Edit. Actually some more:

And some other Steyr -models too.

Not exactly Mannlicher Schönauer but IMO very interesting thou:

"Sporterised Hungarian military action based on the Mannlicher action, with stock magazine, rare! Starting price: 500€"

IMO this is very nice; in Wienna again:

"William Evans‚ Mannlicher-Schönauer. Original bolt handle modified to knobhandle, stock oval initialised "PHS", in its original canvas covered case with maker's trade-label, embossed "PHS". Starting price 4500€ "

Kuduae was the first one mention here the hungarian post war mannlicher schönauer clone rifle's build with M 98/40 surplus action's at FÉG/ Fegyver És Gépgyár in Budapest. the example's he had show were very look alike but this one in 7x64 here have the original M 98/40 cocking piece. proofed in 1956 a very nice made rifle and I wish we hade more informations about his hungarian made sporter's.

IMHO that William Evans M-Sch riffle was built on a barreled M03 action from the (Greek) military production. Up to 1905 Steyr did not sell commercial rifles or barreled actions, but everybody could buy a complete rifle from the military production runs. British gunmakers like Gibbs bought such complete military rifles from the Steyr factory and sporterized them to variing degrees, most often restocked and resighted. Sorry, but none of the photos above shows the right, bolt handle side of the action, as miltary and commercial M03 Mannlicher-Schoenauer actions are easily distinguished. All the commercial M-Sch actions have the flat bolt-hold-down spring inlet into the receiver bridge just behind the bolt handle, the military production receivers have none. Compare the photos above, as there is a sporterized Greek military one shown too, the one with straight bolt handle and hollow knob. Further, commercials have The "Oesterr. Waffenfabr.-Ges.Steyr" inscribed on the left receiver wall, while military production ones are merely inscribed with "Steyr" and the year of production, "1905" on my Gibbs.

Hey and hello,

regarding the gun auctions from Joh. Springer's Erben in Vienna, if you have any questions to specific lots, please let me know. It will be a pleasure to give you the information you are interested in. I work for Joh. Springer's Erben in Vienna and all the auctions run over my shop.

Beside the auctions, we hold a large, if not the largest, variety of different manufacturers and gunstyles (double rifles, shotguns, combinated guns, bolt actions, etc.) in stock. So if you are looking for special european or continental rifles, let me know.

By the way, we do all the paperwork for exports ourself and so are able to send the items worldwide, as far as there are no export/import bans existing.

All the best,
Konstantin

this "Tiroler Waffenfabrik Peter Longo Rich. Marhold Innsbruck" named rifle seems to be in fact a Meffert "Hubertus" rifle

please compare it with the first one we had here once in detail

a Meffert "Hubertus"

the Marhold/Peterlongo rifle

http://forums.nitroexpress.com/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=228846&an=0&page=1#Post228846

can there be any doubt?

could be possible that this Meffert sporter was build from military surplus and because Steyr made the M 88 this name can be found on the action. Meffert never produce the M 88 to my knowledge like Haenel and Schilling did so they had to buy what was available.

It's hard to understand why this rifle has gotten no action. I would think the scope is worth at least half the current price. http://www.egun.de/market/item.php?id=4572076 I don't care for the angled bolt handle or the ventilated pad, and I already have a 7X64 BRNO 22H I'm quite satisfied with, but still.... Nice stock!

Lancaster, my 6.5 should be here in a couple of weeks, as of yet whilst having fired it I haven´t had the chance to closely look it over. To open the floor plate to the magazine you push the forward "hole" down and swing the plate anti clockwise ' or can it go both ways, thanks in advance, Mike

On most rifles it may be turned both ways, on some one direction, left or right, is easier than the other.

here it is

9x57, 9,3x57, 9,3x53R, 9,5x56/ 375 Ne rimless, 375 NE flanged
whats missed here is the 9x57R
the 375 NE is probably a H&H development that came on the market in 1898/1899 and is based on the 303 Brit case. thats made it a natural conversion for the Lee Speed and for the Mannlicher M 92 too but this is very rare. the ballistic of this round made it also the rimmed version of the 9,5x56 MS the same way the 9,3x53R is it for the 9,3x57.

