Steyr Zephyr 22LR 1956
      #355647 - 29/07/21 04:09 PM

Finally got my hands on a Steyr zephyr 22. Came with a pecar 2 3/4 x64 Scope and mounts, could do with some TLC. Stripped the rifle down and a good going over and clean. Re assembled and quick sight in over a garden chair at 25 m. Couple of batches wouldn't feed but the RWS and CCI quiet look promising.
Serial number puts it around 1955-56 # 6XX
heres some pics

sub sonics and groups win and highland wouldn't feed 25m 5 shots

10 shots cci

Matt, yes it was on used guns about a fortnight ago. First caller so lucky. Picked up a spare mag as well. Might get the scope reconditioned and mounts as well. Tidy little rifle.
Cheers Mick

Congratulations on your great find, Mick; a Steyr Zephyr stutzen is the "must have" on any gentleman's gun rack! Did you manage to get enough magazines with her?
By the way, CCI are really excellent rimfire ammunition; although I mostly use RWS High Velocity HP for .22LR, my preference for .22WMR goes to CCI Maxi Mag HP.

Yeah well done Mick, it certainly looks good and was about a grand cheaper than most others that have been on offer, especially considering it has a scope and mounts as well. Interesting that it has a single trigger, almost all I have sen have double set triggers. I have found the Winchester 40 and 42 grain Power Points to work exceptionally well in both my Brno and Mauser 22's.

Well done Mick. That is an excellent pick up. It should serve you well.

I picked up a new Zephyr in May and sent it back to Winchester yesterday. It will not eject reliable. 10 seconds with a dremel would fix the problem but I would rather it done right. It does shoot very well.

Have admired this lovely new acquisition of Mick many times. Have not posted yet! Excellent. Wonderful rifle.

What does one in the Top End shoot with a .22RF? Just wondering? Those tiny wallaabies? Birds of some sort? Never worked it out, but how far North do rabbits go?

Whatever, it will be done with style by Mick.

Darwin hairless rabbits.
Im realy enjoying this rifle several packs of subs and z's , cane toads and palm nuts rolled along the ground around the block. Joey has put a few magazines thru it as well. very accurate ejection a bit weak and trigger a bit heavy but a fine rifle. 2 3/4 pecar is very good despite outer appearances.
looking forward to a session on real bunnies.
cheers Mick

Dankeschoen Herr Marrakai and Mick for the answers. Only thing, one can't eat cane toad legs, or can one?!

Thanks.

The poison glands on the back of cane toads are a bit of a worry. Supposedly if a crow tips them over onto their back, they are edible by the bird. If eaten from the back, poisonous. So careful treatment might make them edible. Me, too, I'll let others try them first.

On bush roads, we of course see a lot of rabbits during various season at night. Always in Northern SA. Makes sense North of Alice Springs.

I wonder what prevents them from spreading further North? The humidity and more mosquiotes/myxi? In flood country, drowned warrens would also reduce where they could live. Bowever would not stop them in higher country.

I do remember seeing some further North, the last trip and was surprised, but don't remember where.

I have seen rabbits numerous times when driving home from Micket Creek range in Darwin.

...but they always duck back under the other Mick's fence before I can get a rifle out!

True!

Really nice rifle, Mic.

Why the subsonics? How does it do with HV Hp stuff?

Well done Mick; and rabbits are much better for the pot than last year's cane toads!

... but is the Steyr as good as the Walther KKJ from the same era??

I have recently bought a KKJ, and it is excellent, but I have never seen a Steyr. The KKJ is much better made than my BSA Supersport Five, with a much better magazine design.

Good stuff Mick.
Living in Darwin does reduce one's ability to bust a few bunnies on weekends with the small-bore classics, and I do miss that.
Very envious.
