Lee Speed "Type" build completed.

A while back I posted seeking info on a Lee Speed "Type" build.

Anyway, I have finally received my rifle and thought I would post a few photos. I am very happy with the build. I had a tang safety fitted, quarter rib with express sights. 5 shot magazine built and a nice piece of wood. Silvers pad and all rust blued. I will work up a load over the weekend and see how it shoots.

Really fine rifle!

Do you have a pic of the original safety area of the action? What did the g-smith do there? Wow that is really a fine gun.

We need more details!

Here is a photo of the action pre build. The gunsmith built the entire safety (internal workings etc). There was no safety on the action. I do have another bolt which has a safety incorporated but went with the tang safety. I think I have a photo of the internals of the safety which was taken during the build. I will see if I can find it and post.

After doing some load development I thought I would post an update.

I am using 215 gn Woodleigh RNSN projectiles which have an recommended impact velocity of between 1800 and 2200 fps.
After a bit of testing I settled for a load of RL 15 which gave a velocity over the chronograph of just over 2200 fps with mild pressure.

Then it was out for a few shots and here is the results. Target at 50 metres. The rifle is a delight to shoot and I am happy with the results.

I have one planed for the future that will be nearly identical to yours, but I have not been able to find a 5 shot mag. "Speeds" just don't look right to me with full 10 round mags.

Szihn, My gunsmith made the magazine for this rifle. He modified/cut down a 10 shot. Great job.

The tang safety adds a really nice touch although I find the bolt safety an attractive part of the Lee Speeds.
You have a real prize on you hands with this build.

Nice looking rifle!
RL15 works great in my .303 British Ruger #1 with both the Woodleigh 215 grain RNSN and the Hornady 174 grain RNSP.
Its hard not to like a classy rifle in an easy to shot caliber that can be used to cleanly take 95% of the game we hunt all over the earth.

Sorry Iowa 303, I missed this.

Yes RL15 works great. I tried a couple of other powders but RL15 gave the best results. I will only be using 215 gn Woodleigh RNSN in the rifle and yes I am sure it will take most game I come up against.

How is the new bottom plate attached to the magazine box? Is it braised from inside or possibly welded?
In the pictures the seam is not visible.

Welded, ground and polished is my guess. Nicely done. I have a couple look like I might have altered them, but no - not my work. They are not pretty.
VERY nice work on that rifle, all the way around- splendid.

I have seen and handled Robs Lee Speed and the sight, the whole rifle could of been cutom made for. The fit is perfect and the work is first class.

Jeff Lee Speed was built by Tony Small. From what I can see from the photos I'd hate to be the one to judge which is the better.