Nice british style Mannlicher Schönauer 6,5x54 MS for sale in Germany. Scope is old Zeiss 6x42. Rifles stock will need total renovation and scope mount should change as this one do not allow the bolt open when scope is installed at it´s place (as seller says in his text). It´s easy to agree when looking these fotos carefully.

http://www.egun.de/market/item.php?id=4940465

Edit. Same seller has another M-S rifle for sale. It´s not as nice as the first one but it has single trigger which would fit better to british style:

These are my latest Mannlichers. The first is a 1903 take down with a pop up tang sight and a Zielklein scope.

This next one is 1908 that came with a Zeiss scope that is being cleaned at the moment.

It has some obvious clues as to where it was retailed.

....but the retail was a big surprise for me.

Very nice rifles. When I saw the first foto of m/1908 and noticed those sights and pop-up cheek piece, I was quite sure this rifle is a british custom. Yours last foto confirms my advice.

I don´t know if there is any reason to say "reach level" when talking about soldered half scope rings. IMO they are a working solution in tecnical means but much too difficult to asembly. And what happens when scope goes broken...

Holland & Holland simply copied the WW1 Austro-Hungarian sniper scope mount, much like the one seen on this FEG "Mannlicher" sporting rifle. But as H&H did not use soldered half-rings, but clamping rings that were not proof against slight slipping, H&H added a distance rod as a mechanical crutch to keep the ring at the proper distance for secure lockup.

there could be no doubt that a modern weaver rail and a claw mount with soldered half rings must have a certain level of quality to work as intended. do you think they represent the same level of quality?
when making the second you have to fit the claw mount by hand disassemble the scope to solder the tube into the halfrings. than you assemble the scope again and proof the sight while shooting it.
disassemble the scope again for blueing the tube +rings and than assemble and finaaaaly ready.

the only other work I would compare it is soldering double rifle barrels - time consuming, expensive, possible making mistakes and start again
unfashionable

anyone from the art's and craft movement http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arts_and_Crafts_movement would have seen the soldered half ring as the highest level

IMO the question is the quality of work, not the way you mount your scope. Both soldering and weaver rail could be done badly if you don´t know how and what to do. But soldering is much more time consuming and expensive and you always need a gunsmith. I know that in Germany and Austria hunting /shooting has always been a hobby for people who have time and money to use gunsmith for all gun works but in scandinavia and USA hunting has in many cases been a part of living which means bad conditions and lower standard of living i.e. less money so that´s why these gunworks has been much more as DIY. For example I have seen fotos of famous Finnish seal hunters Mauser which scope mounts has welded to the rifle. Despite that this rifle was very accurate and served well as a tool for this prohunter.

So I think it´s mostly cultural question if you use claw mounts with soldered rings or steady mounts with weaver rail. Properly done both ways works well.

Most modern scopes are aluminium which precludes soldering in any case.

Kuduae, dear friend,

Regarding the H&H type English scope mount, which in fact is only a variation of the claw mount system, it is wrong to write that H&H did not use soldered rings.
In fact, originally, many mounts used rings soft soldered on the scopes steel tubes of the period; and this remained until the sixties, mainly on Hensoldt scopes with steel main tube.
Notice also the use of H&H mounts fitted to German scopes with 70° prismatic rail, an excellent solution to prevent the assembly from being able to take play.
Tension rod between rings appeared in the early eighties with the generalization of light alloy and larger diameter scopes tubes whose rigidity could not guarantee an assembly free of tolerances when fitted to big game rifles.
26mm steel tubes did not need this device whose sole purpose was to maintain a constant spacing between the rings.
Below are some pictures to illustrate these points.
Happy New Year to all !

the 10,75x68 in vienna was the bargain of the year 2014,this is the dream of any MS collector.

someone polished the barrel before maybe for an restoration but otherwise looks fine. that it was end for this money ... only explanation I have it was simply overlooked.
I have got the link to the auction before also but had no time to look in

With that long nose, totally out of proportion to the rest of the face, I think it greatly resembles a baboon. Still, not much worse than the "tigers" Jeffery used to put on their double rifles.

