Isard Mountain Hunting

I'm lucky to live in one of the most beautiful regions of France, at the extreme south of our country, near the Spanish border, where Pyrenean Mountains meet Mediterranean Sea.
For a passionate mountain hunter, here, lives a legendary species, the "isard".
Know as the Pyrenean chamois (Rupicapra Pyreneica), and contrary to his Alp cousin, the isard is not easily approachable which makes its hunt so popular amongst hunters who enjoy stalk hunting in mountain.
Hunting here can be painstaking and very challenging, but finally gratifying.
I hunt with my dog Elvis (a Jack Russell) who is of great help to find the game after shooting, and indeed, I use a DORLEAC rifle.

Sounds like a very nice hunting. Nice wiews and some good chamois also. Ok rifle is not bad either

Beautiful, all of it. The rifle, the Chamois, the mountains, and even your Jack Russell! I always enjoy seeing others take their fine rifles and enjoy them being used in the field for what they were intended.

We live part of the year in the Ariege, and often visit the Val d'Eyne in June to find alpine flowers. We have often seen the isard, and that country is hard walking! What calibre is your rifle? and how close can you get??

I use a .270 Winchester or a 6,5x57 of my own.
Depending of the territory I have also a 6,5-284 (very good mountain cartridge) and a 6XC on a light stainless and Kevlar technical rifle.
I'm not too sensitive to the caliber choice and I have always preferred a light medium cartridge in a very accurate and well-balanced rifle than any magnum.
Usually shots are taken between 200 and 400 meters.

Are there any hunting guides for foreigners in that region?
Can you provide an estimated price to build a rifle in 7x57 similar to the above with owner supplied Steyr M98 military barrelled action and a 404 (like this http://finegunmaking.com/page48/page50/page50.html ) with owner supplied old Magnum Mauser 98 barrelled action?

Dorleac thank you for posting. The rifles look great. The chamois is a worthy trophy and you have some very fine ones there. Being coy they would certainly be harder to hunt then the Alpine Chamois.

Is the characteristic of Isard / Rupicapra pyrenaica that they have more spots in winter coat than Rupicapra rupicapra. ?

I will be very pleased to guide you in our beloved mountains.
Past Friday I was with a good friend and customer, an avid hunter who come from a distance and, under heaven weather, at 2100m height, he has shot a superb isard, despite the wind, the angle and the distance.
Hard…but fantastic hunting!

Except for the size, the main differences between the isard –who is an older specie- and the chamois, are the fur color and the horns shape.
On isard, the coat is darker on young than on the old ones who sport a mellowed fur of yellow beige to darker chocolate, with always a kind of light colored scarf that cover the neck and go down the chest.
The horns of the chamois have a parabolic curve that start straight while on the isard they have a double curvature, the same difference than between a longbow and a recurve.
