As requested by Armbar in the double rifles forum, here are a few photos of some Rigby bolt rifles I have. Apologies for the image quality, which isn't the best. I also added a photo of a GH rifle in .416 Rigby.

The first two photos are a .416 prewar, second two a .350 prewar, third two a .275. The last photo is a GH .416 on a Brevex action built in 1982. (I thought the photo labels would show but they don't).

The prewar Rigbys are a delight to look at, even when haveing seen these types before, I can never be tired to look at those ol`Rigbys. Classic lines..
I have a strong suspicion the folks from Rigbys London will strive in the direction too

Love the 416. What is the Rigby serial#. Does it have a street address on the barrel?

The Rigby 416 is the business for sure.
I see the .350 has the extended top tang I was asking about a while back. Super cool!

Don - the .416 is serial number 4667 and it has the 43 Sackville St. barrel address in block letters, not the (later?) Gothic script.

Lovely rifles, thank you for sharing. Love the lighter English stocks.

Just one question re the Rigby 416, is that extractor original? Haven't seen a magnum action with what appears to be a standard lenth extractor before.

Chris - good question and I don't know the answer. I had not even noticed this before. The rifle feeds and extracts the .416 cartridges just fine, but that doesn't really answer the question. I will take a look at the rifle when I get back to the US and see what I can find out.

Hey Gentlemen

Tell me something

I was told once by a gunsmith that it's NOT desireable or prefered to cut the the action back or open it up to expose the rear of the extractor claw, because it "can" get caught up.

Now if you look at the bolt in the first 2 416 Rigby photos there is nearly 1/2 an inch of the extractor claw infront of the rear action bridge, the bridge was no doubt cut back this far to allow for case extraction.

The next 2 photos of the 350 Rigby show the rear of extractor claw protected by the rear action bridge........notice you can't see the rear of extractor

So is this a good thing or a bad thing ?

S&F, if it is good enough for the David Miller Co SCI Elephant Rifle ('09 opened up for 458 Win Mag) then I guess it is good enough. Personally I prefer a magnum length extractor to avoid the gap.

Very nice. For some reason I really like the 350 and 275. Just looking at the stocks you can tell what ones were designed to work with open sights and which one with scopes.

Are you saying that the rear bridge on the 416 is altered??, or have I misunderstood you. I think Chris is right, it has simply had an extrator replacement of the standard variety. I am sure the two digit number wll not match the rest of the action parts...could be wrong.

I also think it's probably an extractor replacement, but I'm out of the country at the moment and not able to check it. I will check the numbers when I'm back and post a note. The rifle feeds and extracts cartridges very smoothly like it is so I probably won't do anything about it, but I'm not crazy about the appearance of the standard length extractor myself.

S&F. I think my previous reply might have confused some. The action is undoubtably a magnum mauser. At some stage the extractor has been replaced for some reason (broke, damaged). The stripper clips and rear bridge are original unaltered magnum mauser. Note the postion of the thumb cutout.

Compare with a lengthened standard mauser (I have some photos somewhere, but pleanty abound) and the difference is immediately obvious.

Magnum length extractors are available, I think even Midway lists them.