Immanuel Meffert/Suhl Hubertus rifle in 8x57I
for sale in sweden http://www.leifschmidt.se/tillsalu_studsare_hubertus.html
Studsare ”Hubertus”, 88 system, kal. 8x57J

My friend has handled this rifle and he told that it normal british style take-down i.e. with opening latch fore the trigger guard and pin in the fore-end stock.

A standard Steyr factory "take down", in fact a detachable stock. A pre-war factory option. Quite popular in the British empire, but rarely seen in Germany or Austria. Disassembly procedure: Take out the crosspin through foreend. Remove magazine floorplate, cradle and rotor. Turn a small latch in front of the triggerguard. Now the barreled action may be lifted out of the stock. No "pressing a button" only.

There should be a release "pin" between the button and the stock on the pin, if you press on it you can pull out the pin. On mine it was broken so I had it repaired, so that might be the case on yours as well.

It's interesting that the advertisement for this carbine lists the caliber as ".375 H&H Magnum", when it is obviously .375 RIMLESS NITRO EXPRESS (9.5 X 56 MANN. SCH.). I hope no one is led astray by this.

As it was put together by Holland & Holland on a M-Sch M1905 (9x56 M-Sch) action, it may also be H&H's own proprietary early .375 cartridge, the .400/.375 belted Nitro Express aka .375 Velopex. The .375 H&H Magnum is too long to fit into any Mannlicher-Schoenauer action.

here was maybe another one or is 40 grains cordite not enough for this cartridge, allready sold

Mannlicher-Schoenauer 1903 .375 NE caliber rifle. Holland & Holland pre-war custom takedown bolt action express rifle built on a Mannlicher-Schoenauer 1903. The gun is in very good condition showing some light wear and has a Paul Jaeger quick detach scope mount. The rifle was made in 1906 and has the correct Holland & Holland case, as well as a letter from Holland & Holland detailing the history of the gun. A terrific example of the early British gunmaker’s art.

1539/7016: The Bøje Benzon Mannlicher-Schönauer M/1903 .6,5X54 bolt action sporting carbine. No. 23208.
http://www.bruun-rasmussen.dk/search.do?pg=2&iid=300772917&cid=513&mode=detail

The Bøje Benzon Mannlicher-Schönauer M/1903 .6,5X54 bolt action sporting carbine. No. 23208. Mounted with a Carl Zeiss 6X32 sight in claw mounts. The rifle comes with a leather gunslip and a leather case for the scope.

Provenance: Dr. Sc. Bøje Benzon (11/8-1891 - 14/10-1976) and his descendants to this day. Bøje Benzon was a legendary big game hunter, environmentalist and served as chairman of Copenhagen Zoo between 1937 and 1945. From 1935 to 1947 he helped bring home the voluminous collection of large African mammals from Central and East Africa to the Zoological Museum in Copenhagen. He also wrote the book "My African Adventures," which was published in 1948. This rifle was part of Benzon?s equipment on these expeditions, and it has, besides countless antelopes, shot elephants(!), lions, leopards and monkeys, as well as seals and polar bears at the North Pole. It has been at Benzon?s side all over the world and in every conceivable type of hunt for mammals on land and sea.

Mannlicher-Schönauer M / 1903 was an extremely popular rifle among the famous hunters of the early 20th century. Ernest Hemingway, Walter D.M. (Karamojo) Bell and Elmer Kieth were among the rifle and calibre?s ardent supporters.

Obviously and unfortunately rebarreled to 7x57. All M 1910s were in 9.5x57 M-Sch aka .375 rimless Nitro Express originally.

