The hunting camp I was in, in the early 2000's which did the heads in camp, used peroxide for bleaching the moose heads, after boiling and removal of the meat.
Much of that was done with long needle nosed pliers, especially in the nostrils.

I use the same type of pliers removing my nasal hair..

Daryl and Ripp, thank you for your input.

Nitrox, it is easy for foreigners to hunt in France; the requirements are:
- To present a valid hunting license from one's country in order to be issued a temporary hunting license in France.
- To have a personal liability insurance covering potential hunting related damage to third parties; this PLI can either be purchased in a foreign country to the condition that it also covers France (a certified translation in French of the insurance policy might be required) or be purchased in France. I am sure that Ripp, a specialised international insurance broker, would be happy to sell you such an insurance policy!
It is also easy to obtain a temporary import licence for bringing in one's rifle(s). With regards to hunting areas there are two options, either hunting with the person that has invited you, or hunting in an area managed by the French Forestry Commission (https://www.chasse.onf.fr/domaines/), which will provide you a guide.
The main difficulty should be to find points of contact that would be fluent English speakers in the French administration for preparing that trip from remote, unless of course you decide to take on seriously on French (more fluency than for ordering a beer at a bar would be required )!
For people residing in EU countries it is even easier as we can request International Weapons Passports from our national administrations, that allow to travel to different EU countries without having to apply for temporary import licenses.

Louis that sounds a lot easier than I would have guessed.

What caliber and ammunition restrictions are there for hunting?

Tinker, the main restrictions that apply to hunting in France are:
- No night hunting; hunting permitted from one hour before sunrise until one hour after sunset only.
- Telemeters mounted on rifle scopes not permitted; but handheld telemeters or telemeters coupled with binos allowed.
- 22 rimfire allowed for small game (vermin, fox, birds, rabbits, etc.) but not allowed for bigger mammals (roe deer and above).
- Maximum magazine capacity for semi-automatic rifles / shotguns: 3 rounds.
- Calibers below 5,6 mm not allowed for large mammals hunting (roe deer and above).
- Calibers with residual power at 100 metres lesser than 1000 Joules not allowed for large mammals hunting (roe deer and above); in practice the .222 is therefore the entry calibre for larger mammals.

There are in addition a lot of other 'lesser' rules regulating different types of hunting/shooting/bow hunting or applying only to specific areas/syndicates, but the major ones are listed above.

Thanks for the details.

You mentioned hunting on forestry land - a guide is supplied?
Is that expensive?

Tinker

It is compulsory to take a guide from the organisation when hunting in France with the 'Office National des Forêts' (ONF - French Forestry Commission); prices change slightly per region but for the Central Pyrénées region where I usually hunt, ONF guides are usually charged €350 per day (c. USD 390).

Tag fees for game are usually based on the CIC value of the harvested trophy; fees change also slightly per region but remain however within the same ball park figure. For the ONF in the Central Pyrénées this year, fees are:
- Roe buck: €200 (c.$225); this is the only game charged for a flat fee, whatever the size of the trophy is.
- Red deer, stag: from €600 ($675) for a young one to €3,500 ($3,900) for a CIC gold medal in the lower end.
- Mouflon, ram: from €630 ($700) for a young ram to $2,670 ($3,000) for a CIC gold medal in the lower end.
- Isard, buck or goat: from €950 ($1,050) to $2,700 ($3,000) for a CIC gold medal in the lower end.
I assume such fees are in line with prices charged for similar game by commercial organisations in Western Europe.

This game is wild game, not park game, so one cannot really plan to harvest any specific trophy level when getting out to the field; of course guides know their territories, but in France as anywhere else in the world the chance to be at the right place at the right time is always the key factor when big game hunting!

In most cases with the ONF, the hunter can keep the venison for roe deer, mouflon, isard/chamois and wild boar, but the ONF usually keeps red deer venison as they tend to sell if to local butchers.

I hope that this will give you a clearer picture of this situation.

Also note that you can get a tag in a private hunting association.
Generally these associations are awarded auction lots by the National Forestry Office (ONF) which manages the state territory.
I have been hunting this way since the seventies and I'm lucky to get myself a beautiful and difficult hunting lot in our beloved mountains since 1993.
Our association is limited to ten members and we take guests according to the hunting plan (number, sex and ages of the animals to be taken).
I have the great pleasure to welcome passionate isard hunters, the isard being the chamois (rupicapra pyrenaica) that can only be found on a portion of the Pyrenean mountain range.
Alas this mythical game excites the "collector hunters" who are ready to overpay tags to add this trophy to their collection….but territory and hunting are still difficult enough to calm some would be hunters!

Thank you Joël; your post will give me the occasion to add some information for the attention of the Forum members about the hunting territory you have been managing successfully for decades, in order to make their mouths watering!

All, as Joël Dorléac mentioned it above, he has been managing for many years a beautiful hunting territory in the Mount Canigou area of the Eastern Pyrénées. This territory is not for the faint-hearted but those that would manage to book a hunt there would be rewarded by beautiful mountain area teaming with isards and may in addition have the chance to be guided by Joël Dorléac himself!

Below are some photos of this exceptional hunting territory:

Let's render to Caesar what is Caesar's; camera work isn't from me but from Mr D, who had kindly shared these photos with me some time ago.
