Mauser M03 barrels and accessories?
      #170997 - 06/11/10 12:04 AM

As some may have guessed I have bought a Mauser M03.

The model is the extreme, with the "solid" .30-06 barrel. While the barrel is too heavy a profile, this configuration allows me to fit a big bore barrel to it.

I am interested in sourcing barrels and accessories for:

1x "African Barrel" in .404 Rimless - 650mm - with wide V rear site.
+ magazine (if the 8x68S one is different?)
+ bolt head MX

1x "Standard Barrel" in 8x68S - 650mm.
+ magazine "E"
+ bolt head MA

1x "Standard Barrel" in 6.5x65 RWS - 600mm.
(I assume the .30-06 magazine and bolt head "ST" will be the same?)

2x Mauser QD mount with 30 mm rings.

The extreme model has a 'plastic' stock. I will see if I can have a custom wooden stock made as an alternative stock option in the future.

What I am looking for is where to find barrels and accessories at the best prices anywhere in the world.

Obviously will need to make sure can get it from the jurisdiction, but there can be considerable differences in pricing.

Looking for info. Thanks.

Would a 6.5x65 barrel be best in 600 mm or 650 mm?

650mm without doubt. If 6,5x65 is becoming too much of a problem 270win will be a better choice.

Pictures off the web.

It doesn't look that difficult to add a custom walnut stock too.

Any comments?

The M03 magazine for the .404 will work with the 8x68

The ST bolt-head will work for both the .30-06 and the 6.5x65

65 cm barrel for the 6.5x65 would be special order. Not necessary if you reload, stick to the 60 cm.

M03s are barrel-heavy to begin with, and the 6.5x65 with a 60 cm barrel is quite a practical setup, good handling and not too long for a blind where longer barrels are a nuisance. I shoot Berger Bullets with a Norma MRP-2 charge out of my 6.5x65 M03 with a 60 cm barrel, get hole in hole accuracy and speeds exceeding a 6.5x68 at safe pressure levels. You only need the 65 cm barrel if you use factory ammo (...there is only one factory load,by the way).

By the way: The 6.5x65 is EXTREMELY prone to generate a doughnut at the inside of the shoulder/neck junction. So much so, that one German reloading manual advises against using anything but fresh brass. Before you start thinking about reaming the inside of your neck to remove the doughnut (which is necessary every time and screws with your accuracy) I'll give you a tip how to avoid that issue altogether. Take a neck-turner, adjust it to not take off anything from the neck itself, but grind into the shoulder by about 7/1000 of an inch. Your brass will look a bit funny, but it will not have an impact on accuracy or otherwise (just dont cut into the shoulder by too much). When you fire a round, the brass that normally forms the doughnut flows into the area of the shoulder which you had cut into, and your case will look normal again (and not suffer from the doughnut effect). You only need to do this once, - with this method, a doughnut will never form.

John,
Congrats on your purchase it was a nice package. Thanks for posting those pics of the bare action. You can cleary see why they are so hefty. They definetly utilse a lot of superbly machined steel in the action. Makes the Blaser look like a toy.

An MO3 will definetly be on the cards for me in the future. I started saving up for one and 6 months later I have 3 new rifles which by the time I set them up would have cost about the same.

Instead of a custom wooden stock, why not just buy a new one from Mauser. When I was pricing eveything up the option of an aditional stock was possible, but I never got a price. In my case I was toying with the idea of purchasing the MO3 "standard" and then getting an additional synthetic stock. Apparently, I was told that (or read somewhere) that the rifles that have wooden stocks are numbered to the action.

George

George

I contacted the Mauser factory before buying and one of the questions and answers was a wooden stock by itself was not purchasable, the most basic unit was an action and stock.

Maybe the local dealer says differently?

A nice custom stock designed to fit is a nice option though. On a Mauser 98 certainly, why not on a M03 as well.

404bearslayer

Thanks for the information. The 6.5x65 sounds like it has as many issues as the 68 mm!

I'm thinking of using this stock blank for the M03.

Originally introduced on these forums as an idea for a "Tiger Rifle" project. A Mauser 98 in a classic calibre used in India for tiger. My preferences were always either .318 WR or .333 Jeffery. The "Tiger" idea was merely due to the "stripes" on the walnut.

Now both cartridges are very similar to the 8x68S though not as romantically classic by any means. Nor does the utilitarian M03 the appeal of a classic M98.

However less money spent on less rifles, means I have more to spend on actually hunting with them!

And a .404 Jeffery is definitely classic still, though I have never read of it being used in India, though probably some were.

From this thread originally - "Tiger" M98 rifle

Or I might buy a new blank for the M03!

So what would Mauser do if a stock was broken in two? Perhaps your local dealer could report such an "accident", and request Mauser to send him a stock with no action to repair the "damaged" one?

Nitrox: Yes, the 6.5x65 has issues besides the ones mentioned. According to the DEVA manual, it is prone to secondary detonations with slow powders and low load densities. It does however have a fast twist, unlike the 6.5x68, so you can shoot heavy bullets. It is unproblematic if you load it hot, especially with compressed loads, for which it is well suited (... but you do have to do the additional case prep step to avoid the doughnut issue, which is a bit of a hassle). Extremely accurate, however, with Lapua Scenar and Berger Match bullets. The first two shots out of cold barrel do literally hit the same hole, you can shoot flies with that caliber.

Ah, ribbing time - again To ease the pain I have decided to make the choices for you
1. 404 Jeffery, 600mm barrel
2. 8x68S, 650mm barrel
3. 3006, 600mm barrel
4. 6,5x55, 6,5x57 or 270win, 600mm barrel.
No onkel Hermann 9,3x70 DWM this time since it requires a mauser 98 magnum mauser with all bells and whistles
Cheers

Good point!

Probably replace the synthetic one.

Probably would load it fairly hot then. That is what it is for after all.

The barrels on these things are damned expensive.

NitroX,
By the looks of things you apparently like the rifle! I apologize I have nothing to offer in the way of information and find myself in the same proverbial boat in regards to additional barrels and the like. What are you impressions of the Mauser M03 thus far? I have yet to find fault in mine depite my original misgivings for purchasing a push feed action.

Best Regards

No idea. Haven't seen it yet. We have to wait for a permit to acquire to be approved in our country.

I would also be interested which dealer you have purchased from. In Melbourne we only have Mialls which does not suit me at all. What other dealers in Australia carry the Mauser brand ?
If Mialls are the only ones then I will buy from the US

Empire 378

Mialls are the only agents for the M03 in Aus. There is a sub dealer in Qld - The Open Range - but they source all their Blaser & Mauser stuff from Mialls.