I visited Hermann Historica today to assess a MS 1908 I am interested to bid for. Formerly it was incorrect advertised as 8x58R, which is now changed to correct calibre. :

Could become a nice stutzen for my hunting purposes...And: It is the correct barrel !!! Any objections ?

this is an auction we will probably never see again. some will remember collath500bpe from austria who was dying to early in 2010 as a very keen Mannlicher Schönauer collector here.

his collection is now for sale https://www.waffengebraucht.at/waffen/kugelrepetierer/32-stk-mannlicher-schoenauer-sammlung--5585

the last time we see this table where collath500bpe had made his pics.

his son hopes to find a well financed collector who will take over everything for a asking price of 55000 euro.

he made a website http://mannlicher-schoenauer-at.webnode.at/

I am looking for a while to find a period rebarrel MS in 9,3x57
http://auctions.springer-vienna.com/de/m...mp;currentpos=8

this seems again a new made rifle with austrian proof in 2016.
original proofed in britain in 1920 the original 9,5x56 barrel was maybe ruined by corrosive ammo and was now replaced by the 9,3x57 barrel because of factory ammo available.

That is beautiful. My old friend Hal Hartley, the stock maker from Lenoir, NC, had a long-time business relationship with Albin Obiltschnig. Back in the 1970s, Gun Digest would routinely showcase a joint creation of Hartley/Obiltschnig; every one that I can remember was built for Sol Levine of Omaha(?), Nebraska.

In 1972, my Dad, brothers and I sent Mauser 98 components, Mannlicher Schoenauer components and a Winchester M21 action to Herr Obiltschnig. Less than a year later, we had all our stuff back, all engraved and gold inlaid! The work was beautiful!

Very bloody nice, lots of small details which make it a really nice looking rifle. It is a pity that there aren't more custom MS rifles being built using old worn out rifles as a basis. People wouldn't think twice on an old Mauser but seem to hesitate with a MS. Anyway, a real beauty. The shape of the forend with the long ebony tip gives it a sort of Ischler Stutzen look. IMO. Thanks for posting.

Eye wateringly nice. Beautiful piece of timber with a Springende Back,Kaiser Haken and a steel grip cap. Sensational, although the scope mounts could be a little lower. I really love those little Mannlicher's. Thanks for posting.

Amazing that a trained gunsmith could take a rifle with such exceptional engraving and carving and fail to stamp the new caliber on it straight!

because its for MS clones too and I forgewt a little bit about the MS in auction thread

a FEG Mosin in 7,62x54R

https://vadaszapro.net/reszletek/283896/feg-gv-762x54r-golyos-vadaszpuska

the white spacer point this rifle into the 1970s but they are easy to remove
there can be no doubt about it anymore that this rifles were build as a MS clone in Budapest like the Mannlicher made with G 98/40 actions

Thanks for posting gents, very nice rifle superb gunsmithing work, lovely quarter rib, beautiful stock and tasteful engraving. The only criticism is that it looks a bit heavy for a 270 Win. Still, I would be more than happy to own it.

I agree - stupendous workmanship. I also agree with the weight, or seemingly slightly heavy - I would expect perhaps, a 9.3x62 build for heavier, modern-type loads, as in a 286gr. at 2,500fps.

Some absolute rippers there for sure. Interesting that the 7x57, 7x64 and 9.3x62 all have barrel banded front sling eyes and the 458WM which needs it the most doesn't. Superb Model 1905 take-down, very rare in that model. Thanks for posting.

One very patched up Mannlicher Schönauer:

Someone must have really liked this M1903 stutzen to have still used it after having it repaired - and repaired - and repaired so many times. The stories it could tell? That huge metal plate on the left side is really something .

It's listed on Gunbroker. The seller doesn't hold back in the description;
"Condition: Fair-Good, with multiple metal reinforcement patches, crack from right tang extending back to comb then down through grip to lower tang, crack in butt near toe, crack in forearm on left side at sling swivel, finish thinning on barrel with most other metal worn gray, rear set trigger absent, bolt appears original but does not match number on barrel, Bore: Bright, with some wear.", but still starts the bidding at $1300 USD:

Here's the listing: Gunbroker

John Sarks &Co must have been a gun dealer in Sydney Australia which doesn't seem to exist anymore but I am sure that some of the older Australian members will be able to tell us about that business.

