Steyr 1911

The barrel is marked 1940.

The rear sight.

The Dutch had more variations of mannlichers than any other country. According to my reference there were at least 13 versions of Dutch carbines and an additional 5 versions for the KNIL (Royal Dutch East Indies Army). If I had to guess its closest to a Karabun M.95 No.4 OM or NM (the differences are stocks and fittings etc.).

However as it does not have a bayonet lug I would gues that this example is more likey to be a KNIL carbine than a Dutch example. The rifle vesions proved too long for the small statured East Indies soldiers so they were issues carbines while the rifles were kept for the European soldiers. The lack of a bayonet lug is because the native soldiers were issued cutlasses for hand to hand fighting and for use as bush knives.

If the bore is good and all parts are matching I would agree with Lancaster and say that its propably too good and original to convert into a sporter. There are heaps of Dutch carbines around that have bad bores and really bad woodwork.

So the 1911 on the action, what does that signify? That the action is a model 1911 or made in 1911 or ?

Also the barrel 1940, would that mean the barrel was probably made in 1940 and the rifle barrelled or re-barrelled approximately then?

***

Thanks Igorrock for that link. Looks pretty much the same.

Thanks Lancaster for the information.

GK, Thanks for the information and reply.

Lancaster and GK,

I read what you are saying regarding if this is in good condition a military rifle collector might like it in their collection.

I bought the rifle off used guns, and this one and a second one sat on their listings I believe for eighteen months. So collectors would have had ample chance to snap it up if they were interested. Also there was a second one there anyway still listed when I looked last.

Regarding matching numbers will have a look to see if it does.

Re good vs bad bores, as I want a shooter, I don't want a rifle with a poor bore. Better a rifle with a poor bore sits in a collectors gun safe than mine! I am not intending to re-barrel but want a 6.5x53R Steyr. Haven't checked out the bore properly yet. If the barrel is not up to it, it can become a collectors safe-queen.

However I only bought this rifle after I believed I missed out on the 6.5x54 previously displayed on a thread. So my intention was to try to do something with that one first. Neither are a high priority seeing what I have bought since. So they may come back on the market one day still in same condition.

I do like the look of this classic Steyr action however in a nice customised rifle. Good to get information on them and their origins.

John the Dutch had a 1895 model Mannlicher so the 1911 would be a manufacture date and the 1940 would be when it was last rebarreled. It looks to be in very good condition especially if it was used in Indonesia , normally they are beat to hell when the colonials finished with them. I would agree that if it's all matching it's more of a collectors piece than a candidate for a sporter. As a matter of interest a quantity of these rifles were sent to Lithgow in about 1940 to be rebarreled to 303 British ,from memory they were lost when the ship carrying them back was sunk.

good to hear the rifle ist still original

have made hunting rifles in the past and will do it in the future but allways working with parts or deactivated guns of the lowest collector value where I use the action. this dutch mannlicher is just to fine to butcher it. they are very rare in this condition.

do you shoot it in the last 11 years? could be a good hunting rifle when the iron sights are right.

Hi Lancaster, still a "collectors" safe queen. Haven't shot it yet.

If it ever gets modified sporterised it won't be soon. Can't pay for it anyway.

Loads of higher priorities for both getting shooting and customising as needed first.

Nitro John,
Yes, those are the proper ones for the Dutch/Romanian Steyr Mannlicher.
Got those same ones from Buffalo and use them in my Wm. Evans .256 Mannlicher (6.5x53R)

John;
If you want to know more about 'Dutch Mannlichers' (or any other military firearm of the 19th - 20th Centuries) than any human should, watch Othias and Mae at C&Rsenal. Their videos are very thorough.

If your information is not in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oYReGvJeiO0 , watch their others. There are several on Mannlicher variants.

I've poked about on the 'net a bit and found things that agree with / expand on GK and others' posts above.

Watch this vid at 22:34 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0lXFAXzLfk for a variant that matches yours - the KNIL Marechaussee, or M95 Karabijn.

Another reference: https://www.quartermastersection.com/dutch-east-indies/infantry-weapons/1249/M.95Karabijn

KNIL: https://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/europe/nl-landmacht-knil.htm

KNIL video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2MlbRPjppOs

From what I've found in a brief internet search, they seem to be fairly common in horrible condition but yours may be rather scarce as clean as it is if unmodified. It seems that most of them were used and used hard for decades.

Have you checked the chamber size just to be sure? The 1940 date would fit for a rebarrel in Holland just prior to Nazi invasion, and is consistent with other examples to be found on the 'net, but many were later converted to .303 British.

I've got something for you, John.

I seem to have discovered the identity of the unit marking on your KNIL Marechaussee. Per information found here; https://www.gunboards.com/threads/dutch-knil-carbine-help.1085037/ , it was issued to the KNIL South & East Borneo Territorial Command.

Here's the pertinent bits:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Z. O. B. is Garnizoensbataljon Zuid- en Oost afd. Borneo. Garrison Battalion of South & East Borneo. the e- is usually preceded by a unit number but because of the low weapon number and the fact that it is a garrison rather than a field unit there is no unit number. I don't know where the garrison was located on Borneo. Neat pick up. Thanks for sharing.
Regards
Dan

South and East Borneo, would suggest the Oil well and oil storage Town and Port of Kalimantan, the only major place that would merit a Garrison for its strategic importance.
Also the Provincial capital.
The KNIL managed to fire the oil plants and storage before the Japanese occupied Borneo in 1942.
Doc AV

Doc AV
I think you nailed it. The carbine configuration is that of the Marechaussee. The unit information came from the book "Nederlandse Vurrwappens, KNIL En Militaire Luchtvaat 1897-1942." by Drs. G. de Vries & B. J. Martens. The book is printed in the Dutch language. They wrote several books on Dutch weapons.
Regards
Dan

------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, if I have it right, your carbine came into this world at Steyr, Austria, in 1911 as a full length 'Dutch' M1895 Mannlicher rifle which was sent to Hembrug in the Netherlands in 1940 to be reconfigured to its present carbine form for issue to the KNIL at the Garrison Battalion of South and East Borneo.

John,
You may run into some problems importing those stripper clips from the USA. I think there might be restrictions for the sellers on sending them here (the rules seem to change constantly these days). They are available at the gunshows over here in NSW & I've been buying them for use in my Steyr sporter. If you can't find any in SA I'm happy to send a few over to get you going.

"Buffalo Arms" if that is of whom you are referring, exports to Canada - things like moulds, but if stripper clips are listed as gun parts, they might have export restrictions at the USA border to anywhere outside those borders.
DHS might have to be contacted, or more simply, Buffalo Arms.

John, you won't have any problems bringing the clips into Australia, I have done it heaps of times. You will however struggle to get anyone in the US to send you any. From Europe however is not a problem which is where many of mine have come from.

I just poked around on the 'net and found these:

https://enoughgun.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1240

https://www.police.nsw.gov.au/online_ser...arms_or_weapons

https://b709a-form-victoria.pdffiller.com/

https://enoughgun.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=76&t=782

It seems that (if information is current and if I understand it correctly) to receive firearms magazines (or any other part, ammo component...) you would need to apply for and receive a 'Form B709' (and / or B709A ?) from your local law enforcement agency(?).

I'd be willing to have them 'drop shipped' to me and then forward them to you as long as it's legal and we're compliant.

Otherwise I'd simply declare them as 'machine parts' or 'hardware' on the customs forms and ship them off. Shipping of anything from US to OZ seems to be rather expensive, however.

I sent you a PM with a few more details.
