My Greek Steyr 1903 in 6.5x54 M-S, seemingly an military rifle sporterised basically into a stutzen with a butter knife bolt handle.

Originally purchaed to sporterise nicely. Maybe one day ...

Currently cold enough for a Southern July Winter Christmas. Surrounded by friends.

Today and yesterday have been the first days in some weeks that it hasn't hit more than 100 Fahrenheit here and it will be 100+ again for the foreseeable forecast.

Hard to see in the pix, but have your stripper clip guides been cut / polished away? If so, that's somewhat unfortunate as loading by stripper is so smooth and efficient on the MS.

Looks like a dandy shooter. How does she run?

I have dies for it but never any brass. A couple of years or more ago, put my name in for 200 to 300 cartridges through ozhunter. The full loaded privi catridges are cheaper than very expensive brass alone. However I may end up with some still, but they will be sitting in Sydney and have to be picked up personally or by someone else travelling. Ammunition was changed to an explosive by law for freight and needs a special explosives truck. TNT now I believe refuses to even service the firearms industry for ammunition so a real problem, even possibly for importers and distributors.

I would really like to finally shoot this rifle. I won't need handloaded ammo for a long long time, if I could get 200 to 300 cartridges. Hopefully it shoots well enough. Only open sights.

I've taken one Norge elg / Norwegian Moose, with a stick and a half antler or so. But with a 7x64 mm of ErikD's.

These friendly and menacing beasties are Swedes from the land of Ikea. It was a chilly Southern Winter day so decided a Christmas look.

What is suitable for a Greek rifle? Perhaps a boar or a fish? I guess they have feral goats somewhere, and maybe red deer and fallow deer? Mountain goats? Roe? One never thinks of Greece and medium game???

I included the bear because there was a story about a brown or black bear or could one hunt one with a 6.5x54 at the time.

I just had my example of a Greek Mannlicher out of the "military relics" gun-safe last night for some fresh air. After patching-out all the ancient Bisley Nitro Solvent the bore actually doesn't look as disastrous as I remembered. Dark in the grooves, sure, but I'm thinking of putting a few mild loads through it on the weekend to see if they go through the target point-first. The stock is a bit dismal though, unashamedly a battlefield pickup I would say.

If I didn't already have a couple of original MS sporters I would salvage the action and follow John's lead, but given the prices vintage military rifles are fetching in Australia at the moment it would probably repay a careful restoration. At least then I won't have to raid the grandson's toybox for fluffy game animals!

A project for the next round of covid lockdowns, perhaps?

Original, unaltered, examples of the military models are becoming increasingly scarce and more widely appreciated.

The safety on my rifle does not work. It fails to turn. I think just like a military Mauser M98 I have have, the bolt shroud safety has a metal protusion needing grinding off? They should turn readily. But simply won't. I think their is metal blocking the way.

John, sorry to ask this mundane question but have you thoroughly stripped the bolt? If yes, could you share pictures of the parts involved in the safety mechanism so that we can compare with our civilian models? Correct me if I am wrong but I think the Greek 1903 is built around a short magazine (as the 1900 and civilian 1903, 1905, 1908 & 1910 are); some parts are interchangeable so safeties may also be?

The Greek MS Safety Lever does fit a Model 1903 MS.
I bought a surplus Greek safety lever and filed it not down to clear a scope bell.
It worked OK but I replaced the scope with a smaller bell and now use the original lever.
It seems to me that if the lever is interchangeable the other bolt parts would interchange as well.

No I haven't stripped the bolt. A good suggestion. I haven't had loaded ammo in the ast, but now do have some brass. Might actually get to shoot it some time soon.

Stripping the bolt is a good idea to see if the safety can be turned.

If you can.
The safety lever must be turned in order to disassemble your bolt.

Wrong! Look at the video to the moment when the guy presses the safety forward/down. This is sufficient to free the striker nut. Just reassembly is a bit more difficult. But even then it is easy, more so than with the predecessors, the M88 commission action, the turnbolt Mannlichers M92, 93, 95 and the Mannlicher-Schoenauer M1900.

It looks like someone has shortened the sear on either the bolt,,or the trigger sear,,maybe both.
That to allow a shorter & faster striker fall.

The problem is that when the sear engagement points are shortened to gain that speed-lock type of action,,the striker does not sit back as far when at full cock.
That places the notch in the striker out of position that is there to accept the lug on the Safety when swung into place.
The striker knob itself is too far forward to allow the Safety to swing as well.
So even if you grind that seemingly offending 'tab' off of the Safety,,the Safety still won't work as the engagement groove in the striker is too far forward to engage.

Manualy pull the striker back and at the same time attempt to engage the Safety. I'd bet the Safety will glide right into place once the striker is back another 1/4" + or so.

Take the bolt out and examine the underside of it,,the square sear engagement abutment. See if it looks filed or ground on.
Also look at it's parent engagement surface on the trigger mechanism sitting in the bottom of the sear channel in the action. It may have the same look.

If you have another 1903 Greek or a Steyr 1903 Commercial, simple side by side comparison will show any difference quick enough.
They are the same action, minus the bolt hold down spring on the Greek Military action.

Just looking at the pics, the striker on the rifle looks way to far forward for a normal full cock position.

If either has been worked over,,the trigger group part and or the striker are generally available as surplus 1903 Greek M/S parts.