The rings look like they have been made by a home gunsmith, otherwise very nice.

this was probably a low budget sporter in the end of the 1970s made from dirt cheap surplus rifles then.
the vergueiro was not seen at what this rifle is, a high quality DWM made pre ww 1 rifle.

people still underestimate this rifle

I love my vergueiro

Thanks for posting, I don't think there would be many members who wouldn't bid on that rifle if they had the money. Amazing that it is up for sale so soon after being finished, Mike Bailey bought it if I am not mistaken. He doesn't seem to post anymore and I sent him a PM a while ago to ask a question about another Mannlicher he has but I got no reply. Hope he is alright.

Bargain price as well, I bet it cost a lot more than that to build. A unique one-off rifle. Some great photos of the build that I havn't seen before.

Matt.

Here's an early Westley Richards (1910-12?) ad with ".375 Rimless", "in clips 1/- extra".

The factory load for .375 Nitro Express Rimless (.375 RNE) as listed in the 1939 Stoeger catalog was two grains lighter on Cordite than the 9.5X57, otherwise they are the same cartridge.

I too always looked down on these sidemounts. Try example is unmarked , but I believe they were made by EAW??

I decided to buy one , and quickly became very impressed with the practicality of it. They enable mounting of a vintage " modern" scope with centered reticle and 1 inch rings, an option not normaly available with factory period mounts. Mine is beautifully fitted and returns to zero every time.
When the scope is removed the mounting rail is very unobtrusive should you want to use iron sights.
Other options such as cutting through the front ring are not even worth considering.
Most of us Mannlicher shooters are well used to holding our heads erect....so not a problem.
If you get the chance, buy one...you will be pleasently surprised.

Best

Eric

I don't doubt their function or versatility - function over form, I suppose - just don't care much for their appearance.

My M1910 Takedown wears a period claw mounted Gerard Model B that was on it when Granddad bought it in Ceylon circa 1932.

A similar option was the 'Vienna Snapper' as shown in this image from the 1939 Stoeger:

Claw mount for Mousies:

Not all were installed by dovetailing the receiver. Mine has a dovetail through the barrel, just foreward of the receiver (not much better), but some have a ring or a 'saddle' soldered to the receiver or to the barrel as on this example from Dorleac.

I really do like your Lyman 1A, by the way:

If the owner wanted an AR-15, why didn't he simply buy one, instead of defacing a classic rifle? After all, don't they sell them in every corner store there, next to the beef jerky and chewing tobacco?

I'm already on record elsewhere here as being a fan of side mounts for certain applications, if they're well done. In this case, while the quality is good, the design definitely leaves much room for improvement. It's no surprise this rifle was relisted, and still went unsold. I presume the starting price prevented a more sympathetic individual from rescuing it and returning it to its' rightful form.

(As usual, I'm late to the thread, being a newbie with so much material to cover.)

Pierce Brosnan or Edward Fox in a bespoke suit, the Duke of Edinburgh in tweeds, practically anyone with a haircut wearing a dinner jacket - that's style. Purple polyester bib overalls with sausage-pockets - fads. Purple psychedelic Corvettes are just the result of chronic drug use.

A small world indeed! Years later, this same rifle, along with it's little green box of handloads, resides not far from where I sit this very moment. I've held it in my hands, and I can tell you it's much better in person than it looks in these dingy photos.

The description failed to mention that the rifle is a take down model, judging from the clearly visible take down pin in the forearm. I don't understand the part about "seitlich angeschlagene Riemenbügel", since they are clearly mounted on the bottom, unless there are more on the far side, out of sight.

