Hello ,ive been interested in getting one of these, John how do you find the action ? nice and smooth ? you said the barrels are damned expensive ?? how expensive is that ?

You should have a location specified in your profile. State of Australia would be fine.

Mialls probably can give you a quotation as to the prices for the barrels you are interested in. But some could buy a whole new rifle. Pretty standard for the German multi barrel rifle brands though. Nothing is cheap on Sauers, Mausers or Blasers.

Send to me a PM saying what you are interested in and I will try to reply.

The action is smooth enough. Overall I like the rifle, except it is too heavy. Hopefully some of the additional barrels not being "solid" or heavy barrels will feel better.

FINALLY, the barrels have arrived. On my birthday no less!

A barrel in .222, one in 6.5x65 RWS, a barrel which may become my new ONE WORLD medium hunting calibre, the 8x68S, and finally something with authority, the .404 Jeffery Rimless.

Have got a variety of stuff for the calibres already, some dies, brass and bullets, but for some of the above still need to fill some gaps before shooting commences.

The .222 is no problem whatsoever. The .404 I think is covered to some extent. I think dies for the 8x68S and 6.5x65 are still needed. Need to do a stocktake!

A problem with so many new ones at the moment.

Nice!.

The 30-06 is a good caliber but a boring caliber. If I were to have a Mauser M03 one day I would either take the 270wea/375H&H combo or the 6,5x68/8x68/10,75x73.

Unfortunately no 6.5x68 in the M03.

I would have a 6.5x68 barrel instead the 65mm one if that was not the case.

Also the barrel is too short to bother re-chambering, even if the twist rate was acceptable for a 68mm case.

The '06 barrel should go - like you said, boring.

The 65mm 6.5 sounds fine to me, pretty much same ballistics as the 68 - once you make 60gr. capacity they're quite similar when loaded to the same pressure (even when some run over 80gr.)the tend to be easily within 100fps of the smaller case.
The 8x68 and .404 sounds terrific.

I have a .30-06 already and this barrel is a "solid" version ie a heavy barrel.

It isn't boring, I just don't have a need for it, and more of a need for the $$$ instead.

Pleased to say the first test of the Mauser M03 has gone well.

Not liking Father Christmas I wanted to slay his reindeers before Christmas to prevent him molesting the Earth yet again, unfortunately I only got them AFTER Christmas ...

In reality been doing a bit of canned venison hunting. Six of my fallow were out and about outside the wire, and needed to be shot. Got five of them over a couple days and nights.

The .222 barrel with a Zeiss Conquest 3.5-10x scope managed five out of five brain shots at a variety of ranges. Just using Remington factory ammo in 50 gr SP.

Good start for the new rifle.

Ah Erik, but I would prefer an action and the stock fittings, not the stock itself.

Really some of these gunmakers need to realise the reason their product never becomes really popular is they don't allow customisation. A reason the M98 became great was the many gunmakers allowed to "adopt" it and make fine guns from it.

I would love a second action and stock fittings for my rifle's barrels. Then I could have two interchangeable rifles at any time. A nice custom walnut stocked one. And a plastic stocked one for more extreme conditions. Or both together in two calibres/cartridges for a two rifle hunt.

I have a "solid" (ie heavy) barrel in .30-06 for my Mauser M03.

Originally I was planning to sell it. Still might.

Q1. Recently was thinking could a M03 barrel be re-bored and/or re-chambered?

That is the first question for gunsmiths or other knowledgeable members.

Is there any issues with reboring an existing barrel such as the M03 has? I can post photos if need be.

Q2. What cartridge and bore?

Point 1. The barrel is a heavy version which means lots of meat. So thick so should not be many problems with a bigger bore size.

Point 2. This means smaller calibres may mean the barrel is still un-necessarily heavily, IMO.

Point 3. The Mauser M03 has different removable bolt heads in the bolt heads for the families of cartridges of: .222; .30-06; magnum and 8x68S; .404 etc. Have to check if any others.

Point 4. Similar for magazines.

So it possible a wide range of options are possible.

Point 5. Have to re-look at the barrel. Don't think it has open sights? Will have to check. Checked on the photo above, yes it has the standard crappy Mauser open sights.

