Won a 1910 at Holt's yesterday.
      #342183 - 12/06/20 04:29 PM

Just won this one at Holt's auction last night. GES. STEYR .375 EX 'M1910' BOLT-MAGAZINE STUTZEN SPORTING RIFLE, serial no. 2860, 19 3/4in. nitro barrel, ramp-mounted bead fore-sight, leaf rear-sight with 1 x folding, manual flag safety, turn-down butterknife bolt, set triggers, detachable floorplated, 14in. well-figured full-length pistolgrip stock with cheekpiece, sling swivels. Anyone have an idea what that perforated piece of metal is about over the chamber?

That is odd looking. It appears to be soldered to the barrel just ahead of the receiver, perhaps as a 'saddle' to which a scope mount had been soldered?

I was thinking it was soldered as well and plan on removing it asap.

Apart from that weird addition it is in remarkable condition Casper!
It is in a great old caliber as well, perfect for a good old fashioned boar hunt / driven game!
Keep us all informed, it certainly has me intrigued as to what it actually is?

Will do. I still have brass, dies and bullets from the last one that I bought but had to sell as the barrel had almost no lands at all. The new owner was going to see about getting it sleeved. I wished him luck.

Good pick, Casper, congratulations on winning it!
Are you going to have it scoped? It looks like the rear base for a claw mount is stil in place and if you set a front mount it will replace the perforated steel plate.

If I can find a front mount, yes I will. I have a set that fits the 1903. I'll see if it will fit the 1910 as well.

Thanks John. I believe it was a bargain at $567 including buyer's fees.

Casper, that rear base is a Steyr factory base for a swing off mount. No idea what the perforated strip is for, bizarre. If you need any help with the original front base or the rings jut let me know.

Will do Matt. I most likely won't have it in hand for almost a year. Seems to be taking that long lately to import from England. I had a shipment at the air freight when the shutdown began. It's now back at the exporter. Took 2 years to get that shipment to the air freight place. Now have to begin all over.

Wow, that time frame is insane. How could anything take that long to do. They built the Eiffel tower in less than a year. Very frustrating.

Brian, just for the record that last picture of the top of the action is not a factory mount but an aftermarket one based on the same principle. The factory mounts all have an offset pin on the front ring such as shown in the drawings. That method also allows the ring to be raised to allow a clear view for the open sights. Obviously a central pin does not allow that to happen.

up to 3 months to get the permit from ATF. The exporter I use is cheap but, because he has other and much more lucrative fish to fry I am down towards the bottom of the totem pole. He's also had a tough time lately with his employees.

Ok, still if you take on a job you should do it in a reasonable time frame. We also have a number of small jobs that we do for the trade but we still do them in the same time frame as the bigger jobs, actually often quicker so that that they are done and finished.

What sort of tough time did he have with his employees.

First his export guy quit and reading between the lines I believe stole some stuff. Then his shop was broken into, they made a hole in the roof and lowered a kid inside. Since the first one quit he's had two other export guys. Now the lockdown. Crazy stuff.

Irrespective of the above which is not just bureaucratic.

It is getting so hard and long.

Once it seemed so easy and quick.

Now it seems so difficult. And very costly.

My guess it is purposeful, to make it hard to buy firearms from overseas.

So ridiculous. With so many purchases being "old clunkers", but excellent vintage guns, much desired by their purchasers, and not desired by "rebels" or criminals. Imagine a criminal getting a .375 Express or 9.5x57., and then wanting to feed it. Will they join these forums to find out how to handload ammo? Ha ha. We aren't talking about Ar-15s or other mass destruction weapons. Paperwork of course protects us all endlessly. Of course any civilian owning any sort of weapon seems the problem with those in "authority".

I was so lucky Rolf was so committed to sending me the two M-S's he had in Germany. If commercial seller, I would almost certainly have never seen them. Interestingly it was through Holt's that they ended up getting here. With a Holt's agent here being a friend and shipped with his usual stock. Still took an effort and a long time, and no small amount of dollars to get them here. Definitely not for some odd cheaper single firearm.

I think you will enjoy your rifle when it arrives. Great useful calibre for Alaska as well.

A friend/gunsmith has picked it up and gone over it for me. Here's 3 more photos that he sent. Says that the bore is good.

Doesn't look as if any alteration to the stock was made so that's a plus. Try removing with some heat and then have to clean off the solder and touch up or reblue unfortunately.

That will clean up nicely, especially if that is soft solder.
You can remove it without affecting the surface finish (textures) of the barrel or action.
I see you got a smoking deal on the rifle.
Good for you.
