My "new" Husqvarna Model 46 in 9.3x57 Mauser
      #111461 - 10/08/08 03:12 PM

A few months ago, I purchased a Husqvarna Model 46 in 9.3x57 Mauser from Allan's Armory. According to Allan's web site, it was made in 1930. My gunsmith refurbished and customized the rifle and the work is now complete. I thought some here might enjoy seeing some photos of the rifle.

Below are two photos of the rifle as received from Allan's Armory and before any work was begun on the rifle. (The photos are from Allan's web site.)

Below are photos of the finished rifle. The stock was stripped of its finish, dents were raised, oil damaged wood was repaired, and the stock received a new hand-rubbed oil finish. The rifle was converted to cock on opening with a Dayton Traister speed lock kit which includes a Mark II trigger, custom striker spring, and cocking piece. A Precise Metalsmithing (Wisner) two-position safety was installed. The action was glass bedded.

Some info about the 9.3x57 from Norma’s web site:
"Interestingly, no one seems to be able to determine exactly when or by whom the 9.3x57 cartridge was designed but it dates back to around 1900. This is nothing more or less than the 8x57J with the neck opened up to accept the then widely popular .366-inch diameter bullets. This chambering is obviously similar in performance potential and range of applications as the 9x57 Mauser. Performance and design are also similar to the 9.5x57 Mannlicher, which has a differently shaped case. Several similar chamberings were common at the turn of the last century. Of these, only the 9.3x57 survives in common use. This chambering is still used all over Scandinavia for hunting driven Moose and lesser species. The most common gun chambered for this round is the Husqvarna bolt action. This chambering has been nicknamed "The Potato Thrower" due to the fact that it launches a heavy bullet at moderate velocity. With such popularity and such a good track record on game at typical driven ranges, it is likely to be with us for a good many years, despite the fact that no mainstream manufacturer now chambers it."

How the 9.3x57 compares to some other cartridges:

I now need to mount a scope, work up some handloads, and go shoot it!!

Cheers!
-Bob F.

Bob:
I had the plearuse of viewing your rifle the other day in person, as I dropped off my '96 action 9.3x57 Husky to have it mounted and scoped by your gunsmith. Your's is a very nice rifle. Mine will start out at the same point as yours. They were about twins. Aphoto of mine would look just like your original rifle, so no need. Todd did a great job and you now have a great sporter in MHO, in a wonderful hunting caliber.
Mine will have Warne mounts, quick detach rings, glass bed, likely a new safety set up as with yours, and some bolt bending. I want to try to keep as close to the "mauser" style bolt as possible.
I wil also stay with the cock on closing. I like it.

Thanks for the referal to Todd at Lone Star Armory.

Nice job done. Mine, of course, mirrors your original, even to the toe chicp. I'll have to shorten the stock slightly, and will be putting on pad as well. Not only will it grip the coat a bit better, my ruined shoulder will appreciate it as well.
: 'll be putting on the 'Rer-style' safety. Some call it a Winchester style, looks closer to a Ruger to me, but never paid either much attention. I rarely have use for a safety.
: My oversize groove diameter is putting drawn-down 300gr. .375's out at 2,170fps, Speer 270's at 2,300fps, Norma 232's at 2,450fps and drawn 225gr. .375's at 2,540fps. The 232's and 225's are using the same load. All loads are quite safe in my M46, but may not be in your's. Mine has a .370"groove diameter. This rifle shoots 1.00" off the bench at 100 meters with all loads and sub 1" off the bags with it's iron sights at 50 yards. I hold the fore-end as if shooting offhand (back of hand on the bag) when shooting off the bags. This prevents different points of impact from load testing and sighting in to when shooting from hunting positions.
; How many times do you see guys at the range resting the stock or barrel against a hard object?

Bravo ALL!

Ah, another 9.3x57 sees the light of day!!

I can't wait to hear the reports after harvest days!!!

PS: Daryl, This season I plan to use the resized Hornady 225's. I tested a week ago and am now doing my practice work with my 225/AAC2230C load exclusively in my 146. My peepsighted 46 stays set up with 285 grain Prvi's.

9.3 or others here:
What experience have you had with the Lapua 286 gr 9.3? I bought a box to try, and it has the configuration I like. Large rounded nose with a lot of lead exposed.
I would presume these are loaded in 9.3x62 or x64 etc. I hope that they will expand.
Any info would be helpful.
Thanks.

None, as yet.

I have several times looked at ordering some Lapua Mega's, and then I remember my experience with the Prvi 285 and just go ahead and buy another couple hundred Prvis!

The Prvi 285 has performed splendidly for me in my x57's.

See ErikD's translation of a test here:

9.three x fifty7- seems to me those tests show best results for the 9.3x57 are the: 232 Vulcan, 250 Barnes X, 270 Speer, 286 Oryx (and I presume the 232 Oryx), the Privi Part 286, 286 Barnes X.
: At the very low factory level ballistics, they all expanded to at least 200 yards, Oryx giving the longest range results, ie: expansion stopping at 270 meters which is roughly 300yards, yet was only driven at 2,050fps approx. muzzle velocity.

