Beautiful rifle. Looks to be in great condition with what must be a very rare sight. I love the Type S.

Congratulations on your beautiful rifle in apparently mint condition, Robin; in addition I had never seen this type of peep-sight mounted on a Mauser sporting rifle.
Your rifle should have been directly exported; this may explain the reason for the "Germany" marking on the stock, and maybe to a lesser extent the combination stutzen & single trigger, then unusual on the Continental Europe market.

Marvellous piece of kit there......the rifle included!
Looks like the peep fits directly on top of the bolt release mechanism?
Certainly beautifully over engineered, it would be very tough to say the least just looking at the build of the components alone!
Very nice stalker indeed.

This peep sight was often mounted on the Mauser Wehrmann-buchsen (Serviceman's rifle) target rifles. It attaches to the bolt stop.

Wow! What a great find indeed. Lovely rifle and what great condition for something almost 100 years old. How does it shoot?

Although the rifle is not "mint," I would describe it as being in "very good" condition. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and all parts have matching serial numbers.

However, it is missing the two folding blades (leaves?) on the rear open sight. Does anyone know a source for sight blades or an entire original sight? (I have a similar but slightly cruder sight from a Brno ZKK, but the blades will not interchange.)

DORLEAC might have some old sights lying around.

Also looking for an appropriate front sight hood. The rifle has slots in the front ramp for a hood, but I am not sure if it originally even came with one.

You might want to try Gary Fellers for the sights - 817-346-9633. He is a little unorthodox in his business methods but probably as likely as anyone in the country to have unusual items. I bought a Lyman 48R from him a few weeks ago, mint and still in the original cloth pouch with cosmoline.

The usual routine is to leave a message on his answering machine and tell him what you’re looking for. He will normally call back.

Other than that, you might have some luck on eBay or by contacting higher end gun dealers.

Also, Recknagel (spelling?) may have something.

I would not try to replace the original Mauser rear sight, even if the useless folding leaves are missing. If you drive that rear sight out of it's dovetail, you will find the full serial number of the rifle on the underside.

I saw those serial numbers...But its not as if I was going to throw it away...it will always accompany the rifle. Sooner or later I'll find an original sight (maybe on a beater Oberndorf sporter) and can replace the leaves. Its really a very minor problem.

There is a guy in Arkansas that was selling some vintage original mauser sight hoods on eBay awhile back. He may still have some. I got an original front sight hood for my Type A 9.3x62 from him and was pretty excited to be able to do so.

I came up with a temporary replacement for the incomplete original rear sight: In my parts box I found a complete single folding-leaf sight that was a close fit. I believe it came off an Oberndorf Mauser Model C, although I don't know if was original to that rifle. After a bit of filing and stoning (on the sight, not the rifle!) it slid into the dovetail. In general it is a sturdier sight than the original and I actually prefer the way it looks. The original sight now goes into a parts box with other spare bits from the Model S, including the guard locking screws, and the stiff trigger spring.(The original trigger pull was ridiculously heavy. I replaced it with a standard Mauser 98 trigger spring.) I also swapped out the slightly chewed up bolt stop screw. I thought there might be something special about the Wehrmann sight screw, but the standard Mauser 98 bolt stop screw fits just fine.

Very appropriate rear sight; it looks as it has always been on the rifle!

Beautiful.

They don't make them like that anymore.

I often wondered...that generation that grew up with muzzleloaders and pinfire saw the repeting rifle as some modern crap?..

The early repeaters were not held in high esteem on the US prairies due to very poor killing power due to 2 of their characteristics as I understand this "topic".

First, the very early ones were simply under powered pistol ctg. chambered rifles, such as the .44RF Henry, M66 and M73 Winchesters in .44-40 & .38-40.

Later, with the improvement of larger ctgs., .45/70, .45/90 and .50-110 in the later Winchesters, these were hampered by slow twists that would only stabilize short, light bullets. The Buffalo hunters held them as useless, according to author "Frank Seller's"(IIRC).
Other makers did make better repeaters, like Marlin's Model 81 and Bullard rifles, chambered for the government ctg., but seems to me, they also used only the 405gr. 'government' bullet. Marlin came out with it's own .45/70 Marlin bullet in a flat nose, for the tubular magazines.
These rifles still could not match the range and accuracy of the powerful single shot rifles of Sharps, Remington and Ballard.

Beautiful Type S that’s a great looking example with a tough site to find! I’ve yet to find an S, one of these days, so many have issues with originality though.

In an obscure dusty section of a university library three or more decades ago, I found a very old book written by an English game keeper who thought that the new-fangled percussion caps were "modern crap"...but rather than flintlocks, he actually preferred to use his old wheelocks. And he romantically went on at length about their virtues...claiming that they had some sort of poetic affinity or echo with the nature of the forest....very much like the way blued steel and walnut fans these days condemn stainless and synthetic stocks. Wish I could remember the name of that book.

By the way, I ditched that Wehrmann peep sight...designed as a target sight for service rifles, it was just too flimsy for a hunting rifle, in my opinion.

I suspect that the type S is more common in Canada than in the USA. Without looking too hard, I have found three or four, although this one is the best so far. A good type M seems harder to find up here.
