Kurtz Mauser
      #249814 - 02/07/14 06:39 AM

Hi Guys
I picked up this Kurtz at the Tulsa Gun Show in April.
There are a few things that need doing on it but other than that its a pretty neat little rifle.
The serial number puts it in August 1927
I hope you like it.

Very nice. What caliber?

I wonder who did the bolt handle. Does any one recognize the work?

6.5X54 on the top of the barrel shank and something X 57 on the left side of the barrel in front of the receiver ring. Says 6.5X57 on the paper tag too.
I am thinking it is a 6.5Kurz rechambered to 6.5X57. Do the X57 cartridges fit in a kurz magazine with standard COL?

Looks to me like the paper tag says 9.3x57.

They are neat trim little rifles, have you researched that coat of arms monogram? Here are a couple of pic's of a original type B single square bridge Kurz Mauser chambered 250-3000 1932 vintage.

Nice rifle but I don´t understand what´s wrong with yours hands there in USA because you always convert bolt handle like this. In this case that kind of handle fits like mustard in coca cola.

First of all they are not my hands .The rifle is now in Australia and the bolt handle is one of the things to be rectified the front action screw was just made and will be engraved next week.I'll get rid of that abomination of a safety and get the proper one suitably checkered. It looks like I might have a line on the correct scope and mounts and put some screws in where they drilled and tapped the front mount.
Most people don't last as long as this rifle without having a few things altered or changed along the way, I think she has lasted pretty well without being butchered to much.

Regards the Crest or Coat of Arms. I've worn out this keyboard searching for anything that resembles the one on the stock. There is not many with three chevrons or the horns on top of the standard. If anyone has any ideas please let me know.

all the best

Only loads with deep seated, short, light bullets. The inside length of the unaltered Kurz magazine is 69 mm = 2.71”, while the max cartridge oal of the 6.5x57 with 10g = 160 gr bullets is 82 mm. You cannot use loads with the bullet protruding more than 12 mm = .472” from the case mouth and have them work through the magazine. This may lead to the next problem: Proper 6.5x57 chambers conforming to CIP standards are cut with a long, 30 mm = 1.18” minimum throat to accommodate the old, long roundnose bullets, coal up to 82 mm. So many 6.5x57 barrels don’t show good accuracy with short, pointed bullets. This is the reason why the 6.5x55 SE with it’s much shorter 14.10 mm min. throat has made inroads into German hunting rifle use. The Swede is often more accurate with light, pointed bullets, while it is a twin in all other ballistic aspects.

Beautiful rifle, should look great with the alterations that you propose. Hopefully you can get it to shoot some useful loads accurately.

SBS470, very nice rifle.
They should be able to strainghten out the bolt handle easily enough. Same for the holes. That definately looked like a project worth taking on. Looking forward to seeing reports on the finished project.

sbs470,,nice rifle and i like it the way it is just as it is ,,not that i like swept back bolt handles but,,who ever did the work was not an amateur and the engraving was obviously done at the same time everything else was ,, just because there isnt a makers name doesnt mean it has to go back to original ,,the bolt handle is already cut too deep into the stock to bring it back furthermore it will never look to be like any originals ive ever seen with all that engraving ,,,this looks like jules labantchni , or pachmayr just my thoughts .....paul

SBS470, Great find, a real beauty that has been taken care of! I do agree that if I could go back to the 60's or 70's and SMACK all these guys that were obsessed with swept back bolt handles..I would! LOL, but this one was well done and I would be proud to own it! Oh, by the way, LOVE the Wappen! Congrats...Kevin.

I have had the coat of arms identified, finally.
It is the coat of arms of the van Voorst tot Voorst family. A thirteenth century Dutch noble family.
the current Baron van Voorst tot Voorst is a Dutch politician.
They can be checked out on Wikipedia. Also a picture of the coat of arms
I have to thank the Australian Hereldry society for doing the research on this for me.

all the best
