Mannlicher 1905 takedown questions
      #381257 - 16/12/23 02:38 AM

Hi, everyone!
I just purchased this M1905 takedown in 9x56 with British proofs on the receiver and the serial number on the trigger guard. Although at first I thought it was a Rigby made rifle, apparently it is not. The takedown system is slightly different from Rigby as well. I should have the rifle in my hands next week when the transfer goes through but meanwhile I would like to post a few pictures and I have a few question about it.
Any thoughts on which company did the conversion?
There is a number 3709 on the trigger guard applied in Rigby style.
It appears that the receiver was drilled for a Alex Martin mount and scope. Any suggestion on where to procure one?
Any general thoughts about this gun are welcome!
Thank you!

you have to use a photo hosting site. I use Imgur but most of the people on imgur are anti gun. I like to post just to tick them off. Once you post on the site copy the bbc code that they provide. As below.

Very nice and a proper takedown not the usual MS takedown. I have been searching for a takedown like this for awhile. I'll keep searching until I find one. lol

Any thoughts about which British company could have done the conversion?

I believe the original scope on this rifle looked like this:

I would say that regardless of who made the rifle it is an absolute beauty, and very unique. Great wood and really nicely made.

As to the side mount, even if you are able to get hold of one by the original manufacturer there is no guarantee that the screw holes would line up, as during that era much of the scope mounting business in the UK was made to order and much of it was made by hand or at least partly. You might find that you will have to custom make one to the original design but with holes pitched to match your rifle.

That is an elegant looking piece! The very first time I've seen a takedown stutzen.

I believe the rifle has a lot or Fraser looking work done too it.

Thank you, everyone, for your comments!
A few questions:
I also find it strange that a stutzen type stock was made with a takedown.
Is there a way to identify the company that did the conversion based on the type of takedown mechanism used?
Also, given that the number on the trigger guard is fairly high at 3709 and assuming that the conversion took place pre-WWII, would that point at a well known and large outfit that made a lot of custom rifles?
Is there a reference book on British gunmakers of that era that has detailed information about the trigger guard serial markings and the types of takedowns used?

Thank you!

After doing some internet digging, I found another Fraser trigger guard serial number very close to mine!. And the font is identical! I think Georgegibbs505 is right!
It must be a Fraser made rifle.
I will take it apart when I have it in my hands next week and will post more detailed pictures.
Thank you!

Finally received the rifle and took it apart.
No Fraser maker mark anywhere but comparing to other Fraser made rifles, it certainly looks like his work.
Here are some additional pictures.

Veloce --Could you send photos of the gun taken down so we can see the details of the takedown arrangement and mechanisms? I am in the process of making a gun using a Greek 1903 M-S action, and I intend to make it a takedown. It would look similar to the gun you've shown us in these pictures. Mine will stay chambered in 6.5x54 M-S, of course!

Thanks,
Tony