Point 6. Will have to measure the barrel thickness and length.

First I was thinking of the .318 Westley Richards in .330. No problem I think with using the .30-06 magazine or bolt head. My "Tiger" rifle project is on hold due to funds being short at the moment. A .318 would be cool for BGRC shoots as a minimum calibre for some comps. But maybe the barrel would still be annoyingly heavy for hunting.

Secondly I would love a 9.3x62. It would also be milder for such BGRC shoots where I use a .375 H&H currently. Would the rifle still be too heavy? I don't want a heavy rifle in this calibre.

Thirdly the heavy barrel got me thinking. I already have a .404 barrel and 8x68S barrel. Could something like a big bore version of the x68S be possible? A 10.5x68 perhaps?

Fourthly, I wonder if something in a .500 or similar is possible on the rifle and one of the bolt heads? I prefer not getting into magnum rims, but maybe?

If a .500 or similar was possible that would be truly cool.

Have a brainstorm and look at the specific questions, specific points and tell me what you think or know. Thanks.

You might want to provide the muzzle diameter of the 30/06 barrel, as that will be the limiting factor of how large a calibre you can bore it out to. You need a barrel wall thickness of around .125, so subtract 0.25 from your muzzle diameter to give you an idea of what the largest diameter you might be able to have it bored out to.

From a practical perspective I dont think you will find anyone interested in re-boring barrels in Oz. Sprinter in SA used to re-bore barrels and you would need to check whether they still do. I had a light profile 30/06 barrel bored out to 338 many years ago and accuracy was so so. The best it would do was around 2" at 100 yards.

Personally, I think you would be better off selling the barrel and buying another factory barrel if you think you need another.

I think the system of M03 is quite ingenious. How is the custom stock doing @NitroX, any opdates ?

No progress whatsoever but believe I mentioned I have a stock blank on hand for it ... need a donor action for it first, ie the plan was to have two M03's to put the barrels on, one plastic "Extreme" and one traditional walnut, perhaps styled similarly ... nothing will happen unless I have a donor action and parts ... not likely for the forseeable future.

BUT I sold the .30-06 barrel to a member wanting a barrel before the lengthy time it takes to get one from Germany, six months or so.

I had some interest in acquiring a 9.3x62 barrel for my rifle. Either in a standard configuration, or the "African" configuration??? The standard barrels have crappy (IMO) rear sights with a small notch to aim with. The African barrels are heavier but also have a wide V rear sight. Plus a banded muzzle. The other "small" issue is the African barrels are close to twice the price and not cheap by any standard ...

I think in a 9.3 mm a good set of open sights would be an advantage. Even giving consideration that a scope would usually be used. The added price would hurt ...

The second point or question, is if spending that much, why not a .375 H&H barrel instead of a 9.3x62??? Everything the 9.3 can do can be done better with a .375 ... and more. A bit more recoil.

I already have a .375 H&H in a Whitworth M98 so do I want another one? Perhaps a 9.3x62 would be cool.

Decisions, decisions ...

Perhaps some comments would help.

(bear in mind, I may just keep the $$$ instead so don't expect my procrastination to finish quickly ....

BTW got the M03 out this afternoon just before dark to test shoot it at home. I need the .222 barrel and scope to head shoot some deer early tomorrow morning. My Cambodian grape pickers have asked for some fallow deer for some Easter holiday venison feasting.

Just shot at some orange clay targets from the back verandah tonight and it was shooting maybe an inch left and down so can compensate a bit. So changing the barrel and scope more than a couple times since I last used the .222 hasn't reslted in much of a change in target impact. I do prefer my .222 to be absolutely spot on though. Four fallow spikers or does to shoot tomorrow morning.

Bopped off six fallows this morning in the paddock with the .222 barrel and M03 with headshots. Lots of venison on Cambodian BBQ's this Easter !

Not 100% happy with the shooting. Missed outright two headshots, and wounded one deer, shot again quickly through the brain. Normally I have a close to perfect single shot brain shot record. Need to 100% perfect that zero and shoot some bunnies with it for some more practice. But deer do move their heads around a lot.

BUT the next task is to do some .404 Jeffery practice and some new load development. Plus the 8x68S. To get it ready for a BGRC shoot and also an NT trip.
