TM,
Thanks for the Trueflight link, however nothing is easy with this plan of mine.

They claim to make barrels with the ZKK profile, but Trueflight use 416R steel which is a stainless, so bluing is out of the question. Although I've never done it I think you could still silver solder the front sight, sling swivel etc to stainless, ie stainless to carbon steel.

Ultimately, I think I could live with a barrel with some sort of bake on black finish on this rifle.

The main problem is they don't do .35 cal but they do a .338cal. I suppose .338Fed is close enough to a .358Win.

I might still drop them an email and see what they say.

Does anyone know a good gunsmith in Australia who could handle this?

Regards

George

George

Bob DeVries at Kudu Services in Montrose, Victoria does a lot of Brno ZKK work.
I know he has machined up at least one correct profile ZKK barrel with integral bosses, but his work, while very good, certainly ain't cheap

Also Alex Beer (member of this forum) in Tasmania seems to like the ZKK, and has made a few custom rifles on the action... perhaps drop him a PM.

I had a Maddco stainless barrel fitted to my fathers 338 win mag.
I had it hot blued and you wouldnt know it wasnt a chrome moly barrel.

OK, finally made a descion but I seem to have caused myself "small" problem.

After speaking to a few local gunsmiths about a barrel with the same profile, I decided the project would end up costing me too much and propably disappointing me with the overall outcome.

So I went with my original plan of turning this rifle into a high quality .358 Win "scout" rifle.

For me to be happy, I wanted the barrel to have integral scope mount pedestals machined for Talley mounts. Once again, everyone I spoke to gave me the impression that it was going to cost 2-3 times that of a new "sightless" barrel job.

So I decided to contact Danny Pederson in Arizona as he used to to this thing all the time. He knew exactly what I wanted and it would cost around $US500, which I feel is a very good price. (barrel is not threaded or chambered)

All was good for a few days and then I realised that the US has gone a bit funny with export restrictions.

So has anybody got any advice on how I can easily get this shipped to Australia. Danny has indicated that he does not have an export permit. Other companies obviously do. Does it even qualify as a barrel as its not chambered?

Hopefully someone have some advice for me as I really want this barrel.

George

It is my understanding that orders over $100 now need an export permit. That's what is says on Gunparts site now anyway. Now Mr pederson can apply to the ATF or whomever deals with the permits and procviding that Austalia is not on their barred list there is no reason why it would not be issued. Of course you would have to cover the cost of the permit.

I doubt this has anythign to do with preventign terroriam but is just another way to gather more tax income for Obama and his cohorts.

Question is, is it a "Barrel" in AS. If not, get him to put it in USPS marked up as "Sample 4140 Steel tube" and do not use his real name or address when he posts it. If it get stopped there, then there is no comeback to him. And if in AS as in England Rifled steel tube is not a restricted item it will be delivered to you.

The US barrel is no longer a problem.

Thanks to Tophet1's advice, I decided to contact AFRO408 today and I had a very productive discussion with him.

Plan is to silver solder a slimmed down "quarter rib" with integral grooves for Talley mounts.

Anyway, as they say, watch this space.

Regards

George

I just bought a ZKK 601 in .243 Winchester, with plans to have it rebored and rechambered to .260 Remington. I have another coming from Germany in .308 which I plan to rebarrel in .250 Savage.

Has anyone been in contact with Delta Gun Shop/Clearwater Reboring since Jim Dubell's death to determine if the business will continue without him?

Now I need to find someone who will make copies of my original Oberndorf Kurz stock and inlet them for the 601.