Bob,

An absolute marvel! With the Prince of Wales grip she should handle beautifully too. We'll all look forward to some hunting pictures with her whenever you bag some lovely trophies.

Good hunting, my friend!

Heck, you've gotten to see the finished rifle before I have!! I haven't even picked it up yet from Todd's. I've only seen the photos of it!

You're very welcome about the referral to Todd. I thought you'd like him once you had a chance to visit with him. I spoke with Todd on the phone last night (on Aug 11) and he mentioned that you had dropped off your Husky and that you guys had a nice visit. I think you'll be happy with his work.

Cheers!!

thanks, Bob.
Good referral. Maybe we can compare the 9.3's sometime. I have always enjoyed your hunts photos and posts and the writing.
I am sure your rifle will be great in your hands and on a hunt. I am sure you can provide insite and pointers. Small world ( big city !) in Houston.
Some day, I wish to do some of the Africa hunts you have had. I have a few nice guns just begging me for more adventure.
All the best.

Hubba hubba. What a lovely piece of work. I'm heading down the same path as you in a couple of weeks. I am contemplating having square bridge claw mounts put on. The cost is high, but once you have them you're SOOO glad you did it. That would enable me to re-rust blue the whole gun in addition to refinishing the stock and glass bedding and adding a rubber pad. (It's not that I don't like recoil, ya see...not that at all...I just want to, um... protect the stock! Yeah, that's it!)

BF, great rifle! Few things in life give as much pleasure as, and yet are as affordable as, an older Husq Mauser.

Baised on the deer and wild pigs, some of them pretty big, taken with my 9,3x74R and the 270 Speer it would be an excellent bullet for the 9,3x57 for North American use.

Rod has done some pretty extensive testing with most commonly available bullets in the 9.3. I've rad the Speer bullet can seem 'hard' if not driven fast enough, yet too soft if driven too hard, ie: 2,650fps. If I missed the test on the 270 Speer driven at 2,300fps. please advise. That is the velocity I'm getting in my M46 and is the bullet I'm taking into the bush this year (10 days starting next weekend) as the camp's Cook's grizzly protection. Problems previously have mandated this. Back and shoulder problems have restricted my guiding for another year. Perchance I'll get some shooting in anyway?

Ne450No2 - what velocity were you driving them from your 9.3x74 please?

Daryl

They chronoed 2390fps.

The only one I have recovered was shot into a 300-325lb pig.
It performed perfectly.

I picked up two of them in 9.3 x 62 with broken stocks (not a problem for a stock man). They seem to often be poorly bedded leading to cracked stocks. One of these already has claw mounts so should be interesting. I have a gorgeous Paul Milliron stock cut out for one already.

I have mine with "Bob's" gunsmith now. He is installing Warne QD mounts and Rings and my Loupold 2-7 scope. I am keeping as much to original as possible. I like the stock and the bolt. The "smith" is a bit behind due to the hurricane down time.

Since this thread started it has poisoned my brain badly, causing a real desire. I have seen these little beauties on and off over the years and had thought they would make a wonderful light rifle. Now it has progressed to the point where I have convinced myself of a needed place in my battery for one. I have found a likely canidate and will be procuring it soon.

I see there is plenty of choices in the midrange jacketed bullet weights but one question comes up, is there a commercially made bullet mold out there for the 9.3 ???? That would just push me over the edge.

All this 9.3x62 talk finally resulted in my obtaining the barreled action of my original 9.3x62 - back from the dead. It had been between caught in the middle of a divorce battle between a friend and his wife - ended up being on the floor of a flooded basement and forgotten for several years. Originally, it had been stripped down for bead blasting and re-finishing which never gained momentum - I'd forgoten about it & actually thought I might have sold to someone. Wrong - well, it's back in my hands - I have a spare bolt and of course, a spare set of guard screws and inner metal. The stock disappeared somewhere along the line, however the rifle will probably end up with either a laminate or the great fitting Butler Creek stock - haven't decided. The outside of the barrel and action picked up some worms, but the bore is better than I remember it - bright and shiny with sharp rifling. Incredible, considering what it went through.

I have this site and this last 9.3 thread to thank for my gaining enough interest in the 9.3x62 - to pursue this barreled action and to end up with it again for use - and perhaps carry on with it's revitalization at some point.

Now you have really done it. 2 new places to get in trouble, GunBoards and NEI. I have some old NEI molds from years ago when the 454 Casull first came out, we all had to have a big bullet mold. I had forgot about them. GunBoards looks very interesting.

Once I get it I will make a cast and see what bullet size will work.

Hey Daryl_S the info on swaging is very informative, I have a pile of 375 molds and bullets