The Biathlon is an event combining skiing and shooting and the shooter has to sling the rifle over his back to transport it from site to site. I would be interested in seeing a closeup of the safety modification, since it appears to be one which would be applicable to a low scoped rifle as well.

I thought so at first but then looked closer.
If so, it is not quite like the type produced at Steyr before WW2.

Here is the Biathlon.
If that's a takedown forend pin it's through left - to - right, opposite of the MS TD.
Would that dingus near the trigger be a release lever for the takedown?:

Note the forend pin on this M1903 Take Down Model:

It would be nice to have more info on the biathlon rifle.

I don't think that is a take down pin. I've seen photos from an older auction, which showed a sideways sling swivel mounted there on the other side. So it makes sense that it might be a nut that the swivel screws into from the other side.

No idea on the dingle under the trigger. A zoom in on that trigger seems to show it as coming out from the top, bending down, then re-joining at the bottom of the trigger guard. Perhaps the sling is meant to join there? Every biathlon rifle I've seen has almost a "backpack" sling, where there are two straps. So sling one from the front underneath mount to there, another from the side mount to the rear mount, and you have two straps. Maybe?

To me, that Haenel / Peterlongo rifle looks like it has been rebarreled to .30-06. At least, the front sight with base and hood don't look "pre-WW1 period". Also, the description sais "no valid proof". This speaks for a rebarrel job done outside Europe post-WW2.

I like that Haenel/Peterlongo stutzen but, looking at the floorplate release I think it may be a 1900 instead of 1909. Am I wrong?

It's a mixup, a 1909 receiver and bolt combined with a 1900 magazine and a nonstandard shotgun type triggerguard. Not the first such mixup of Haenel 1900 and 1909 features I have seen. The Suhl gunmakers never threw away any useable part .

Do you suppose that is a military barrel? It looks like it has a step at the front swivel and a military front sight base. Probably not uncommon.

The stepped round barrel with the military looking front sight base was a standard feature of the Haenel M1909 grade ST.P.Nr.6, the second lowest of the six quality grades offered.

International boxing champion, elite paratrooper, successful businessman and hunter; what a life!
I will mention Ripp, who quotes in his posts' signature "All men die but few men live" (or the like); Max Schmeling enjoyed a real man's life and, in addition, died at 99!
Thank you for sharing this post, Lancaster.

Lancaster
would the unit marking mean this rifle was potentially used in WW1 as a sniper rifle, or was the scope used in WW1 & put on this rifle at a later date?
Unusual safety but it would certainly be effective.
Marvellous piece of kit here mate, in a cracking calibre too!
I'm not normally a MS man, but ones like this certainly would convert me

we know that beside of military rifles also privat owned rifles were used for sniping in WW 1

Mannlicher M 95

and a Mannlicher Schönauer Stutzen

but I don't believe that such a privat gun would get a unit marking so thinking it was a scope used in the war but later sold as surplus(or someone take it home when the war ends) and came to this rifle with the mark

My grandfather used an issue Ross for sniping in WW1. His was a battle-field "promotion" to sniper(I was told).
He enlisted as a New Canadian.

Not on a Haenel, but on Mannlichers, Mannlicher – Schoenauers, all sorts of break-open guns and even some early pistols. From 1900 to 1910 Joseph Tambour patented countless such safety contraptions for all sorts of firearms. Until 1905 his address was given as Vienna, Austria, later as Nanterre, France. Often he patented his grip safeties together with Franz Neuber, a gunmaker from Wiener Neustadt, Austria. Neuber built many custom rifles on altered Mannlicher actions, often styled like earlier alpine Ischler Stutzen. Most likely all such Tambour safeties were installed by Neuber as he held the patents.

She's quite lovely and seems nearly pristine, but for damage to grip cap and grip.

I noticed the unusual proportions and found, as suspected, by reading the listing that barrel length is 50cm rather than the usual 60 for a TD.

Looks to have been made 1924 - 26 by 'OWGS' along with 'Made in Austria'.

