissolved to form a brine which penetrated the wood.The salt cured stocks resulted in rust and pitting damage to the metal in contact with the wood, mostly below the stock line. The majority of stocks during 1967-1971 were affected to varying degrees.
The higher the grade of wood the more likely it was "salt wood". Silver Nitrate can be used to test the wood.
Pre 1967 are recommended and command higher prices.
