Mannlicher-Schoenauer Model?

I bought this rifle at Holt's in July. ATF is asking for a model number. There's none marked on it. I've ran across a photo of an European model only but it has the model "NO" marked in the usual place. Any help is appreciated.

Going by the rear sight base and the serial number, it is a Model 1925. The only Mannlicher - Schoenauer that had no model date or designation marked on the receiver ring, but just the metric caliber designation, here 7,62x63 for.30-06.

'Sequoia' was the M1924 marketed through Sequoia Importing Co. of San Francisco and Detroit.
They were all chambered for the .30-'06 cartridge and were marked M1924 rather than 7.62 x 63.

Steyr manufactured rifles and carbines in several chamberings built on the M1924 type receiver (longer than previous models) from the mid 1920s through Anschluss that have come to be known as 'M1925'.

It has been written that much unsold inventory from the Sequoia contract was either overstamped with '7.62 X 63' over the prior 'M1924' designation or reconfigured to cartridge sizes more popular in Europe and then overstamped with the appropriate cartridge designation.

Thanks for reminding me of why the MS were marked Sequioa. I had forgotten that was the name of the US company that contracted for MS in 30/06.
The M1924 Sequioa & M1925 rifles are very nice rifles. Casper50, you hae a very nice rifle.

The M 1924 „SEQUOIA“ model came with a three-leaves “Express” sight, all leaves folding down. The Steyr serial numbers are all three digit below # 6oo. They were originally marked “M 1924” on the receiver ring and “SEQUOIA” on he barrel reinforce without any hint to the chambering. Left-over examples had the M 1924 line removed and were restamped “KAL:7.62x63”. Here is a photo of mine, Steyr serial number 299. The SEQUOIA inscription may be hidden below the “factory” scope mount base, but I am not curious enough to unsolder the base just to have a look at it.

As casper's rifle has a four digit serial number, the receiver ring shows no signs of a former "M 1924" inscription being removed and the rear sight base is for a standard M-S sight, it is identified as a M 1925.

This might be helpful. Straight (not Monte Carlo) stock, bright bolt handle, definitely not an M1924. I'm going with M1925 as well.

Any chance on getting the date it was proofed? That would certainly neck it down to pre-1950/post 1950.

No bright bolt here, merely the guide rib and the handle are worn and polished white from use.
No need to look for a proof date. The magazine floorplate with two holes shows it's a prewar action. Post 1950 floorplates have just one hole.

Thank you. I did not know that about the magazine floor plate. I guess I haven't spent enough time with a post 1950 model.

Looking at this rifle brings back a bad memory. About 3 years ago (there's a thread on it here somewhere) I ran across a Sequoyah in a local pawn shop. It had been buggered up in so many ways there was just no reasonable way to get it back in order. Seeing a rare beauty like that abused so badly was heartbreaking.

Casper, you are a fortunate fellow. Congratulations!