In 9.5x57 & with a short barrel, would this be used for hunting those large pigs or wounded game in thick forest over in Europe?

Oh yeah - it would be great, in the bush or anywhere else - for me.
9.5x57 would not suffer at all with the shorter bl. Certainly nothing visible.

what you find when looking for schönauer can be sometimes hilarious like this one here https://www.egun.de/market/item.php?id=14729659

Steyr 1898 Orion in 6,5x54R Mannlicher-Schönauer

I think its the carbine version of the romaninia model make for the protuguese navy. it comes now from an estate where someone start to build a hunting rifle. little work now to made it ready, I think about it because it will probably selling very cheap.

The only military rifle I still own:
A Portuguese Carabina Mo.1896 in 6.5x53R aka .256 Mannlicher. Dated on the left receiver wall “Steyr 1898”. Except for the royal cypher of king Carlos I on the receiver ring it is identical to the Romanian M93 carbine, but apparently much rarer.

No, I don’t intend to sporterise it. When Portugal dumped their military surplus on the German market 30 years ago, I bought it for DMark 150.-, about $ 100.- then. But I bought and kept it for sentimental reasons. When I was a boy of 12 years (that’s 60 years ago right now!), already interested in guns and hunting, I listened to a discussion of my gransfather’s hunting pals at an after-shoot party. All those old men were WW1 veterans of course. Their discussion turned to the suitability of 6.5 mm cartridges for German “big game”, that is red deer stags and boars. One of the old hunters laughed and told: “ Whe head liberated some small 6.5mm Mannlicher carbines and a supply of their special ammo from the Por tuguese. As those short carbines did not take a bayonet they were unsuitable for our fighting. But we used them for foraging until the ammo was used up. I shot a lot of really big game with such a little carbine.” Hauptmann = captain Müller hat fought all the Great War with v.Lettow-Vorbeck in East Africa. “Foraging” to him was shooting African game to feed the troops, Germans, askaris and porters. The more meat to the shot, the better. Preferred prey were hippos for their fat, buffalos and giraffes, but zebras and larger antelopes were not scorned.
So these small, 45 cm = 17.7” carbines with their 10 g = 156 gr round nose bullets certainly had their place in the history of African hunting.

Here is an interesting variant found on the 'net: Steyr 1898 Trainer

Photos and text:

Portuguese Steyr
M1898 Mannlicher
Serial No: H94
Training Rifle
Calibre:.22
Price: £575
The Kingdom of Portugal bought about 12,500 6.5mm Mannlicher rifles and carbines from Steyr, the first batch was in 1896, for the Navy and Cavalry, and the remainder in 1898 for the Artillery.

These rifles carry “CI” crests for Carlos I of Portugal with all matching serial numbers.

In 1946 a few hundred of the Portuguese Mannlichers were adapted to fire the 5.6mm calibre (.22 Rimfire), for training purposes

This is a rare military training rifle not very often seen in the UK. It is one that is a must for collectors of military trainers.

The bore is in very good condition.

I corrected the year of the post from 2000 to 2020. I don't think Kuduae is 94!

But what an interesting story. Growing up as a young lad and hearing stories from the veterans of the von Lettow-Vorbeck campaign in Eastern Africa, German East Africa/Tanganyika, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique and Zambia/Rhodesia. The German and African troops of that campaign were legendary in their improvisation. Unsupported for much of the war.

I have von Lettow-Vorbeck's book but only started reading it. Did not finish it.

That is one FUGLY stock!
You might be able to trim it down & reshape it - I most certainly would!

Do you think that the barrel was cut down on that rifle? The proportions just don't look right to me.

That makes sense to me Dorleac. The forearm looks to long for that short barrel

Unusual but not ugly. A modern carbine look. Good for brush hunting. Of course bo different to the full sturgeon stocked quiescent. 18" barrel. My stutzens are 21 to 23 inches. The Greek M-S is 18". Handy.

'An interesting combination of styles / aesthetics'......
I've never heard of firewood described quite like that! No malice meant to the seller.
